"Breast ironing" -- the use of hard or heated objects or other substances to try to stunt breast growth in girls -- is a traditional practice in West Africa, experts say.

"Breast ironing is an age-old practice in Cameroon, as well as in many other countries in West and Central Africa, including Chad, Togo, Benin, Guinea-Conakry, just to name a few," said Flavien Ndonko, an anthropologist and local representative of German development agency GTZ, which sponsored the survey.

"If society has been silent about it up to now it is because, like other harmful practices done to women such as female genital mutilation, it was thought to be good for the girl," said Ndonko.

"Even the victims themselves thought it was good for them."

Nevertheless, support for and opposition to the tradition remains evenly balanced. According to the survey, 39 percent of women opposed it, while 41 percent expressed support and 26 percent were indifferent.

But you know, according to some of my militantly cultural relativist education professors, we have no right to in any way criticize these practices, since we're just imposing our Western, Eurocentric, heterosexist, racist views on their equally morally valid traditions...

Yeah, but circumcision doesn't normally leave huge painful scars on the crank or stop it from growing, does it?

I've never understood why an all-powerful, omniscient deity would ask for that particular part of the human anatomy as part of a covenant, but hey, if that's what he wants as part of the deal...

..anyway...

...for anyone to claim that the barbaric practices of female genital mutilation (and clitorectomy) and breast ironing are in any way comparable to infant circumcision is disingenuous. Female genital mutilation and breast ironing are misogynistic efforts that deliberately seek to impair the sexual function of women, while the circumcision has neither the intent nor (normally) the effect of impeding the sexual function of the patient. Hell, there are even some advantages (hygenically speaking) in being...errr...a "crew neck" instead of a "turtle neck."

I'm not gonna pretend to understand that one either. I also wonder why He'd give it to us in the first place if He's just gonna ask for it back. Might be some sort of spiritual credit check.
