WASHINGTON (AFP) - The famous Winchester rifle glorified in American Westerns may have fired its last shot as a plant where it had been manufactured since 1866 closed its doors last week.

THE WINCHESTER MYSTERY HOUSE

Story...

In 1884, a wealthy widow named Sarah L. Winchester began a construction project of such magnitude that it was to occupy the lives of carpenters and craftsmen until her death thirty-eight years later. The Victorian mansion, designed and built by the Winchester Rifle heiress, is filled with so many unexplained oddities, that it has come to be known as the Winchester Mystery House.

Sarah Winchester built a home that is an architectural marvel. Unlike most homes of its era, this 160-room Victorian mansion had modern heating and sewer systems, gas lights that operated by pressing a button, three working elevators, and 47 fireplaces. From rambling roofs and exquisite hand inlaid parquet floors to the gold and silver chandeliers and Tiffany art glass windows, you will be impressed by the staggering amount of creativity, energy, and expense poured into each and every detail.

She built the house for all of the ghosts of everyone killed by the Winchester Rifle!!

It's an awesome house and especially if you liked Scooby Doo growing up..

The Doors that open to brick walls, the chimneys that don't go all the way to the top (to trick the Evil ghosts.. because evil ghosts are dumb!).

The trap doors, the rooms that have no visible doors...

It's an awesome place and a must see while in San Jose, California!!

SMACK... she did all this because she was given $2 million and $10,000 / week for life in the 1880's.

She was visited by the SOULS of people killed by the Winchester rifle and told to build a house for all of the souls that were killed by her husband's invention..

She wasn't thinking of $$$ but as it turns out... She made a boatload and so does the Estate!!

Jack,

Go read Dins' diatribe about building w/o permits. Maybe you'll get it then.
