Arrington priced himselfout of the market at the start of FA season. That and his knee surgeries probably made teams leery of signing him. If he stays healthy he will fit in well in NY.
With Usi and Strahan on the ends, and Pierce, Emmons and now Arrington at LB, the Giants are a CB away from one of the best defences in the league (IMO). They have a proven linebacker corp and D-line littered with all-pros.
We'll have to wait till september to see if I'm right......see you on the 17th.

You forgot to mention they are also a good 23 spots away from being ranked #1 in the NFL, and that Freelancer Supreme will be responsible for the whole difference. You also forgot to add Will Demps will be a liability in coverage.al? wrote: With Usi and Strahan on the ends, and Pierce, Emmons and now Arrington at LB, the Giants are a CB away from one of the best defences in the league (IMO).

Pierce is the only decent LB of that group. Emmons is past his prime and if Arrington was as good as he originally priced himself at, then he would have had plenty of teams knocking on his door, especially with the amount of cap room teams had this year. I think the loss of Clancy to that line is going to impact the Giants more than they realize. He was one guy I had hoped the Eagles would go after.al? wrote:Arrington priced himselfout of the market at the start of FA season. It's amazing how fast some of these defenses can become (possibly) the best so quickly.
From a 23-0 playoff shut out giving up 150+ to Deshaun Foster and they may be the best next year?
I didn't know the best defenses in the league last year lost so many people that The G-Men were going to be able to overtake their claims. I know I wouldn't be too worried about the usuals of the past few years fading too fast.
New York could easily have a losing record next year with that schedule and I mean EASILY.

Striving to be a victim of Polly's plagiarizing ways.
You're getting an upgrade, al?. Good on you and yours for that. Sucks for us in certain respects. Maybe he'll play up to his ability consistently for y'all.
I'd have to say good pick-up for the G-men in terms of your need and what he can bring... sometimes. Don't know your cap situation, so the "on paper/on the field" positive rating is as far as I'll go.
He was initially billed as the total package gamebreaker when the 'Skins drafted him. He's had some moments: 'Skinsfan's favorite always being a seahawks game years ago. But his career hasn't been all that (there were reasons beyond his control that contributed to this). Lotta question marks but certainly worth the grab.

Giants were obviously horrible at defending the pass, but were almost top 10 (12th) in defending the rush. LaVar Mercenarrington is not responsible for that entire difference. The yardage stats are misleading, because New York is excellent against the run,and most rushing yards against them came as they had to spread out their zone to compensate for their brutal secondary. Not to mention a lot of yards came against them late ingames when the outcome wasnt in doubt. Arrington's prescnece will improve the pass rush, but the Giants still need a proven cover corner or they will continue to get burnt by the pass.WhatsMyName wrote:

Giants entire starting linebacking corp was injured before that game, and our best second stringer got hurt during that game. After Smith and Delhomme torched the secondary a few times, the zone had to spread out, allowing Foster to run wild through a decimated LB corp......
.....but don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. The Giants defense will be much improved this season. We'll see if you've changed your tune by, say mid-late October.

'Skins played pretty darn good D without Arrington most of the year.
If Gregg Williams can't work a guy like that into his system, there must be something wrong.
At least LaVar kept his word by going with a team that plays Washington twice a year. :P

Dude, no. Look at Nolan's resume.
Then look up when Lavar was drafted, and when he played.
Neely,
Of course the Pats aren't going to go after a player like Lavar. Their shopping style in the free agent market is ultra conservative, and there are question marks all around Lavar. It is good that you're here representing the Pats, because its fun to explain things to you that you should already know about your own team.

That could be read to mean: 'there's something wrong with Gregg Williams". And that could very well be true. Williams is touted as a defensive genius. Someone of that mental calibre is above all and foremost capable of envisioning possibilities. With that in mind GW should have found a way to make everyone happy, but the situation devolved into ego-tripping pissing matches and benching. But its all on Lavar, of course.

If the Patriots feel that there is a player who can help them then they pursue him. They are actually talking to Ty Law right now and I don't forsee him coming cheaply. Oh and then there was the time 3 years ago when they signed Roosevelt Colvin to that HUGE deal. Do your homework before you spout a bunch of BS.......

It' was bandied about WEEI by idiots fans all winter... I actually made the "Whiner Line" one day by telling all Pats fans to stop with the Lavar bullshit. Dude is too stupid to comprehend Belichick's complex schemes... they'd NEVER sign him.
Additionally, the Patriots play EVERYTHING close to the vest and you never hear anyone's name mentioned about anything. Heck, Bill wouldn't even mention Vinatieri by name when he was hounded last week during his yearly pre-draft news conference.... and he's NOT ON THE TEAM ANYMORE.
Know this... your team's most glaring needs are at WR, K (Grammatica is really their plan B), and Secondary... I think they can "get by" on Vrabel, Colvin, and Bruschi for one more year. Don't they still have Beisel and Brown too? Maybe they actually learned the system in the off-season. And they are 15 million under the cap. Patience.
Oh I am patient. I drank the Kool Aid a few years ago. I may not agree with everything they do but it is hard to argue with their track record. I agree that WR and secondary are huge needs. I think they will draft a kicker in the middle rounds and then have a competition between him and Gramatica. I would like to see an LB or two drafted. Or maybe a DE to convert to OLB like they did with McGinest. My original comment was to say that a team that had a need for his services didn't even bring him in so it says something about what the league thinks of him......UCant#2 wrote:Neely8 wrote:Patriots need all sorts of LB help and his name was never mentioned once..........

Come on now!
But none of that is helping him right now. He still views himself as an elite player and wants to be paid accordingly. Teams don't want to overpay for a linebacker who was benched last year and had philosophical differences not only with Redskin defensive guru Gregg Williams but also with former coordinators Marvin Lewis and Mike Nolan. Clubs wonder if he couldn't do it completely right for those three, why should he be different for them?
The knock on Arrington is that he freelances too much, trying to make the big play instead of sticking with his assignment within a team concept. It's what got him on Williams' bad side and it is what annoyed his previous coaches.

Nolan was the of the coaches who helped "draft" Arrington.

and some more for Velo...
Nolan was then asked his opinion of Arrington — who, much like Winborn, has been accused by some of being a "freelancer," who does not play within his team's system.
"He's OK," Nolan said. "I think they have some other guys that are playing pretty good in front of him."
The NFL trading deadline, incidentally, is today. Nolan said he does not expect the 49ers to make any deals.

Briefly: Nolan said that cornerbacks Willie Middlebrooks (hamstring) and Derrick Johnson (knee) could return to practice Wednesday. ... Linebacker Jim Maxwell, formerly of the Giants, was signed. ... Nolan wasn't surprised that Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington was benched for most of Washington's 28-21 loss Sunday in Kansas City. "I think the perception and reality is a little bit off on that one,'' he said. "He's OK. I think they have some other guys who are pretty good in front of him. It might have been time to make a change.''

This is also a trick question... cause he isnt coachable.

Arrington remains a tremendous physical specimen...apart from his knees. The Freelancer tag is a well-deserved one. His style of play can really hinder your scheme, unless you can afford to set him loose ala Palumalu.
As a PSU fan, it's interesting to see Short and LaVar reunited.

I didn't place all of the blame on LaVar, but it's within the realm of possibility.
Word I've heard is that GW didn't care for Arrington's freelancing,
but the injuries certainly didn't help, either.
I don't think the 'Skins will miss him all that much.
LaVar strikes me as someone who spends a little too much time reading his press clippings,
but only the positive ones. :P
