I'm a College Hoops addict, I scour stats, watch games from many different conferences including small ones and try to make honest evaluations on what I see. I couldn't see the Big 10 dominance and when they placed so many teams in the tournament I was sickened. MSU, Illinois and Indiana were NIT teams at best but obvious asskissing guarantees them a spot over better squads. Quite obviously these retards setting RPI standards need to look around and realize that College Hoops is gaining strength of competition in even the smallest of Conferences and even the usual doormats in the ACC like Florida State are becoming a force.
Rack the Big 10 and the early exit as actual contenders for the Title step up.

If you had a shred of credibility, it was lost when you said that Illinois was an NIT team at best.

How exactly is the ACC showing anything thus far???88 wrote: It looks to me like the ACC, the Big East and the Pac10 are the best conferences this year
UNC escapes a 14 seed then loses to an 11. Not exactly dominating.
BC needs double OT to beat a 13 seed then drops a 12 seed. Unimpressive.
Certainly Dook is Dook.
NC State went 1-1 and got drubbed in their loss.
Not to mention Maryland losing a home game in the NIT to Manhattan.
SEC has impressed me more than the ACC in the tourney so far.

The ACC is what it is. every year they will have one or two teams with a legitimate championship shot, and one or two you don't want as underdogs in you bracket. The Big East is about the same. The Pac 10 is on a par with the MVC, only with higher seeds. Nobody in either league you could realisticly call a contender.

Big 10 getting no one in the Sweet 16? Damn. Honestly, none of the conferences have shown me anything besides the mid-majors. I usually give the benefit of the doubt to the big schools b/c I think they play tougher schedules, but the mid majors have performed very well. Not one team from any of the big conferences have played great in both games. One game has at least been a struggle. Actually, UF has played the best ball of the Tourney so far. This is the craziest tournament I have seen.
Shine.... I had no idea being a NCAA Basketball junkie had requirements like posting in this Forum, I would figure that you would take into account the asskicking I gave you in the ole Yahoo Leagues as someone who watches the game closely.....Shine wrote:Yeah, you're such an addict that despite have nearly 1300 posts on this message board you can't seem to ever make your way into THIS particular forum, the one devoted to the sport you allege yourself to be an addict of.Y2K wrote:Rack 88!

As for Illinois....
They scheduled a total of 3 actual contenders in the non-conference season BETWEEN such powerhouses as South Dakota State, Texas Southern, Arkansas LR, Coppin St, ect. Of all the Div 1 teams they had the biggest schedule of "pad the win total" opponents available. I'm surprised they didn't add Northridge State to this brutal group..
So after a conference schedule playing overrated Big 10 teams they play a gimme game in Air Force then get sent home when they meet solid Pac 10 team.
Save it......

Since this thread is ostensibly about the Big 10, here's a thought that popped into my mind as a result of the weekend games . . .
Has there ever been another conference before the Big 10 this year to place as many as 6 teams in the field and get completely shut out of the Sweet 16? I can't recall one, but it's possible that I'm forgetting something.

Ohio State overachieved quite a bit but they'll be great next year...top 5 or 10 for sure.
Michigan State had probably the best returning team from last year but underachieved.
Illinois lost three key members of that runner-up team last year and did a heckuva with what they had left.
Iowa looked like a Sweet 16 most of the year...they flat out choked away their first round game.
Indiana could've been a whole lot better if they didn't have that distraction of Mike Davis all season.
Wisconsin is always well coached and had another strong team...got hammered by a more athletic team.
They had some really solid teams but all of them had some sort of a flaw. Considering how balanced the landscape of the college game is...your one weakness can be exploited on any given night by any team. We've definitely seen that in this tournament for sure.

^^^^ Gets it...
tOSU did not have the size to compete with any team that had big front courts...lo and behold here come the Hoyas in the 2nd round...when you got 6'9", 7'2", and 6'9" and your tallest front court player is 6'9" (dials) and you are handicapped with Matt Slyvester well then that spells doom...
I definitely agree with Shoalize with regard to each of the teams did something great but had that one fatal flaw...again OSU's was front court depth...MSU's was probably mental, etc etc...To get shut out of the sweet 16 sucks but there is a lot of talent in the Big 10 and some great talent coming in...GREG ODEN come on down...Mike Conley come on down, DaQuean Cook come on down, etc, etc...I do think the Big 10 has to catch back up with some of the conferences in terms of overall athletism and what not...I am not saying Big 10 basketball does not have athletes or great players, but I firmly believe the ACC, Big East and SEC just flat out have done a better job of recruiting lately...IMHO...
Y2K Illinois a NIT team? Are you fucking kidding me?
TRIX...why is it so hard for you to believe that the Big 10 was the highest rated conference all year? OSU beat LSU, MSU played some great non-con games, etc, etc...let me guess you still have the SEC colored glasses on right?
I live in ACC country (Charlotte) and there will be a full on melt today with Carolina Nation...I can't wait to listen...

I guess take off your glasses and come correct and say your conference was WAY OVERRATED!!!!!!!!!!!! All of your teams were punked out in the first weekend. I was looking forward to playing OSU since I think that next year it will be between UF and OSU.
Sorry but March is where it matters.

Yes March is where it matters and the rest of the Field has BODE on the Big 10...but throughout the year the RPI, Sagarin take your pick had the Big 10 as the #1 or #2 conference...I am just citing facts along with the others who mentioned that...
yeah you got 2 in the sweet 16 and one of them needed a last second shot...congrats...but OSU has BODE on LSU head to head this year...
It's all good though as you pointed it could come to OSU and UF next year...but even with the talent Matta is brining in...I am not going to put lofty expectations in my mind for that class...could they? Sure. Could they not? Sure...Oden could be a huge bust for all we know...I hope they do come out and play well next year and move on...and perhaps make a deep run...in fact Matta has gotten some verbals from some other very talented kids for the next few years (I realize that could change) but hey it's nice to have some talent pipeline coming back to OSU ala the Jim Jackson type...
Good Luck against the Hoyas...

JSC...Perhaps in your feeble brain you can't comprehend things?
OSU beat LSU heads up...OSU won the Big 10 regular season conference championship...OSU played for the Big 10 Tournament Championship while LSU watched theirs...OSU got knocked out by a pretty good Hoya team, LSU got a last second shot to win against A&M...great don't hurt yourself patting yourself on the back...
if I remember correctly SCOREBOARD is the be all end all...
FACT - OSU beat LSU (regardless of score, venue)...so based on that OSU has BODE on LSU...if you can't handle that perhaps you should just not post...or are you going to try and spin the fact that because LSU is still alive in the tourney that they are somehow VASTLY superior to OSU even though OSU beat them? Keep trying Jr....
I already came out and propped the REST Of the FIELD for having BODE on the Big 10...but the fact that OSU was picked to finish middle of the road in the Big 10 and then went out and won it (regular season) then played for the Conference Tournament Championship and then got a #2 seed that is a huge achievement for them...excuse me for having a little pride in that body of work...

I call this one a draw as you have two different forms of bode in this situation. OSU fans have got the "we beat you head-to-head" bode and LSU has got the "we're still playing for a title" bode. Now the debate comes down to which form of bode is more significant? I'd say if LSU finds a way to reach the Final 4, that level of bode would go above and beyond some regular season out of conference win by Ohio St.

Oh look....the posse follows me every where. Funny. Fucking tards. This is so sad.
This is actually comical at this point.
AND........no big ten tard can come in here and say a word besides we were overrated and sucked in the tourney.
As a fan of a team that was ousted in the first round teh last three years I can easily say that UF's sweet 16 in a lot sweeter than a great regular season and an early trip home.
Funny how big 10 fan comes in here trying to sat that their regular season is what really means 'bode. Bull-fucking-shit. College Basketball is all about March Madness not December. Anyone trying to tell you otherwise probably just had their team get punked.
Too funny.

Trix...perhaps you should take some reading lessons...
All I stated was various sources had the Big 10 rated as one of the top two conferences all year...I then said for OSU to do what they did was extraordinary considering no one gave them a chance
This is what I said...so I propped everyone else for having BODE on the Big 10

my statement was that OSU beat LSU heads up...plain and simple no argument there...no matter the score, no matter when OSU beat LSU that is a fact...in no way did I diminish what LSU or UF has done...in fact I even agreed with you that it could come to OSU and FLA next year...
Good lord read first, comprehend, then post...you need some work on that...other than that...again I say Good Luck against the Hoyas (you apparently missed that piece of my post)...
and JSC or whatever the fuck...yeah you are right I would much rather watch OSU in the tourney now...but hey after all it is what it is...they played a shitty game and so be it they lost...all I can do is cheer for them and support them and they had a great season in my book...and anyone who argues that winning your conference, playing in the finals of your conference tournament, and getting a #2 seed is not a good season is a fucking idiot...

All right, two things:
First of all, TiC and Killian, go join the NIT conversation cause as I recall, your team didn't even make the NCAA tourney. Oh wait, you are out of the NIT after losing to a, uh, Big10 team, is that right? But this just might be another case of defining your season with a close loss (or losses).
Secondly, who gives a crap about the SEC or who's in the sweet 16. The only thing that matters is who cuts the nets down (and to a lesser degree, who made the final four). The fact that OSU or any other Big10 team didn't make the sweet 16 sucks but it wont matter past this weekend. And it doesn't matter that the SEC put two teams in the S16 or that LSU continues their season. Win the championship, then you can pull Bode. Until then, you haven't doen much.

Not I. As I've stated numerous times, I don't give a rats ass about ND's basketball program. I hope they do well, and if they do, great. And yes, I defined ND's season by a close loss.

Killian wrote:It's a tough call. Brey has done a good job dragging ND out of the shadow of the John McCloud era, and while he has his weaknesses, I think there have been a few things that have hurt him.
1.) Facilities. The JACC needs to be renovated in a big, big way. It's supposedly in the works, but those facilities do Brey no favors when it comes to recruiting.
2.) Injuries. Torin Francis has been wildly inconsistant during his 4 years at ND, but his lower back injury has really taken a toll on his game. Shots that he would throw down as a freshman have turned into lay-ups as a senior. Granted, he has missed many of those lay-ups, but his jumping ability is almost gone.
3.) Dennis Lattimore. One of Brey's worst mistakes was taking this kid from Arizona. He was a cancer during his redshirt year, and he was a cancer when he played. Chris Thomas fell into his crowd and that did nothing but bad things for the team last year.
Brey continues to recruit well, and I would really like to see him stay on at ND for a few more years. ND is competitive, getting good players, and seems on the cusp of taking the next step forward. Honestly, I don't think there is a better option than Brey at this point.
Oh, and the "D'oh" experiment was only one season.

So we are to forget the whole body or work for a season? So when Florida goes 10-1 or some shit like that in football and then gets beat in a bowl game don't come running back with we won the SEC bullshit...because then it won't matter since you wouldn't have won the crystal trophy...T REX wrote:

Wisconsin's demise could be seen from a mile away. Started the season 14-2 and limped in at 5-9, including losing their last three.

It also happened to the Big Ten in '95 or '96. IIRC, they placed six teams, and only Iowa got out of the first round, escaping George Washington at the buzzer. Then they got run in the second round by 15 or 20 pts.Terry in Crapchester wrote: Has there ever been another conference before the Big 10 this year to place as many as 6 teams in the field and get completely shut out of the Sweet 16? Mgo,
Of course I follow the basketball team. It's something to do to pass the time between now and spring football. I don't give a rat's ass as to the outcome of their games. Would I like to see them win? Sure. Does it bother me that they don't? Nope. I honestly forgot they were playing last night. In fact, I would trade every basketball win this year for one more point in the Fiesta Bowl, changing the outcome from a 14 point loss to a 13 point loss.
I have an opinion on their program and what can be done to fix it, but if ND wallowed in basketball mediocrity for the rest of eternity, it wouldn't bother me.

By that logic, you can't post anything more about the NCAA tournament, as your team is now out, having lost to, of all things, a Big East team.Sky wrote:First of all, TiC and Killian, go join the NIT conversation cause as I recall, your team didn't even make the NCAA tourney.
If you've followed ND basketball at all this season, you'd realize that statement borders on the Marcus Allen-esque.But this just might be another case of defining your season with a close loss (or losses).

Wow, fringing on intelligent there TiC.
So I can't post on the NCAA tourney because we are now out of the tourney? In case you didn't notice, I didn't say anything about the NIT. As far as I am concerned, you can post all you want about the NIT even though your team is now out, having lost to, of all things, a Big10 team. Course, when you like to jump in on the "Big10 sucks" thread, you might want to remember where you came from.
Secondly, I see no shame in losing to a BigE team (or at least one that made the tourney). I never once denied they were the best conference and we were flatly outmatched in that game.
And no shit fucko, I was trying to be Marcus Allen-esque with my comment. You all defined your football season with a close loss and your basketball team kept finding ways to lose game after game. So it is fitting to follow that trend, of course, I don't see Brey getting a 10-yr extension.

No, we all didn't define the season with a close loss, and Weis didn't get a 10 year extension, either.Sky wrote: You all defined your football season with a close loss and your basketball team kept finding ways to lose game after game. Of course you can. However, saying that I can't post about the NCAA tourney because my team isn't in, the natural logical extension is that now that your team is out, you can't post on it either.Sky wrote:Wow, fringing on intelligent there TiC.

Bullshit to both, in reality.
Point me to exactly where I said the Big Ten sucks. They had a bad tourney, no doubt. But the sum total of my contribution to this thread before you called me out was a question as to whether any conference, prior to this year, had ever put as many as 6 teams in the field only to be shut out of the Sweet 16.Course, when you like to jump in on the "Big10 sucks" thread, you might want to remember where you came from.
And btw, a bad tourney for a conference doesn't necessarily mean that said conference sucked. They just didn't get it done when it really counted. But there's a reason why it's called "March Madness" -- upsets happen.
In 2004, the Big East had a better tourney than the ACC, including, IIRC, a better overall winning percentage (although the ACC placed two teams in the Final Four), but most people thought the ACC had the better conference over the season.
