but mos def worth it. you got to earn it. we show up at the venue and the Fall aren't even in town yet and have not contacted the booking agent or venue. so, we sit around drinking beer for about an hour or so figuring we got hosed (a sentiment confirmed by a buddy who works in the ticket office)....and may/may not get a refund. sit through a very mediocre opening act--sort of like Gary Lee Connor of Screaming Trees sitting in with the Monkees ripping off "the Kids are All Right" for 6-7 songs--anda very average closing cover of Donovan's Atlantis (still no word from the Fall until about 75% of the way through their set). they here, finally.
perhaps as compensation for the well-documented problems of the US tour so far.....fans get to sit through a very abrasive and overly long (though clever but brutally repetitive) video that's about 40 mintues long.
the Fall minus Smith come on stage and play for about 10 mintues. he weaves onto stage....kind of jakes it for a couple tunes, fiddles with all the other players amp knobs, takes a mic away from the guitarist, re-adjusts the bass drum mic repeatedly throughout the set, takes off his jacket......and then sort of takes over in a kind of stumbling over mic wires, slip-shod this is how it's gonna be--my way......and they fucking rocked. great show. really fucking great. really, just a powerful figure in music.
but, it doesn't come cheap in the experience department.

it was pretty fucking amazing. i'd put it in the same league as seeing Sonic Youth on the Daydeam tour, or the flaming lips open for husker du in okc in 1986, the pixies on the doolittle tour....but with all history behind it.
it was about the best 20 bucks i ever spent. i was totally blown away. it was a small venue and i stood right by the stage and about 15 feet from Smith...what can you say? like i say, he just took over.

they played a lot of stuff from the latest record Heads Roll--which i had only heard 2 or 3 times before that so most of that was kind of mysterious. some stuff i didn't recognize....their catalog being quite large. they played Put Away and Theme from Sparta FC i'm pretty sure.
i suspect they played a pretty limited set list due to the band being new...and probably all the shows pretty similar. the bass player and the guitar player more than acquitted themselves nicely.
