HP: With the formation of the Big 12 Conference, were you for that or against that?

Tom: I wasn’t too excited about that, I thought we had a very good league with the Big 8 and we had a very strong conference and the Southwest Conference was falling apart – they had had some major recruiting scandals, they were having a terrible time drawing fans to some of their games and so the teams down there that were viable were Texas A&M, Texas Tech was pretty viable, Houston was at times good, they didn’t draw very many fans and then of course Baylor and SMU and TCU. SMU and TCU had run afoul of NCAA and they were really struggling for attendance so they kept Baylor and dropped Houston and SMU and TCU and the idea was that they were going to join the Big 8 conference and accept our rules and then all of a sudden it was like we started over. All of a sudden it seemed like Texas had a lot of influence on what kind of academic rules we were gonna have, what was going to happen in the conference and I asked the Chancellor of the University at that time, what happened here? I thought they were joining our conference and accepting all of our rules and he said, well we just didn’t want to make them feel bad so we just decided we’d start over, so naturally I didn’t quite understand that procedure because they were struggling and we really kind of threw them a life line and then all of a sudden it was a whole different thing than what I thought it was going to be.

I remember how upset Osborne really was toward the Big 12 for the formulation of new conference guidelines based on Texas pulling the punches. He predicted at that time it would be Texas' conference to rule.
He knew that the lack of population base in the north, the scholarship limitations by the NCAA and Title 9, coupled with the academic guidelines, formulated mostly by Texas, would paint the northern schools in a corner.
He predicted Texas would always get the pick of the cream of the crop followed by the other Texas schools and Oklahoma, who has always been a favorite with Texas kids, still being relatively close to home.
The pickins in the talent rich state of Texas becomes depleted after the home towners feed and the academic ineligibles (Big 12 style) are off the table.
Same holds true in other locals such as California and Florida.
These kids land on there feet at other schools whose guidelines meet NCAA criteria, but not the Texas driven Big 12 rules.

Oh, I'm quite familiar with it and have used it countless times over the past 4 or 5 years. I used to visit it daily, (news items) but now other options, (some not quite so homerish) are available.
It's good for quick access to a stat from ANY NU game ever played or finding coaching info, & digging up trash on Flullaloes, Mildkittys, and the like.

I believe his words were: "I want to send a welcome to the state that thinks they invented football from the state that perfected it.

I respect Tom Osborne but this is one subject that he is in left field on. He is right on one thing, Texas did call the shots and not the other way around.

The SWC had one marquee match up left, aTm/ut. The Big 8 in football had OU/NU, NU/CU, OU/CU, NU/MU, NU/KSU, MU/KU, OSU/NU & OU/OSU.

The Big 8 in the decade before the texass schools were invited to the conference had three different programs win national titles in football. The SWC zero. In Basketball 7 different teams amongst 3 different programs got to the Final Four from the Big 8. The SWC zero. Everyone on this board I am sure are aware of the difference in our Bowl packages. The Orange Bowl was a Big 8 Bowl from 1968 on.

In the two decades before the Big 8 sent both a school to the Orange Bowl and to either the Sugar or Fiesta Bowl TWELVE times. The #3 team then would go to the Citruss Bowl. The SWC had the Cotton a bowl a bowl that the Big 8 would on rare occasion when they weren't in the Sugar or Fiesta send their #2 team.

From the post season revenue aspect alone the SWC conference was severly lacking in comparrison to the Big 8. The Big 8 was going to bring in four teams regardless of if it was going to be ut or not. The Salt Lake City and Las Vegas markets aren't exactly small.

You could have taken your ass to the Pac 10 it wouldn't have killed us by any means. aTm was not going to follow you to the Pac 10 regardless of what you think. aTm was coming to the Big 12 or it would have reapproached the SEC. The SEC had no interest in Texass. They knew your University was trouble and wanted no part of it hence they invited Arkansas and aTm before settling on South Carolina rather than invite texass. Seeing as though the SEC had already brought in Ark and SC the money would have been on aTm ending up with us regardless of what texass did and honestly looking back on it it would have been better off for us. We could have brought in aTm (and a large portion of the texass market) without the dead weight of texass ideologies, Tech, and Baylor. BYU, Colorado State, Utah, New Mexico, Tulsa, UNLV, Memphis, and Nevada would have all jumped at the offer to join the conference. Arkansas and LSU would have both been possibilities as well. The Big 8 was going to grow and get better with or with out you.

If not for the idiot Donnie Duncan being in charge of the OU Athletic Department seeing dollar signs roll through his dreams and threatning the other Big 8 institutions, behind the scenes, that Oklahoma was going to jump ship if texass wasn't accomodated, it is more than likely that texass would have been left out in the rain before the formal offer was made.

You can add all the Kansas and Okie corporate boosters and they wouldn't touch the combo of Intel, AMD and Dell alone. BTW Texas has several Billionaires also banking them: Michael Dell, Nasser Al-Kharafi & family, Sulaiman Bin Abdul Al Rajhi, Charles Butts, Red McCombs, Joe Jamal, Robert McNair, Dan Duncan, and Christopher Goldsbury. Thats just the short list.

It comes from the combonation of Texas being the biggest draw in Houston DFW San Antonio Austin and having the 2nd largest alumni base. According to merchandise sales they have the largest following of T-shirt fans right now. Of course it doesn't touch ND right now but it isn't far behind.

Suncoast, since you have all this money, why don't you have a bigger athletic budget? I think Texas has one of the top 5 budgets and we are getting results for that money.

Gotta agree with him there. Even here in Southern Indiana, I see at least one puke orange tshirt almost every day. And I live in a town of 11,000 people. Even the neighbor's kid now wears a t.u. hat every day and says he wants to be a whorn. Sickens me. The last public release of Athletic budgets had the University of Texass at 82 million dollars per annum and University of Oklahoma 76 million dollars per annum. A difference of 6 million dollars. Tell me if Texass is so much superior and has so much more money why are they only out spending Oklahoma by a measly 6 million dollars, moron? Oklahoma and Texass are both tied for the largest Athletic departments, in the conference, supporting 16 programs a piece.

You may continue to KYOA with asinine remarks if you wish though.

That same list has Oklahoma at #4 Indy. The Only schools infront of us last year were Texass, Georgia, and Notre Dame (I'm not sure about Notre Dame). Nebraska is in the top 10, both Oklahoma State and aTm are in the top 20. Also a large portion of texass sales, unfortunatly, are attributable to OU fans using their logo upside down.

As I stated before desparity in what our Athletic budgets are is only 6 million dollars.
