Until Dave or another Admin can check this out and make sure it isn't a malicious Virus or Spyware, Do not enter this thread. I'm not going back to investigate what the fuck needs the Active Control so until it is cleared I suggest you don;t open the Thread.

I run all the standard file apps so when I see a "Browser Helper Object" that doesn't work because I lock out all of the net crap I usually figure it's something I don't want or it's malicious.

better safe than sorry.

Maybe Todd got lucky and someone he spent so much time explaining how much he thinks they suck are at present time enjoying mirroring all his files for later fun.

OK, here is what I did. Every week I always run Ad-aware SE, and then SpyBot Search and Destroy. After reading this thread I was concerned so I first ran Adaware SE. It found like 37 critical objects, whatever that is supposed to mean and I had it remove them. Then I ran SpyBot (just in case Adaware missed something) and I got zero bad juju hits.

Then I followed mouse's link to that Xoft software shit. I downloaded it and ran that, and I get what is listed above in the picture. WTF is a Viewpoint Media player? I googled it and it is just some media player plugin for windows etc. I use WMP and on occasion VLC.

OK, I admit I don't know how all this shit works. I can wytch, I can animate...I don't know diddly about hijacking browsers and shit. Did I get this shit by being in that thread that Y2K talks about or did I get it visiting Hooter Highway Jerkin' Jamboree last night? I use Norton Internet Security and download all those virus definitions all the time. So now, I've got a couple of questions for the admins, Y2K or anybody with more knowledge on this than me:

1. This xcontrol thing that Tarddown supposedly put into his post...did this just happen unknowingly or did he really place it there for malicious reasons? If he did, can this be proved?

My guess is this...Todd had no idea what he linked or posted would do anything bad. Every day we have people linking news stories etc., so I'd guess anybody could unknowingly do this. After seeing your log file I know now what component was trying to load.
Viewpoint Player is just more redundant Internet crap that isn't harmfull in itself but contains tracking minibots designed to record a users website travels for marketing stat geeks.
Anyone using Internet Explore should go to the Advanced Options panel and disable any Install on Demand functions so before a control can run you will get a pop-up asking you if you want to add a Active X (AKA Browser Helper) component. Many programs like Spybot, Adaware ect. also give you the option to "Lock" the panel, I suggest you use it as well. Indeed the Media File was the culprit.

Alrighty now, we are getting somewhere. Todd is not a devious guy after all and he is in good standing. He's not even in the penalty box.

I went in and disabled the "install on demand" stuff in IE...I only saw 2 boxes to uncheck, so I did that.

So how do I get rid of the Viewpoint files since Adaware/Spybot didn't pick them up? **edit** Viewpoint was an application and all I had to do was go to add/remove programs and it is GONE.

In the mean time, I'm going to fool around and see if I can just locate the files and delete them the old fashioned way.

Also.

In the Internet Options panel under Programs you will see a tab called
Manage Add-Ons

Once open you will see all the objects that are Installed and can Disable (or enable) them. If you see Viewpoint or something you don't immediately recognize you have some control over their function.

The publisher of the Browser Helper Object is also listed as well.

Y2K, are you sure? I went to Internet Options/Programs and I really didn't have any tabs...had a window that had HTML editor, email, newsgroups etc...but nothing like anything you said. I checked each drop down menu but nada.

In IE with Windows XP there should be two tabs under all the drop down menus
One to reset web settings and another to manage Add-ons
