I was a big fan of VY from local high school, so it didn't hurt as bad as you might think. Besides, USC was overrated and I am glad someone proved it.
What was the line, something like 7?
I won a bit of money on the horns.

Texas, a Pac 10 team, OSU have won resent titles while my Huskers suck.
And you wonder why I have found better things to do.

P.S. OK, the real reason why Tejas winning didn't bother me.....................I was still high from Neb kicking Michigan's ASSSSSSSSSSSSS. Sure it was the Alamo but any time Neb can put a whipping on the likes of Mich, FSU, Miami, Florida, OU or Texas, it is a good thing.

I remember that, too. I was okay with TU winning it all because I figured it would end all the ESPN circle-jerking to all things Carroll and USC. Plus you have to root for your conference.

All bitter rivalries eventually evolve to include mutual respect. Okay OU and Texas might be an exception, but I root for OU every game they play besides vs. Nebraska. I cheered like hell for Texas vs. Ohio State. I even root for (puke) Colorado when they plat OOC.

Believe it or not, I actually do it in basketball. And in part, that traces to my days at ND, believe it or not, even though ND was a basketball independent at the time.

So based on that, I became a sort of fan of the entire Big East, and of course, when ND later joined the Big East for basketball, that only solidified things.

I too hope ND never joins a football conference, but it's mainly due to the scheduling, moreso than anything else. If they ever do, I will probably get into the pulling for my conference mentality as well.

I think basketball is a completely different animal (as are most other college sports). There are teams that I've always half ass followed, with Syracuse being one of them. I loved their run in the '96 tourney, but rooted like hell against them when they play ND. And there will always be a team that I pick up in the tourney and root for. Last season it was WVU, even though I completely despise their football team and program.

I see what you're saying, and I agree. But in football, if ND were in the Big 10, I wouldn't root for UofM or OSU to win simply because they were in the same confrence. Now USC on the other hand, I would root for.

I hope ND never joins the Big Ten, and I might have trouble rooting for some of those teams if we ever do join. And I get your point about basketball being a different animal from football.

Believe it or not, though, I was rooting for West Virginia against Georgia. Part of it, I suppose, was pulling for the underdog. Also, I want to see the reconstituted Big East survive, for the long-term benefit of ND's basketball program. West Virginia's win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl went a long way toward solidifying the Big East.

Yeah, I think that OU/Nebraska is one of those rare instances where two of the greatest programs of all time decided, "yeah, we ARE better than everybody else, and we can be rivals and still be cool." And they were, and it was good.

West Virginia's win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl went a long way toward solidifying the Big East.

I was basically shocked while watching that game. WVU looked like the much faster, crisper team. In recent years, everyone has been dying to sharpie Georgia in as a BCS contender...but they have yet to really warrant it, IMO. Nonetheless I was surprised, having watched WVU look like ass against Maryland and VT earlier in the season.

Not for me. Back in 2001, even if CU had beaten Oregon in the Fiesta, I still would've pulled for Miami in the Rose. I'd have rather finished as the consensus #2 than shared a title with Nebraska.

I've cheered for Nebraska twice in my entire life and I still regret it. The first time was in the 93 MNC game when they got hosed against FSU. I don't know what came over me, but I guess I just felt kinda bad that, for as great as UNL had been for so many years, none of my Husker fan friends had ever experienced winning an MNC in their lifetime. I still felt the same way next year, so I cheered for them against Miami. Warren Sapp made it a little easier to justify. But after they won that game, I immediately realized how foolish I'd been. I'd just lost the one bragging right I had over Husker fans (actually seeing an MNC in my lifetime).

I'll also admit that it didn't break my heart to see them beat Michigan in the Alamo Bowl. I wasn't cheering for them by any means, and I would've loved to have seen Michigan pull off that final play, but I was kinda frustrated by how much shit the Big XII had been getting last year.

For the most part, I don't really buy into the conference loyalty thing either. I mean, if you're a Chiefs fan, are you going to pull for the Raiders or Broncos in the Super Bowl? Hell no. You want to see them get their hearts ripped out. This past bowl season was a little different, though, just because everyone was down on the Big XII. It just seemed a little hypocritical to me that, year in and year out, the Big 10 justifies having a bunch of 7-4 teams with "we're all so tough and we just beat up on each other." But the one year it happens in the Big XII, it's a "down year."
