Name one prominent republican who has proposed "Replacing standard biology textbooks with the Book of Genesis".Terry in Crapchester wrote:You don't get it, do you, Jimmy? I'll dumb it down for you, then.
What some yayhoo in Montana believes about the origins of the world affects my life not a bit. However, what a local school board chooses to have the school district teach my children about the origins of the universe affects me greatly, as they will need to be at least functionally literate in science in order to succeed in the world. Replacing standard biology textbooks with the Book of Genesis will not accomplish that.
Now, unfortunately, there is an assault on evolution from some in the political spectrum. Those leading this assault are all Republicans (although not all Republicans are behind this assault).

Nice links, BTW, Terry...
Vice President Al Gore, the Democratic front-runner who has been a strong
advocate of scientific education, favors teaching evolution but believes
local authorities have the right to teach creationism as well, said
spokesman Alejandro Cabrera.
"The vice president favors the teaching of evolution in public schools.
Obviously, that decision should and will be made at the local level and
localities should be free to decide to teach creationism as well," Cabrera
said.
When told of Gore's statement, Eugenie Scott, executive director of the
National Center for Science Education, responded: "My God, that's
appalling!"

Obviously you're wrong about ID, but aside from that....
Fuck that. The reason our military is as superb as it is is the fact that is all-volunteer. Now if you wish to make veteran status mandatory for holding elective office (or voting for that matter) you might have an argument...I think involuntary military service should be required of all 18-20 year olds.

Well, the fact that it was at Crap in Terrychester's expense doesn't suck much at all, either. But still, I would've applauded that effort had it been at my expense as well.
Poor Crappy, still trying to save face afterwards, is even more humorous and revealing.

So why are Civil War soldiers 'better prepared' (in that they could shell out for their own, if they can afford it) than the US soldiers in Iraq right now who are denied the right to privately buy themselves better armor since the US government is not supplying suitable armor to them?mvscal wrote:Total crap. They'd be less afraid if they were better armored. Less afraid equals more confidence. More confidence is good for morale. But that's my ignorance speaking on such things, oh he who feeds pork to starving muslims and laughs about it.Soldiers afraid for their lives?!? During war?!? .....my God.If our soldiers are afraid for their lives out there....
I will alert the media at once.
Rumsfield was called out a couple years ago over how bad things are.
Are you saying that soldiers shouldn't expect anything from their government except expensive toys and duct tape patch jobs for the field?
that soldiers should expect to be punished if they 'augment' their armor (or lack of armor) in any way to prevent death?
on a short leash, apparently.
I think I've made it known that I'm pretty anti-Iraq War, but I'm not going to make up bullshit to support my position.
Weekend before last, I had the honor of attending my old buddy's retirement ceremony in honor of his 20 years of dignified service in the USAF(they were just about making up new awards and decorations to give the guy -- RACK him). My buddy is a disabled veteran, courtesy of the Iraq War. He has become good friends with a Marine, due to them both spending a lot of time at the VA. Anyhoo, Marine Corporal Anderson is also a disabled vet. While taking up his position to secure the perimeter of a town where there was an insurgent attack, his unit made a boo-boo, and Mr. Bad Guy jumped out from behind and lit him up with an AK47. 7 freaking times, as a matter of fact(apparently, Mr. Bad Guy changed his name to Mr. Vapor very shortly thereafter). A few hit his leg, and up into his back. There were two shots that would have hit paydirt and probably done him in, except his two layers of body armor deflected them.
My buddy somehow got hornswaggled into riding shotgun on convoy truck. For those that don't know, that's one of the higher-risk jobs in Iraq, which my friend refers to as "RPG target practice for Arabs." Any time he wasn't in his bed pretty much, he was also wearing not one, but two armored vests.
From what he and others veterans/recently deployed military personnel have told me, everybody is wearing two vests pretty much any time they're outside. Even when it's 130 degrees outside.
So, you'll excu8se me if I'm more inclined to believe firsthand accounts than what some muckraking "journalist" has to say about it. And believe it or not, spending the weekend with a bunch of people, most of whom have been to Iraq, often more than once...I heard some crazy freaking stories.
And until it came up in my friend's retirement speech, I never knew his father, whose company I enjoyed so much as a teen(Jim died quite a few years ago) was at the Battle of the Bulge. So I guess I'll just have to RACK him posthumously.
Off we go into the wild blue yonder

Yes, I do believe it's against the rules to show up for duty without both of your vests on.Risa wrote:That's against rules, isn't it?
I was also told it's against the rules to show up for duty in short sleeves, or to roll your sleeves up while on duty, even when it's 130 out. Don't know why, and neither did my buddy, but he speculated that it was because a lot of troops were having severe allergies to the species of sandfleas in the region. Says a lot of dudes are running around with all kinds of nasty looking welts on their forearms from the fleas.
But, rules were made to be broken, I guess. One rule I'd be less inclined to break would be the one where I'm supposed to put on both of the vests, though.

Makes perfect sense to me. I grew up hearing tales of the brutal weather in the Middle East, as my Dad worked in the oil fields of Abadan in the early 50's. He seemed to agree that the shit is "no joke." I think he said his hottest day there was something like 136...and windy. Contrary to the John Wayne myth of American military prowess and its core of the Essential American Character, America has NEVER really been inclined towards war or, much less, really prepared to fight. On the ground, anyway. Every single war we've entered--usually dragged--we've hurridly sent untrained masses of young men into meat grinders.
Start with the Civil War--what Ezra Pound called "the suicide of the Anglo Saxon race" pretty much defined senseless bulk carnage until,
WWI--where completely unprepared--and bitterly resenting having been drafted--American boys marched straight into the worst meatgrinder--50,000 or so in a year--imaginable, until,
WWII--Oh look, it's the seriously trained marines rolling up on Iwo Jima--straight into a trap that makes Sir Winston's Gallipoli plan seem brilliant by comparison--thank god for the air corp...hey, it's
Korea--where American forces--who had to be drafted--were prepared to be bogged down in a horrid standoff...like,
Viet Nam--where Bogged Down becomes Quagmire of completely unprepared low income, uneducated American army who resent being drafted, and can't win...just like
Wakey Wake--the volunteer army where you can't leave, fighting the War against an abstract noun. Sure we can send in a goodly number of special crack troops--the nazis called these guys SS--we call them Special Forces and "contractors." But if you think the regular foot soldier is still--or ever really was--part of the true American character, you're full of shit. Recruitment is falling quicker than the Chimp.

Sure, neither Korea, Vietnam, or Iraq were any threat to those freedoms, but the Japanese and Germans sure the hell were. And believe it or not, Americans have better things to do with their time than to spend all day/year preparing for something that might happen. But when that threat comes, as it did in 1941, the brave men and women of America stepped up to the plate and did what needed to be done, at great cost.
And now, you try and diminish their efforts?
Disgusting.
