a dogme 95 style thing done by Figgis who did Time Code and lately Crash (which was decent enough--i thought) is almost unwatchable at times....but still compelling to me at least. this is a grade AAA "i walked out on this one early" for a lot of people type film. the first half hour is pretty rough. and some of it is pretty indulgent and excessive. but, then something interesting or funny will happen--or some nudity to keep you going.

i actually thought it was a *parody* of Dogme films....for about the first 40 minutes.....and maybe it still is. I don't know. the outtake things don't give one that impression. it does a sense of humor about itself.....i think.

I'm going to rent it again....but not for a couple weeks. the handheld camera outtakes with the actors themselves--a bizarre cast of Salma Hayek, a bunch of english babes, couple english guys, David Schwimmer, Burt Reynolds, a flamenco dancer, the guy who played Mossawi in Syriana, Julian Sands, John Malkovich---are actually really funny. the film itself has some funny bits....too.

they do a ficticious version of the John Webster play Duchess of Malfi story within a story thing....that's the unscripted/scripted "plot".

despite that it's a film many, many people will hate.......it's probably the only movie you'll see in which John Malkovich is presumedly made into prosciutto by a Venician hotel staff of cannibals.

maybe it's just truly awful.....i felt that way at times. i have no idea. it's possible it's just a big fuck-up.

i guess i just prefer a big fuckup to MI: III.

the other thing: i never realized that Salma Hayek was so short. she's like 5' 2", 5' 3" max--even with the hair.

Don't get me wrong. You can tell the filmmakers were at least trying. If the choice was between MI3 and watching this movie again, I'd watch this movie just to see if I missed something the first time around.

But after one viewing, I was mostly just confused and disappointed.
