Opening weekend schedule announced

Post by The Assassin »

'Manning Bowl', MNF twin bill highlight schedule peekESPN.com news services

ESPN will kick off the new era of Monday Night Football with a doubleheader, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced Monday.

Washington will host Minnesota in the opener (Sept. 11, 7 p.m. ET), followed by San Diego at Oakland (10:15 p.m. ET). The Vikings-Redskins game will features new Minnesota coach Brad Childress against a team which added a slew of free agents to an already talented 2005 playoff roster. The second game is highlighted by a pair of debuts -- Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and Raiders head coach Art Shell.

Also, the Manning brothers will play each other for the first time to open NBC's Sunday Night football schedule. That game is Sept. 10 (8:15 p.m. ET) at the Meadowlands. According to the NFL, it will be the first time in league history that brothers will start at quarterback against each other.

The season opener will be Sept. 7, with defending Super Bowl champ Pittsburgh hosting Miami. NBC will televise the game, which will be the Dolphins debut for quarterback Daunte Culpepper, if he's healthy enough to start the season. That game is set for 8:30 p.m. ET.

Other schedule highlights announced Monday:

• Terrell Owens will make his Dallas debut in the first late Sunday afternoon telecast of the year (FOX) when the Cowboys visit Jacksonville.

• The first-ever tripleheader on Thanksgiving. The Dolphins will visit the Lions in the early game (CBS), followed by the Buccaneers at the Cowboys (FOX) and capped off by the Broncos at the Chiefs (NFL Network).

The Chiefs used to host a Thanksgiving Day game in the AFL days and have long campaigned to host one in the NFL.

"I've thought all those games should be rotated," Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt said Monday. "But it's a plus for us to have the first one at night.

"We have a history in them. We always hosted them before the merger, and we've wanted to do it again."

The Broncos-Chiefs match will be the first live, in-season game on NFL Network, which will show eight prime-time games from Thanksgiving through the end of the season. Those games will be on either Thursday or Saturday nights.

"It ought to bring a great rating," Hunt said. "People will be worn out from all of their Thanksgiving Day activities, so they can sit down and enjoy the game."

The rest of the 2006 schedule will be announced in April when it is finalized.

Bout fukkin time they added a 3rd Thanksgiving game. I think with the 3rd game they outta rotate it yearly. Let the Lions and Cowpokes keep their tradition going but give the rest of the NFL a turn each year.

Chargers-Raiders monday night.

I am in favor of a third game on thanksgiving. I believe the Boys should always play on T-day, but feel free to rotate the other two games.

:D

This will now give me reason not to pass out after dinner. Drinkin continues as long as football is on the tube. Rack the schedule makers/commish on this idea.

They have the Dolphins as the Steelers Thursday night opponent?

WTF?

Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Kansas City, San Diego, Atlanta, Carolina and Jacksonville are all on the Steelers schedule and would have been better matchups than the Dolphins. Particularly Denver, San Diego and Cincinatti.

You're asking for a fight with LionFan, aren't you?

I'm really hoping with this new coaching staff and offensive philosophy will make the Lions more viewer-friendly for Thanksgiving. They've been an utter embarassment since Millen took over. I don't blame most NFL fans want someone else to be on Thanksgiving instead of the Lions but tell me you didn't feel the same way when Barry was wearing the Honolulu blue and silver. I'm fairly confident the Lions will be more competitive and entertaining team to watch this year. If they'll be successful is a whole other subject but I think they'll be fun to watch with their talent and Mike Martz's creativity. Bottom line is Thanksgiving is a tradition for LionFan as much as it is for any other fan. If I'm not mistaken, they were the ones to come up with the idea of playing on Thanksgiving back in the day...well before the Cowboys ever did it.

I agree

I'm sure we'll get a Monday night game at Denver at the end of November or December. Then we'll have to Arrowhead the week following.

and of course for both games the temperature will be about 2 degrees farenheit. Its Tagliabues parting gift for Al.

My campaign to get the NFL network included in my Time Warner cable package goes into high gear now. Rack a T-day night game. I'm usually bored out of my skull by then, and a Chiefs v. Mules tilt for dessert that evening is not gonna' suck one bit.

And just imagine Paul, that if Proposition 1 and 2 pass next week, in about 3 years you'll be able to go to a late season game like that and not have to freeze your fat fucking ass off!

The first game of the season is as good a time as any to annihilate Moss again.

Not even close. Chargers.

And just as good to see Phillip Leaf throw about 4 interceptions.

Would you really want a dome? When they built Gillette it wasn't even considered. Real football is played outdoors with the elements. Went to the RCA Dome once and really don't think I will ever go back........

This is the NFL's way of making sure that the NFL Network is a part of basic cable packages everywhere. By this fall look for your cable provider to have caved in.

Damn straight. I've been stewing over Time Warner not having it since day one, when every other fucking outlet in the area does.

If I still don't have the NFL Network come November, I'll be pulling the plug on cable and hooking up Dish Network or Direct TV or whatever.
