A couple pretty big deals right at 3:00...

Sergei Samsonov to Edmonton
Tyler Arnason to Ottawa for Brandon Bochenski

Also, Atlanta picks up Steve McCarthy from Vancouver.

Seriously, Cory Cross?

The fax machine must be slow at the NHL office...

Jim Dowd to Colorado for a 4th round pick
Willie Mitchell and a pick to Dallas for Martin Skoula and Shawn Belle

This turned out to be a very active deadline day. I'm curious to find out who Boston got in return for Samsonov.

They keep rolling in...

Oleg Kvasha to Phoenix
Jamie Lundmark to Calgary
Eric Weinrich to Vancouver...it wouldn't be a trade deadline without a Weinrich trade

I thin the Kings did very well with their one deal. It would have been nioce to get some goaltending, I am not sold on Garon. But outside of Theodore I don't know who you would try to get as an upgrade. Luongo would have been nice, but I have the feeling that Florida would have been asking a lot for him. Basically it looks like Florida is picking Luongo and Jokinene to build around.

Samsonov is a UFA after the season...you got quite a bit back for a guy that you probably will lose in the summer.

Well we were still holding out hope for that 8th spot up here in Bruin land. I guess we gave up on that today. SO glad we held onto Raycroft though...... :meds:

The minor leaguer is Yan Stastny, whom the Bruins drafted in 2002. They traded him to Edmonton last summer for a 4th round pick they had originally sent to Edmonton for Brad Isbister. I'm scratching my head over this one. I was hoping they'd get rid of Murray to free up more cap space but not even San Jose was stupid enough to take him. The Bruins are done for this season, 7 points out of the playoffs right now...a Montreal win in Beantown tonight will be the final nail in the coffin. Mike O'Connell has got to go.

Sucks for the Avs...Svatos done for the year. Bad enough they downgraded their starting goaltending and didn't improve their blueline. These guys are primed for a one-and-done playoff year.

Yeah, I agree with you. But at least they didn't swap Jamie Rivers for Cory Cross.

I don't even know why they made they move. Rivers was the 8th defenseman on the roster behind Woolley and Lebda. I can't imagine that Cross is going to be anything more than a 6th defenseman. He's got size but he's bad defensively. I'd imagine he'd be matched with Chelios and so he can cover for any of his defensive lapses. Looking at the Pens roster and their payroll...Richard Jackman made less than Cross. I would've much rather picked him up if he was available. That's the thing with the cap...it lessens your options. Frankly, the Wings are in good shape even if they weren't going to make a trade. Cross might play a dozen minutes at most a night. If he limits the mistakes and plays physically, it's an okay pick-up.

I'll be damned...the Pens actually traded Jackman today to Florida. He was available.

Also Jason Wiemer was dealt to New Jersey.

Can't wait to see Parrish and Sopel in the lineup tonight.

With JR off the payroll next year, the Kings have some major $$$ to spend.

The Wings are going to be an angry team tonight. Phoenix kicked their asses on Tuesday. 9 of their last 21 games are against the three doormats of the division and they've still got 3 head-to-head games with the Predators. There's plenty of opportunity for them to run away and hide in the division and hopefully lock up home ice in the Western playoffs without any problem. You have to like this new schedule format in the NHL...all of these games down the stretch are within the conference. All these games are important to the playoff standings.

Unlike other years where we have to clear out player before they become UFA's and resign somewhere else, this year we kept all of our key ingredents and added:

Pronger
Peca
Spacek
Tarnstrom
Samsonov
Roloston

I LOVE THE NEW CBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lilja was pretty much the type of player until this year. He's become a serviceable defenseman in Detroit. Considering the lightning in a bottle they've gotten with the signing of Samuelsson and Cleary...the Wings haven't done too much wrong this year and have done well with the cap. I'm not saying Cross will become a shutdown guy all of a sudden but I think anyone playing with the likes of Lidstrom and Chelios are bound to get a little better. He has to know he's coming into a very successful team who wasn't trading for need...more for depth. If he wants to play regular minutes, he's got to outplay the other guys battling for his spot. Babcock won't play a guy who is an obvious liability. I'm sure he'll get some games right away to compete for the 6th spot on defense but he's going to have to compete with Woolley and Lebda. His ice time will only depend on how he plays. No one really comes onto this team and is entitled to anything unless they've earned it.

Parrish is a FA at the end of the season.

I'm sure AQ and CaneFan feel the same way. Do you think we'd see two guys like Weight and Recchi get traded to Carolina under the old system? Plus they added Whitney and Stillman in the offseason...both guys having resurgent season. I'm definitely a fan of the cap...my guys are still able to put out a winning team after all of the moves they had to make to get under the cap. It's ironic to see the Rangers thriving again when they aren't allowed to spend like mad. To see the overall balance in the league...this new CBA can be labeled a success so far.
