(OT) I saw Korn Last Night (OT)
10 years and Mudvayne opened...
I must say very good show...Korn played a lot of material, some medley shit in the middle with snippets from a lot of old shit...BLIND brought the house down for the closer...
anyway I'll get piled on for my favorites bands of Rush, Korn, Pantera (Damageplan), and the like but since I am a drummer therefore I like guys like Vinnie Paul and Silvera and obviously Peart...
Silvera was fucking nails last night and seems to get better and more profiecient every time I hear an album or see them live...
Pile on if you must...
oh yeah Ohio State will kick michigans ass again!

That is why I posted here and not in the music forum...I know some of the guys here like some of the same shit I listen to...Pantera, etc...
just my thoughts...they were fucking awesome...people are entitled to have their opinions about music...but I feel as though in the music forum if you don't listen to all indie/college type music you are a tard...
i mean the rush fans (myself included) take so much shit...i mean Rush has arguably 3 of the most accomplished musicians alive and some of those in the music forum think they are dogshit...
anyway Korn rocked, Mudvayne was incredible, and 10 years was pretty good...I give it a 9 on a 10 scale...just my opinion...

Glad you had a good time and enjoyed yourself. I think I might have heard of Korn, do they have the K facing the wrong way? The other two I have never heard of. What is the genre?

Lefty...the R is facing backwards...
genres...hmmm I am not so good at calling out genres...someone else might be able to help classify them
Mudvayne though to me is a Korn/Pantera hybrid...loud, fast, hard hitting...they shredded for the full hour they were on stage...
all in all a good time...first time I have been to a concert since Rush in 2004 (R30)...

It's all PSU's fault anyways. He stole my old record player.
BTW- Not a fan of Korn or Mudvayne anymore, but I always carry the Pantera in the CD case. Their old shit still owns.
If it weren't for the chick lead singers awful voice I might be able to dive a little deeper into their catalog.i mean Rush has arguably 3 of the most accomplished musicians alive and some of those in the music forum think they are dogshit...

I think Primal Concrete Sledge is one of my all time faves from Pantera...
Vinnie Paul can absolutely demolish on the drum kit...he has some of the fastest feet outside of Charlie Benante from Anthrax...
Rack the chick lead singers voice though...I like Geddy but sometimes the screech does get to me...
But I will say Neil is a fucking GOD behind the kit...

Man, all these years I thought I was the only one. I'll even take it a step further and say that Trendkill was their best (and most complete) album.OUMO wrote:
I have always loved Floods.
The first 3 albums* seemed really "front-heavy" (if that's even a word). It's like they put all the good songs at the beginnings of those albums and lumped all the filler together at the ends.
Trendkill just sounds more cohesive. It sounds more like an album proper, as opposed to just a collection of songs. That 15-second-long dual scream by Phil and Seth Putnam at the beginning of the album is about as epic as Tom Araya's shriek at the beginning of "Angel Of Death." The contrast between "Suicide Note Part 1" & "Part 2" is awesome. But "Floods" is definitely the centerpiece of the album. It's heavy in a very different way than any of their other songs. It's definitely my favorite Pantera song.
* -- Save the emails, clones. Nobody counts those two glam albums as being "real" Pantera albums.

Mike...RACK that shit...
I definitely think Trendkill is one of their best if not the best...not that I don't like the earlier stuff, but you are right Trendkill is more complete...I also happen to think Far Beyond Driven is pretty solid as well...in fact the first 4 songs (i know the front heavy) are just amazing then you throw in shedding skin later on and holy fuck...
anyway great discussion...

Did I hear Pantera...?

Vinnie Paul IS the man... although, yes, Charlie Benante has much faster feet, Vinnie does more with them.

See, I disagree with this though... The songs that we heard the most were at the front, but, for example, Cowboys ends with Message in Blood, The Sleep, and The Art of Shredding. Not exactly "filler."MiketheangrydrunkenCUfan wrote:The first 3 albums* seemed really "front-heavy" (if that's even a word). Vulgar ends with Regular People (my old, "get pumped up to play basketball" song), By Demons... and Hollow. This one, moreso than Cowboys, ends kind of "soft," yeah, but Hollow is still nice. and By Demons... is a Pantera classic.

I can say I just don't "get" metal. Two problems:
1) What the fuck are they so angry about? They get paid to play music in front of crowds who want to hear their music...and lots of access to booze, drugs and women. Sounds like a good deal to me.
2) If their "I'm angry at the world" approach is just all an act, which is what I presume, then how can anyone take them seriously, considering....well, they're just faking it?

OU - yes Vinnie absolutely shreds...so does Charlie...I guess they both have played, thought of some awesome shit...
Screw - growing up a drummer Neil Peart is the be all end all in my book...which is why I am and always will be a huge RUSH fan...
I just love some of the new music and KORN was one of them...plus I think david silverra is very underrated as a drummer...
just my thoughts...
as far as Pantera goes...I have every album and love every one of them...i still maintain primal concrete sledge is one of my all time favorites

You could make this argument about any style of music, though. Why do Pink Floyd and Radiohead continue to "fake" being depressed when they have boatloads of cash? If everyone followed your line of reasoning, all music by popular artists would be about how great their lives are and how much pussy they get because they're rich. If that's what you're into, there are a bunch of shitty rappers you could check out that have that subject matter down pat.MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:I can say I just don't "get" metal. Two problems:

I'm sure being rich is really great and all, but I doubt it guarantees that you'll be happy every second of your life. I don't think writing angry songs automatically becomes insincere just because you can afford your mortgage payment every month.
If you don't like heavy metal because you think it's just loud and obnoxious, that's understandable. To each his own. But please don't imply that it's somehow less valid or sincere just because a lot of it is angry.

Through clever spinning tactics I could easily knock this pitch outta the park, but I'm gonna Tucker Carlson this one and say: that's a fair point.MiketheangrydrunkenCUfan wrote:You could make this argument about any style of music, though. I'm really not attempting to invalidate the music. I'm really the biggest supporter of the "to each his own" stance. It's just that since anger IS indeed the basis for which many of these bands express themselves, that makes it intrinsically difficult for me to indentify with them seeing as I do not have an angry outlook on life.

People have been writing angry music for years...I mean look at the whole grunge thing...even some hair metal...fossil rock you name it there is anger in that music...
I am not saying I "buy" all of the anger...take Korn for instance...Jonathan davis had some fucked up stuff happen to him as a child...he sang about it...ok...but I really do feel that after what 15 years he may have evolved as a song writer? Who knows...
I mean in a lot of instances since I played drums I just followed the music moreso than anything...I mean I love listening to these bands for the music and checking out new drummers, etc...I never really bought into the lyrics...some are funny, some are serious, some are whatever...

They have to continue to play to their crowd, if their crowd wants to hear pissed off angst, then they will deliver it. I have more of a problem with people who make music about problems they never had to suffer through, you think Lil Bow Wow has ever had to struggle for "props" or "respect"? he's about as authentic a rapper as Vanilla Ice was

And unfortunately, that's the other part of metal that I can't get into...
Concur with you on Rush though. Big fan.

Maybe their anger is a magnification of a greater social conscience? I mean, we live in a country where killers are allowed to walk free, innocent people are getting sued, cheaters are glorified, and people are scared to walk from their apartement to their car in the inner-city area of almost every major metropolitian city... Not to mention the fact that rappers are allowed to exist. :D
That's enough to make me angry, rich or otherwise...
Just because YOU wouldn't care about the rest of the world if you were rich doens't mean other people don't... especially people who haven't ALWAYS been rich.
