Maiden Fans ...

Post by RadioFan »

I ordered this and it arrived yesterday:

Image

Iron Maiden, The Early Days

Watched much of it last night.

OutFUCKINGSTANDING.

It's got "Live at the Rainbow," from 1980, with Paul DiAnno. I originally saw this on MTV, back in the days of yore. It is as good as I remember when I saw it on MTV in freakin' high school.

Transyvania and Phantom of the Opera are particularly incredible.

The next live show on the DVD is "Beast Over Hammersmith," recorded the the legendary Hammersmith Odeon for the "Number of the Beast" tour, with B. Dickenson on vocals. This was during arguably the hieght of his vocal powers and dude is simply incredible at this show.

Children of the Dammed and Hallowed be thy Name are simply amazing.

I saw Maiden in San Antonio during the "Number of the Beast" tour. Girlschool, opened, then Maiden played, then the Scorpions (for "Blackout") closed the show. To this day, probably the best pure hard rock concert I've ever seen.

Maiden's performance at Hammersmith is as good as that show in SA.

There are two other concerts on the 2-disc DVD set, along with a 90-minute documentary with Steve Harris and the rest of the guys in and associated with the band, done very recently.

I listened to this DVD running the sound through the player to my amp and EQ, via my Koss headphones, loud. The sound is very good for the "Rainbow" concert, and excellent for the Hammersmith concert.

Highly recommended for anybody who's a Maiden fan, especially their older stuff.

I was a huge Maiden fan back in the day. I saw them in Germany in 1984 on the Powerslave tour. Great show and the opeing band was Motley Crue. I also saw them in 1986 on the Somewhere in Time tour in Belgium. WASP opened.

I have a hard time listening to the new stuff. I haven't like much of it.

Same here. I stopped buying their stuff after "Piece of Mind," which is why this DVD is so good -- only their older, classic stuff is covered.

I was into them early -- bought Killers a few weeks after it came out and was getting my hands on copies of "Krrrrang" magazine in the very early 80s. About that time, the radio market in San Antonio was changing, and they were ceasing to play a lot of the new hard rock bands coming out of England (Maiden, Def Leppard, etc.), unlike the mid- and late-70s, when radio was still fairly independent. Of couse, later when Def Leppard became huge, that changed. Corporate radio HAD to play them, but Maiden still really didn't get much airplay, at least not compared to the posers (Poisen, Bon Jovi, etc.) in the early and mid-80s.

PSU,

I think you'd dig the documentary. They interview DiAnno, and lots of guys who were in the band before they even recorded their first album. Tons of lineup changes in the early years, but Steve Harris was the backbone and kept it together. Pretty unusual stuff. I walked away thinking it was amazing this band even survived.
