So many school projects require the internet these days that it's next to impossible to have a "no internet" rule. But she has to ask first, and I'm not averse to looking over her shoulder.

Actually, mine aren't in nearly as bad a situation as the kid to whom 88 is referring.

My stepdaughter's grades leave a little to be desired (she could be an honor roll student, but has other ideas), but at least we don't have to worry about her passing. She holds a part-time job, and was captain of her cheerleading squad. She tried cigarette smoking once, got busted at school and hit with an in-school suspension, which literally scared her straight in that regard. If she wasn't so boy (or maybe I should say man) crazy, she wouldn't be too much to worry about. Meanwhile, four of her current/former classmates have been or are pregnant before graduating from high school. I'm sure she is quite happy that she's not in that situation, although I'm not so sure that she's connected the dots between that fact and the efforts her mother and I have made on her behalf.

My son, for all his problems, has a lot going for him as well. He's extremely bright, already in an enrichment program at school. He writes short stories (he has a very vivid imagination), plays soccer and football, wrestles, swims and is involved in Cub Scouts.

Not for nothing, but I knew a girl back in the day whose younger sister, apart from being an active participant in my fantasy life was also getting in all sorts of trouble. Her parents and sister were conviinced she would never amount to anything. 20 years later and she's got a phd, a beautiful daugther and a great job teaching English lit at a college. I had a cousin who we were all sure would be in jail by now. He's got his own landscaping business and just closed on his second house last year.

For one thing, she was 8 years old by the time I met her. I'm her stepfather, not her father. And not that I need any reminding about that fact, but she isn't shy about giving it to me. In any event, that probably has something to do with it.

Sounds like mom needs to intervene on her daughter's behalf and, at the very least, get her assessed by a substance abuse agency and, if she's using, get her into treatment. If she's selling, then it's only a matter of time before she gets busted. As for mom....it sounds like she made a decision to NOT be an effective parent and may need more help than daughter IF she really cares enough about her daughter's welfare to seek help for herself. From what's been posted, I'd say that mom is a selfish bitch looking to have a good time and has neglected her parental responsibilities for a number of years. It's no surprise that the daughter is using/selling dope but it's never too late to take action. Problem is, mom will have to make a sincere effort to become a real parent and make significant changes in her life if she expects daughter to do the same. Probably not gonna happen.
