I watched the last two shows on Tivo tonight. I come away from the show with a couple of thoughts. First, the inventors are mostly first generation immigrants, minorities and people with relatively little formal education. You didn't see very many yuppies or upper middle class white men. Why? In my opinion, you have to have a lot of capital to make an idea into a product, or you have to be so fucking naive that you go for it despite the difficulties. Rack those crazy mutherfookers who are going for the $1M jackpot. I probably would have given most of them the "Hey, lets be real" speech if they walked into my office. And I would have done them a favor in 99.9% of the cases. But these whack jobs may have a shot, and rack the piss out of them for taking it.

The second thought is that most inventions are really fairly trivial. And thats OK. True breakthroughs are rare. Most of the time things change incrementally. We all make contributions to the improvement of daily life. Some are rewarded financially for it, and some are not. No big deal. The thing about business is that it takes passion and the willingness to be the guy that takes the last shot at the end of the game. You can have a relatively shitty product in this country, but if you hustle and chase after it, you can still do well. Conversely, you can have the greatest product in the world, but if you sit back and wait or take things cautiously, someone else will get it to market and kick your ass.

I think these folks backgrounds actually gives them an advantage over the average Yuppie Joe. They weren't born with 300 satelite channels to rob them of their imaginations...
