Everyone and their dog new that the Thorton trade would make or break him. The Bruins haven't been as horrible since the trade, but the fact that SJ has climbed 2 points out of a playoff spot with 2 games in hand makes teh trade look hugely lopsided.

Who would have guessed and the start at the year that the Bruins would be finishing the season with out Thorton and Samsonov.

It all depends on your point of view.

Since the trade.......

GP G A P PM
Joe Thornton
44 16 51 67 53

Marco Sturm
41 20 16 36 26
Brad Stuart
44 8 18 26 32
Wayne Primeau
45 6 8 14 38

Boston has (so far) gotten 96 man games, 18 more goals, and a million dollars out of the deal. Not to mention the future trade value. Boston would have missed the playoffs regardless.

IMO this trade was a tie, if not slightly in Boston's favor. Not quite the fleecing I alluded to at first, but you people thinking San Jose got over (which is the majority) I just don't understand.

O'Connell's biggest problem is not the Thornton trade, it's his inability to put together a good team. He had basically a clean slate before this season and put together a total abortion. He had his time to show what he can do, he sucked, he's gone. Good riddance.

It's amazing what that Thornton trade has done for San Jose. He's a Hart Trophy candidate for what he's done with Cheechoo.

You can't add up 3 player point totals and compare it to Thorton's totals. You have to look at Cheechoo's numbers after the trade, & look at Marleau's numbers now that he's on the second line and not facing the opposing teams checking line. Thorton made the enitire team better. His team will make the playoffs, Boston won't.

San Jose wins.

Too bad the B's can't fire their owner.

As for O'Connell, how freaking stupid do you have to be to trade your best player for Brad Stuart?

That's the worst trade I have ever seen.
Defense wins championships.
