man, KU is loaded. the other side of the coin is that Self had better put together some post-season success or the heat is going to come down hard. plus, a lot of these guys are 2 years max--with someone like Rush or Arthur the better they play, the closer they are to leaving......kind of a diminshing returns thing.

On a certain level I agree with what you are saying that the better they play, the sooner the leave and that is true. However, the better they play, the better Kansas performs and that is a good thing. Whatever happens, happens. Everybody said Rush was one and done as well.King Crimson wrote:man, KU is loaded. the other side of the coin is that Self had better put together some post-season success or the heat is going to come down hard. plus, a lot of these guys are 2 years max--with someone like Rush or Arthur the better they play, the closer they are to leaving......kind of a diminshing returns thing.
Self does seem to be able to recruit well, so I don't think that will be a problem. Frankly, I think he's going to have some problems with minutes next year. There might be some very unhappy "ballers" sitting on the bench.
You are right about feeling the heat if he doesn't have some post-season success. I hope he does, but who knows, it should be a fun ride the next couple of years.

Self has raided Oklahoma for some major talent the last couple of years and I think that door is about to be shut on him by Capel and company. Kelvin was horrible at getting in state talent to OU and to stay once they got there; Jeremy Case (KU), Marques Hayden (Michigan State), Sheldon Williams (Duke), DeAngelo Alexander (Charlotte, though this was because he committed academic fraud while at OU), Kellena Azumbuike (Kentucky), ect. Those are just the names off the top of my head. If we had pulled those kids along with just some of the talent we already had we could have won a couple of national titles. :(Mook wrote:On a certain level I agree with what you are saying that the better they play, the sooner the leave and that is true. JR Giddens was a John Marshall OKC recruit as well....just to add to the list. Ryan Humphrey would qualify in the category of not keeping them (OK talent)....though obviously he did sign him.

Giddens was another play who Mr. Davis in Edmond bought and sold; just didn't get caught with J.R. Glad you brought him though. He was one recruit I wasn't disappointed in losing in the least though. Tons of talent but we saw what he has done with talent... the same thing as before he was in college, commit crime.King Crimson wrote:JR Giddens was a John Marshall OKC recruit as well....just to add to the list. I was going to bring up Thomas, but he was originally a NY kid and only went to HS at Booker T--more or less. that's my understanding.
so, him going back east to Syracuse....makes some sense.
and the Azuibuike thing resulted in the very very brief OU career of Rashaad Carruth. 2 weeks, 3 weeks?

not sure about Okafor (and hardly the same) but Jake Voskuhl who was on the UCONN championship team with Rip Hamilton and Khalid El-AMin was a Oklahoma kid from somewhere....i think.
Tubbs (though it's a tricky comparison given the states of the two programs--and KS obviously didn't start from where Billy did) didn't do that great either in-state. outside Tisdale(s) and Choo and Terry Evans I can't think of too many OK kids. while on the other side: you've got Steve Hale to UNC, Mark PRice to G-Tech, Brent Price to S. Carolina (and then back), sackfull of in state kids to OSU--some quality players to Tulsa--, Kevin Pritchard was from Tulsa and went to Kansas--was on the 88 Jayhawk team.
though overall, i think it's fair to say the overall talent in the state is much higher today at all classifications.
edit: probably include Stacey King and Minor among the OK kids for Billy.

It was DA. There was a lot of bad blood between the Christian school that Azumbieke went to and Mid West City from the state tourny. It was when we still thought we had a shot at Sheldon Williams. Kelvin figured we had the best shot at Sheldon and DA and as a package deal at that. Just didn't pan out.Believe the Heupel wrote:Don't forget Etan Thomas.
Azubuike committed to OU originally and Kelvin pulled his offer. Either DA or Bookout had something to do with that-said they wouldn't play with him.
Crimson: Billy didn't have nearly as much talent in state HS ball as KS did. Oklahoma HS basketball has really taken off since 1998. Jake Voshkul lived in Oklahoma for awhile but he was military brat and was a lot like me in the sense that he really wasn't "from" anywhere he just lived a lot of places.
Ryan Minor was coming to Oklahoma regardless of who the coach was. He was the Kevin Bookout of his day. His father was an athelete at OU as was his mother and an older sibling: not too mention his twin who was coming to OU for baseball come hell or highwater.

within reason (86 NC and 2000--too young in 75 to really appreciate/understand it) that CWS is one of my favorite OU moments.
i watched most of those games at this tiny /neighborhood biker bar--affixed to pretty decent mexican restaurant around the corner from my house...where they had 75 cent Bud drafts and free (mostly stale) chips and salsa--(their chile verde was rocking). i was working on a farm at the time.....so that was right in my wheelhouse price-wise. the bikers thought i was a poser....but grew to tolerate me. and some, even liked me after a while.
i remember walking down there the day of the final game....nervous. GT had Veritek and Nomar, how 'bout that?
also, Mark PRice never had a shot to go to OU. his dad Denny Price had played for OU but Denny felt disrespected somehow by the program (maybe thought he should have been consideration for the job when Bliss went to SMU?--something like that)...and steered Mark well away from OU. he, Hale, and Tisdale were all in the same class.

1992-1994 at Tech:
In his Junior season, Nomar hit .427 for Tech, hitting 16 homeruns and becoming only the first player in school history to reach 100 hits in a season. He also helped lead Tech to their first ever appearance in the college world series. Honors that year included: 1st Team All-ACC, All-ACC Tourney Team, Outstanding Player at Midwest II Regional, All-College WS Team, 1st Team All-American (By ABCA, Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, and NCWBA). Red Sox General Manager and all-around visionary Dan Duquette made the impressive junior his first Red Sox draft pick (12th overall) in the 1994 June Draft.

edit: i love that line about Duquette: "all around visionary".....he can see 360 degrees or what?

YES, my father and I were there!!! He requested leave and snatched me up out of school and we just hit the road to Omaha. One of the best memories I have with my father was that week in Omaha with him, my uncle, and my aunt. What was better was when both of the twins (Damon and Ryan) both went yard back to back against Arizona State in our second game against them.Believe the Heupel wrote:Remember that ball Damon Minor yoked against Georgia Tech in the CWS? I swear that ball STILL hasn't landed.

He wanted atleast an assistants position, BIlly was hired and didn't want him on staff for some reason. I have heard Mark still wishes he had gone to OU. Brent did the right thing and came back home, though. I'm related to them as well in some weird way through my mom's side of the family.King Crimson wrote:also, Mark PRice never had a shot to go to OU. his dad Denny Price had played for OU but Denny felt disrespected somehow by the program (maybe thought he should have been consideration for the job when Bliss went to SMU?--something like that)...and steered Mark well away from OU. he, Hale, and Tisdale were all in the same class.

Interesting.......I hadn't heard anything, I guess I'll have to put my ear to the ground. I suppose it wouldn't be shocking, Rush has never been one to hide is indifference towards the classroom.Believe the Heupel wrote:I've heard pretty credible noise that Brandon Rush isn't going to be one of the guys looking for minutes-at least for the first semester.
