Personal Top 5
1. Ween
2. Tool
3. Clutch
4. Pantera
5. Smashing Pumpkins (would be #2 if you only count their first 3 albums)
Most important/influential
1. CCR
2. Pixies
3. Nirvana
4. Jane's Addiction
5. Slayer
BtH,
I'm pretty sure Hendrix's Band of Gypsies lineup was all American. Maybe you could play it off like that's what you meant...

Buddy Holly and the Crickets and CCR would get a vote from me.
Velvet Underground in the mix somewhere (minus Nico-- guess). Sterling Morrison may have been Scottish?

Metallica is as American as apple pie and bombing 3rd world countries. Unlike the guys in Hendrix's Experience, Lars lived in America before joining the band and has never repatriated. I'm not sure, but I think he's even an American citizen by now.MiketheangrydrunkenCUfan wrote:Same goes for NWA & PE.
Also, Lars Ulrich is Danish, so Metallica doesn't count either.
As for PE, the Carter Family and NWA, I guess I should just say that minds are like parachutes and leave it there.
BTW: Jimi Hendrix can still make this list with the Gand of Gypsies.

Just because that's how I roll.MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:Bsmack,
How the fuck do a bunch of rappers, who weren't even the greatest of their genre crack your list of greatest American rock bands?

Don't get me wrong, I have mad respect for PE and NWA. I just think it's a strech to call them "rock bands." I originally had the Roots on my list, but I took them off once I re-read the criteria.BSmack wrote:

Mgo,
Please say you're trolling. Otherwise, feel free to fill us in on all the rappers who are better than Chuck D, Cube, Ren, and Eazy. There are a few who I'd put on the same level. Rakim and maybe KRS-One. But better?
(If you say Jay Z or Kanye West I will make a special trip to Michigan just to fight you.)

I guess I just have a wider interpretation of the word "rock" than most.MiketheangrydrunkenCUfan wrote:Don't get me wrong, I have mad respect for PE and NWA. First of all, I'm insulted.Mgo,

Actually, I really don't know if there were "better" rappers at that time, just rappers I liked more.
The bestest has to be the firstest - The Comets were grand:
First band leader to form a Rock 'n' Roll group.
First Rock 'n' Roll star to write his own music.
First Rock 'n' Roll star to reach the national charts with music he wrote and recorded.
First Rock 'n' Roll star to own his own music publishing companies.
First Rock 'n' Roll star to own his own record label and recording company.
First white artist to be elected as the "Rhythm & Blues Personality of the Year."
First Rock 'n' Roll star to sell a million records.
First Rock 'n' Roll star to receive a gold rcord.
First Rock 'n' Roll star to go on a world tour.
First Rock 'n' Roll star to sell a million records in England.
First Rock 'n' Roll star to star in a full length motion picture.
First white Rock 'n' Roll star to tour with all-black supporting artists.
First Rock 'n' Roll star to appear on a network televison show.
All those singles you never heard were twice as good as the charted hits. Also, lots of rioting fans.
