Does it count if you looked it up?

General Robert Neyland used to have a bird dog that went at the ball with ferocity and tenacity he admired. That dog's name was Oskie. Therefore, Neyland decided his players would yell out "Oskie" every time they picked off a pass. The intent was for teammates to know the ball had been picked and to set up a return.

Well, where I found it, it was Barrah that was telling the story of how Oskie was brought in to football lore. His daughter named her dog Oskie too.

But like 88, I had not heard it before. Looks to be prevalent in Oklahoma, however.

yeah, must be. as kids playing football in Norman we'd all yell it after an int. it was supposed to alert the D that they were now blockers after the turnover....i imagine at some point it was an unknown phrase to O players as well. sort of a code thing.

this, back when Switzer was running the okie 5-2....which if you had big fast DE's (and he often did) was close to the 3-4. a lot of speed to the corner, ask Nebraska fan how often they beat Switzer's D to the corner, not many times.

too bad our db's could never cover anyone from Miami, though.

Did someone say "Oski"???

Two important Cal symbols are Oski the Bear and the Axe. Cal's mascot, the Golden Bear (a grizzly), was chosen in 1895 by the track team. Live bear cubs toted to early sports events were named Oski, from the popular cheer that begins, 'Oski wow wow! Whiskey wee wee!' An anonymous student in a molded polyurethane bear's head, yellow sweater, blue pants, and big shoes has since replaced a real bear.

The Axe has a colorful past. In 1899, during a Cal/Stanford baseball game, Stanford cheerleaders insulted Cal fans by brandishing an axe while yelling the Stanford cheer, 'Give them the axe, the axe, the axe! Where? Right in the neck, the neck, the neck!' Certain Cal True Blues stole the Axe during an unguarded moment, and an all-out chase ensued through San Francisco and Berkeley alleys.

Oski kicking the shit outta the Stanford Tree, then getting arrested and handcuffed :twisted:

My god!!! The Cal mascot is really William Bendix!! I thought He died like 30 or 40 years ago!!! Just color in the nose its a perfect match!!!

Ok, back to the original question...

"Oski", to the best of my knowledge, is another word for Odin, Norse god of thunder.
I think they spell Oski, O-S-K-I-E, at the University of Illinois.
