Roy Williams - COY

Post by Sky »

Roy Williams was selected COY by the AP. Like its hard to manage 5 blue chip prospects each year. He is the Phil Jackson of the NBA w/o all the titles.

I though Wright, Pearl or Matta were all more deserving. They certainly did more w/o the recruiting machine that is Dean Smith/MJ.

Or hell, how about Larranaga.

I think he deserved it. He lost his top 6 scorers and his whole starting 5. He won w/ freshman and role players.

I think it was well deserved. It was a lock after UNC kicked Duke's ass on Duke's home court to close out the regular season.

It's a regular season award so that second round exit definitely shouldn't taint what he accomplished. I think a lot of us thought they'd be lucky to go .500 after losing all of those great player. He did a great job and they'll only get better next year. They lose Noel to graduation but they'll be young and exciting. I expect them to win the ACC next year with Duke losing Redick and Williams and BC losing Smith.

Disagree completely. GM actually had a fairly unimpressive regular season, at least for an at large mid major. Usually when a mid major team gets an at large bid, it's due to an impeccable regular season, with only 2 or 3 losses, and a win or two over major conference foes. GM played Wake Forest and Mississippi St...bottom of the barrel major conference teams, and lost to both.

Exactly. And include the AP in "a lot of us." They set this up by assuming UNC would tank for no other reason than not knowing who was suiting up for them this year.

Any coach who bothered to pay attention to this will have a good laugh tonight for ol' Roy, giving the biggest f'ing  possible for his getting the cream of the crop coming out of high school to perform well. Every last one of them would take his freshman blue-chippers over upper-class nobodies.

You guys are full of crap. Doing what he did was good but not great and certainly not worthy of a COY award. If I had a roster like that, I could put together a similar year (given I had the last 20 yrs to tune my coaching skills). He lives in a recruiters wet dream and is capable only of losing 2 or 3 of the next 10 championships. That is, he should do nothing less than win 2/3 of the next 10 championsihps...anything less will be typical Roy Williams.
