Chaney retiring

i heard someone on TV say he was "the best coach to never make a final four". i think that's what they said. i would have guessed one of the Mark Macon teams had made it, if you asked me straight up. but, apparently, that's not the case.

regardless, Chaney....i'm thinking of some other coaches who never made the FF of repute. Mean Gene Keady, Norm Stewart.....others?

is Chaney better than those guys? opinions....i obviously am not taking the time to put together the numbers.....i'd be interested how it plays out.

I havent been around long enough to say Cheney is the best coach to never make a Final Four. I never saw any basketball in the 60s, 70s and most of the 80s.

I think he was a good coach and a good leader of men, but I never remember him having many dominant teams. I think he did damn well for what he had on his team.

I would say Gene Keady is ahead of him on the list of coaches since 1975 or so.

I'd take Chaney over Keady. He took what was basically a small regional school and turned it into a national contender with name recognition. Purdue has always been in one of the best, most recognizable conferences in all of d1 sports, so Keady had better opportunities to get to the Final 4, seeing as recruiting wasn't as much of a challenge for him.

That being said, fuck John Chaney. Having more points at the end of the game was more important to him than winning with dignity.

Coach K wrote the intro to John Feinstein's latest book on the Final Four, and he mentions Keady, Stewart, Chaney, and Lefty Driesell as four great coaches who never made it to the Final Four.

Here in Philly, Chaney is a minor deity. Fran Dunphy, the current Penn coach is apparently at the top of the short list. Fran deserves a chance at a bigger job, but I would hate to see him leave Penn.
