Clemens signs with Astros

Roger Clemens is making yet another comeback with the Houston Astros, Newsday has learned. An announcement is expected as soon as today.
Clemens, 43, has signed a one-year deal that is believed to be worth about $3.5 million per month, which will probably equate to about $10.5 million for the season, depending on when exactly he returns to action.
The seven-time Cy Young Award winner, who turns 44 in August, has a career record of 344-172. After the Astros declined to offer him salary arbirtation last winter, they forefeited the right to re-sign him until May 1. But Clemens, who broke down physically at the end of last season, seemed intrigued by the idea of pitching only part of a season.
Clemens makes his full-time home in Houston, and his son Koby is a prospect in the Astros' system. While he identified the Yankees, Red Sox and Rangers as other candidates for his services, the Astros seemed a strong favorite - over retirement, as well - these past few months.

ST. LOUIS – Roger Clemens may very well be ready to announce he’ll play this season, but Astros owner Drayton McLane and general manager Tim Purpura were still waiting on Tuesday afternoon.
“We haven’t finished the deal yet,” McLane said via phone from Temple. “They told us a month ago or longer that Roger has to make the decision that he has to come back.”
A report out of New York stated that a decision could be announced today, but McLane and Purpura were surprised because they were still waiting for an answer from Clemens’ agents, Randy and Alan Hendricks.
“We’ve been standing by,” McLane said. “Tim or I have talked to him every two or three days. They haven’t given us a decision. They haven’t said a word to us about it. That’s complete news to me. We haven’t finalized the deal yet nor has he told us. Boy that’s total news to us.”
As he has said all along, however, McLane remains optimistic.
“I’m very optimistic because we haven’t heard anything to the contrary,” McLane said. “So I’m extremely optimistic we’re going to get a deal done. If it will happen, I don’t know when. I’m very optimistic.”
The Astros opened negotiations on May 1 with a prorated deal worth a little over $20 million for the season. Since then, the Astros have raised their offer a bit, a person close to the negotiations said.
“We’re still in the discussion phases with Roger and his representatives,” Purpura said. “No news until they tell us we have a deal or don’t have a deal. So there’s really no news. I’m pretty neutral. I think it’s something that we certainly have a compelling situation. I think it would be great for roger and something positive for our ballclub and the city. It’s his decision to make and not ours.”

Clemens Close To Signing With Astros
News Conference Scheduled For 11 A.M.

HOUSTON -- Pitcher Roger Clemens could be reunited with the Houston Astros as early as today, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
Local 2 sports director Randy McIlvoy has learned that negotiations have intensified between the ball club and Clemens' Houston-based agent, Randy Hendricks.
Astros owner Drayton McLane traveled back to his Houston office Wednesday morning where talks have reportedly resumed.
McLane told McIlvoy Tuesday night that he wanted an answer within two days because "timing was critical." The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are also showing interest in 43-year-old Clemens.
The Texas Rangers were told Tuesday night that they were out of the running.
If Clemens signs with the 'Stros, Clemens will make in the neighborhood of $11 million the rest of the season, which breaks down to $3.5 million per month.
An 11 a.m. news conference is scheduled at Minute Maid Park.
The seven-time Cy Young Award winner has 341 career wins and was 13-8 with a major league best 1.87 era last season, helping the Astros reach its first-ever World Series.

Why you rackin that Adel? Is this any different than last year? Did the Yanks, Sox or Gers actually think Rog was going to go to them?
Hell, as a Stros fan, I'm GLAD he is joining the team later rather than earlier. We WILL make the postseason. I can almost guarantee the Stros will bring in someone on trade to roll the dice for this year like we did with Beltran.
