As much lawyer-bashing as goes on at the main board, it would seem that this story could serve as Exhibit A as to how and why a lawyer could be helpful.
Seems to me that if Leinart wanted to room with Jarrett, and that neither could afford the rent, Leinart's dad could have put his son alone on the lease, and his son could have sublet to Jarrett. Under a sublease, Leinart could have charged Jarrett whatever he wanted. Leinart's father then could have made up the difference without running afoul of NCAA rules, or so it would seem to me.
OTOH, if USC violated the NCAA rules, but a relatively simple consultation with an attorney would have kept them clean, I can't see the NCAA coming down too hard on them.

It's a grimy existance around figueroa tech...no doubt matt baby is glad to have that behind him...it's a big transition for an O.C. boy to drop into the armpit of the city and have to pretend to like it. How much would he have said something like this anyway to please the (new) home crowd?...only his dance instructor knows for sure.
