Concert Review: Coldplay and Fiona Apple, Orlando, 3-4-06

Post by patsy stone »

Awesome? Nope.

Amazing? Nope.

PHENOMENAL? YES!

This is now my #1 favorite concert of all time. I'm not sure if it was because the band sounded awesome, the lighting effects were outrageous, or because the sold-out audience was so fun to sing along and dance with. Maybe it was the arena setting of the TD Waterhouse center or the fact that we stayed in the Marriott right next door so we could drink and just walk on over. Maybe it was the way that cell phones now replace lighters during slow songs, or the way we had fun doing the wave around the entire place waiting for Coldplay to come on.

I think it was a combination of all those things. Plus the animated Chris Martin running around the stage — and at one point, around the entire arena — and getting the audience involved in all the songs. Maybe it was the cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" that the audience sang along to. Or the way the cameras showed live shots of the audience on the special-effects wall behind the band as they played. Or the giant yellow balls (no jokes about giant balls, please) filled with gold confetti that fell from the ceiling during "Yellow" which made it all too surreal. Or the overall warmth felt during the entire show and a feeling that the band actually appreciated the fact that they were there because of the fans.

Overall, I was sad the show ended. Best show I've ever been to, seriously.

I was expecting to be disappointed. I know they can be overrated and are labelled as "wussy girlie music" where all the songs sound the same (as this article declares). But last night they proved to be a talented band that puts on a great show for their fans.

Hope you all get to check them out one day because they truly were a pleasure to watch.

And yes, they were even better than Radiohead. *gasp!*

Fiona Apple wasn't as dramatic and outstanding, but her voice filled the arena nicely and it was good to hear some of her old stuff. She's so small and thin and I felt like she was swallowed by this massive arena, but I thought she sounded good. I think she'd sound better in a smaller venue, though.

My friend ran into her neighbor after the show and he took pics with his digital camera. He's supposed to email them to me. If he does, I'll post 'em. It was really an awesome evening!

Ok gotta work another 12+ hour day tomorrow so I'm oot!

Nice review.

I had a fucking great time at their show last weekend. They do put on one tremendous live show and they keep the audience on their feet like no other show I've attended in quite a while.

I'm the most HUGEST Fion fan ever, but I was not happy with her set list or the way she changed up the songs. PrimeX was :x !

I took a shitload of pics, but these two from my pic phone have already been propertied and whatsuch.

I find that very hard to believe (even operating under the theory of: to each his/her own). They may have more lights and crowd energy, but the very nature of their music in comparison to Radiohead's can't possibly warrant a better show.

Coldplay = music to slash your wrists by

nice try. coldplay will never reach the stature of radiohead, i don't care how many "epic" light shows that band puts on.

only a woman would say coldplay > radiohead.

I didn't say that. I said they were better live, IMO. Maybe the circumstances made it better... I wasn't far away in the back and it wasn't outdoors in the heat and the audience was more energetic... and it was definitely more entertaining and fun.

Radiohead = my #1 favorite band and Coldplay is DEFINITELY not better than them overall, but I had more fun at their show.

The RH show I saw in West Palm Beach is definitely still #2. Even #1 1/2!

Chill oot people! I ain't stupid. :?
