Again, since I don't want to be piled on in the music forum I figured what the hell...mods obviously if you need to move it do so...but I know a lot of the guys posting in here share the same musical tastes that I do so this makes sense and with Spring Ball winding down there is not a lot to do but bitch slap board tards and wait...so with that being said...here goes...
I am in my mid-30's and grew up listening to Hair Bands and Heavy Metal with some 80's pop inserted at various points...plus I grew up playing drums which is why Rush is my all time favorite band...some questions for the group in there:
1) What are some of your favorite bands?
2) Did/have you ever played guitar, drums, etc...if so who were your major influences?
3) Have your tastes changed radically now that you might be older and supposedly wiser?
Well here goes...my all time favorite bands:
Rush - The whole library
Korn - Again the whole library
Pantera - Even the new Damageplan disc was not bad RIP Dimebag!
Metallica - I am not going to not list them just because Re-Load and St. Anger sucked
Anthrax - Liked every album..Charlie benante is a beast behind the kit...I would consider them the rap metal pioneers
Rage Against the Machine - Pretty much like the whole range of their albums
Alice In Chains - Had a distinctive sound and Facelift was absolutely a kick ass album...
Slipknot - Love the first two albums
Megadeath - Peace Sells, So far So good...awesome!
of course there are lots of hair bands and some other metal bands like Limp Bizkit, King's X, Faith No More, etc that I still listen to and what not...but as you can see I am mostly rooted in the hard shit but not the hard shit like Slayer or stuff like that...
Growing up a drummer Neil, Lars, Tommy Lee (go ahead and laugh), Vinnie, Charlie, were all the ones I listened to intently...recently I have taken a huge liking to David Silverra, John Otto, etc...althou the drummer from Tool played some cool shit...
Thoughts? Discussions? Pile On?
Most people have a hard time believing I like Rush, Korn and Pantera...but hey...whatever floats your boat I guess...my tastes have not radically changed but I do find myself listening to more hard rock, rock influenced bands...

I too am child of the 80's and grew up on the Hair metal and hardrock of the day. I was a huge Iron Maiden fan until I hear Metallica. They to me are a great band. I agree that re-load and St. Anger sucked but they still put on a great show. I cannot wait for the new album. It is being produced by Rick Rubin.
Albums that I love:
1. Master of Puppets. Greatest Hard rock album ever
2. Among the Living. Anthrax rule.
3. Cowboys from Hell. Huge Pantera guy.
4. Season in the Abyss. Slayer are still giong strong

KSE "The End of Heartache" is my favorite disc right now. I swear I listen to it a few times a day. Everything is tuned down 1 1/2 step so it is really heavy.
I told my wife that when I die there are 2 songs that I want played at my funeral. The first is "Comfortably Numb." I think that is the greatest guitar solo I have ever heard. The second is "Welcome Home...Sanitarium"
kid of the late 80's but never listened to those spandex clad hair bands.

Hit my big bad teen years during the late 80s. Even though it was winding down and crossing over to thrash/ speed metal, I did my time in the local Austin punk scene. Played bass guitar for a band in high school called Society's Joke. Played one kegger before dad caught wind and reamed my ass for allowing my degenerate friends to "borrow" so much of our musical equipment(dad played in a C&W band part time for nearly 20 years). I think I have over 500 punk releases on vinyl. Rarely listen to them any more and can't remember last time I picked up a musical instrument. Some how I went off the deep end and now am pretty much a hick. I like my music to have some fiddle and steel guitar mixed in. Pretty screwed up full circle I've traveled. Never got into the metal stuff. Too many solos, too much hair, and way too long of songs.

edit: BTW, this is not a stupid joke about gays in Austin. the Butthole Surfers were probably the best indie/punk band out of Austin...that i can think of.

I saw the Surfers a couple of times, but unless you're really loaded they never sounded that good to me. Burrhole Surfers and Scratch Acid were a couple of "noise" bands I never eally got into. Same goes for Jesus Lizard. Back then I was more into 3 chord gems more than anything else. As far as MDC they preceded my punk stage by a few years. Bands like MDC and DRI started off in Texas but later moved to the west coast where the "scene" was larger. They only real big Austin band during the heyday of early 80's Austin punk was the the Big Boys. The Butthole Surfers actually recorded their first album in the garage of one of the Big Boys. BTW my first "show" was probably about 1985 at the Ritz Theater. I was in middle school and my mother actually dropped me off to see Suicidal Tendencies play with GBH.

i'd say it's the butthole surfers in terms of indie influence. The guitarist from Dangerous Toys was Kevin Fowler. He has since embarked on a solo honky tonk career. If you like true Texas dancehall honky tonk then he is the current king.

Saw Pantera twice and they FUCKING tore it up both time...probably one of the best live shows I have seen...
Rush is a great band to see live...but depenging on your taste...PANTERA though was fucking loud, hostile, and tight...they just brought ir for two hours...FUCKING AWESOME...

Got a guitar when I was 16 (I'm 32 now). Took a few lessons but never really got any further than learning a few rudimentary blues scales and the riffs for a bunch of metal songs.
Started playing bass in a honky-tonk/country band (see sig) about 2 1/2 years ago. I enjoy it, but I really need to take some lessons to get my playing to the next level.

Somewhat. I've opened up to a lot of stuff that I might not have been into as a head-banging, mullet-sporting teenager. But I still love good heavy metal. I'll always be a metalhead first and foremost.

I have their last 2 albums. I'm not really a fan of the new singer on End of Heartache. Honestly, I think I'm just starting to get sick of that particular sound (the whole melodic vocals/screaming vocals alternation). It seems like every other band I hear on Hard Attack has that same KSE-inspired sound. I guess it's better than the late 90s/early 00s nü metal & rap metal movements, but it's starting to wear on me just the same.

Yep, those guys could definitely put on a show. I went to see them in Omaha on the Trendkill tour and it was crazy. At one point, my friend and I were pretty close to the front of the stage. They started playing "Planet Caravan," so we figured it'd be the perfect time to spark a bowl. I barely finished taking one hit when Phil stops in the middle of the song, says "fuck this shit. Let's play somethin' heavy," and they break into "Suicide Note Pt. 2." So much for that bowl. We were suddenly in the middle of a giant pit.
The only thing that sucked is that Pantera always drew the skinhead crowd, and those guys are some mean motherfuckers.
RE: Rush
Sorry, the stuff I've heard (which is admittedly just the classic rock radio stuff) is pretty annoying. It's weird, because I like a lot of bands that were influenced by Rush (TMV, Co & Ca, Fate's Warning), but I've never been able to get into Rush themselves. I've thought about picking up a CD to see if some of the "non-hit" songs are any better. It seems like the consensus is that Moving Pictures is their best, but that also has most of their overplayed radio hits, doesn't it?

Have any of you Texas guys heard of Heather Rae & The Moonshine Boys? They're originally from PHX. We used to play with them a lot. They moved to Austin last August. Really cool old-school country. Heather's voice is amazing.
Also, have any of you heard of Thrift Store Cowboys? They are another kick-ass band that played here in PHX a while back. I'm pretty sure they're from Lubbock.
