I went to Nick's Coney Island....

On saturday before the Blazer Game.

On my last trip to Portland, I made the mistake of falling into some new school, micro brew and gourmet dogs place on the other side of hawthorne. Had a decent coney, but when I told some portland posters about my experience upon my return I was met with the pm equivalent of about 4 shaking heads.

"you didn't go to nick's?"





So this trip , I was determined to make it right, and scarf what had become an almost mythical coney island after the buildup I got from the pdx gang. So I got off I84 at 43rd and headed towards hippie street on 39th. I parked near Showcase and walked back up east toward nick's. Just a few doors past the Bagdad in this pic.




I pushed open the door and could smell the chili and kosher dogs in the kitchen. My brother in law headed straight for the bucket in the back and I surveyed the various sports pics and newspaper cut outs. Two beer tap handles read: Budweiser and Budweiser I thought to myself.

We sat down and to my embarassment Bro in law asks what beers they had I guess he didn't see the taps. The little black pepper haired buck fiddy dude in the apron squeaked "bud". and looked at us like we were the two stupidest fooks in Portland on that day.

I ordered a bud and a single coney with the macaroni salad.


I have to say, it was the best coney I've had since I can remember. The spicy chily with lots of tomato and chili chunks was great, the dogs were tasty, and he used two thick slices of cheddar instead of shredded chez. nice. We paid at the bar and were on our way. I remembered an old coot telling me to pack the TUMS If I went to nicks, and that moring before leaving Bend I even eyeballed them in the cabinet and said "BAAAAAA, I can handle it!"

I couldn't function properly until just before game time. And even then, my guts were too bloated and molten to enjoy pounding all the $8 brews.
Couldn't drink all night.


Nick's kicked my ass.

I went to Nicks just before I left town.

My routine is the double coney with onion. I then add mustard and have a beer or two. Gas begins to build up quicker than that out of control nuclear reactor in the movie "The China Syndrome." You must go tandem, and chew tums along with Gas X, or you risk a blown O ring.

Hot dogs reattach themselves from Nicks...how that happens, I don't know. You know it happens because you'll recognize your teeth marks in the blown out dog barks.

Luth, we ended up crashing at this little shitlo right by the rose garen. For some reason I thought that my reservations were for the even SHITIER shilo by the conv. center. Abu wasnice enought to tellme that he had no reservations for me and to go to the rose garden shilo and fook myself.

after the game we were at that 711 right next door and while I was at the checkout, two of portland's finest Luth juniors walked in said hi ( I was the only white guy) and then walked around like they owned the place. One cop went right for the soda machine and filled up his 55 gallon drum, the other made right for the sink behind the counter! (I remembered Luth's story about the bumb in the bar bathroom spreading shit on the walls, and shrugged thinking I would be trying to wash the meth tard grease off any chance I got too)

Do the mini mart hajis all let the cops have their way in the store, like in exchange for stopping by often on a saturday night?

Dins is quite familiar with this legendary stretch of road. A few blocks up the street from the site of the Great Portland Snowball Riot Of 2004(chronicled on one of these boards...as a follow up, I'll say that I didn't end up serving any jail time...BODE me).

If you don't mind hippie chicks (despite what some of these retards think, there's some fucking SMOKING hot hippie chicks out there...and lots of nasty ones, too), if it takes you more than 5-10 minutes to find pussy in Hawthorne, you are officially a loser or JTR, whichever is more applicable.

Nothing like eating pizza on the sidewalk in front of the Bagdad, slurping brews (during lunch break...of course), and hitting on every hot chick that wals by (about every 30 seconds), and making fun of all the freaks.

In summary, I've flat torn that hood up on many occasions. Many. But I've never had a Nick's. I usually either hit the Bagdad for za, or go to that burrito joint across the street and up a couple of blocks.

Then, off to The Space Room, for the stiffest drinks in town (rivalled only by the Tillicum out West). I watched two really hot lezbos doing it in one of the crushed-red-velvet booths in the Space Room. I have a hard time finding fault with the Space Room after that.

And the Sevvy by the Rose Quarter? Me and a friend once got so ballsed at a game that we thought it was a good idea to burn some herb in the 7-11 parking lot. Two of Portland's almost-finest pulled up and caught a full view of our indescretions. They did and said nothing...because we were the only white guys. Sucks to be you, Risa.
