Remember when you were young
You shone like the sun
Shine on, you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes
Like black holes in the sky
Shine on, you crazy diamond
..
You were caught in the crossfire
Of childhood and stardom
Blown on the steel breeze
Come on you target for faraway laughter
Come on you stranger
You legend, you martyr, and shine
..
You reached for the secret too soon
You cried for the moon / Shine on...
Threatened by shadows at night
And exposed in the light / Shine on...
Well you wore out your welcome
With random precision
Rode on the steel breeze
Come on you raver, you seer of visions
Come on you painter
You piper, you prisoner, and shine
Nobody knows where you are
How near or how far / Shine on...
Pile on many more layers
And I'll be joining you there / Shine on...
And we'll bask in the shadow
Of yesterday's triumph
Sail on the steel breeze
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser
Come on you miner
For truth and delusion and shine

**************************************************
In 1975, during the recording of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" album, Barrett showed up unannounced at the studio -- ironically, during the recording of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," a song about him. He had become overweight and shaved his eyebrows; the other members didn't recognize him at first.
"Wish You Were Here" was dedicated to Barrett.

By the way, which one's Pink?
Its name was derived from two American bluesmen, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council

Syd didn't write this - but Fuck you:
Floyd Fucking rules
Dogs (Waters, Gilmour)
You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need.
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street,
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed.
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight,
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.
And after a while, you can work on points for style.
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake,
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile.
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to,
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in.
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder.
You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you
get older.
And in the end you'll pack up and fly down south,
Hide your head in the sand,
Just another sad old man,
All alone and dying of cancer.
And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown.
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone.
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw
around.
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone,
Dragged down by the stone.
I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused.
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used.
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise.
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this
maze?
Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend.
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And everything's done under the sun,
And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.
Who was born in a house full of pain.
Who was trained not to spit in the fan.
Who was told what to do by the man.
Who was broken by trained personnel.
Who was fitted with collar and chain.
Who was given a pat on the back.
Who was breaking away from the pack.
Who was only a stranger at home.
Who was ground down in the end.
Who was found dead on the phone.
Who was dragged down by the stone.
I'll See some of you at the bottom of the fucking lake

Syd didn't really do much of note re: Pink Floyd, certainly not the PF that most people know.
Nor did he do much after that.
Rack him for managing 32 years of painting and gardening though.

Your contention that most Americans don't know who Syd Barrett was is more an indictment AOR/"Classic rock" radio than a valid criticism of Barrett's work. Barrett released about 4 albums worth of material in his lifetime. All of it is worth listening to.

Yea, they did the Syd Barrett tribute on Rochester's local "classic rock" station too. You want to really impress me? Let me hear it next week and the week after. Meanwhile, the rest of us will get back to memorializing Syd Barrett. In regards to what Bushice was saying about Barrett having "not done much", here's what David Bowie had to say.
Multiply Bowie's sentiment by 1000 or so and you have a rough estimate of how Barrett's work impacted the world of rock music.David Bowie wrote:From David Bowie's website:
"I can't tell you how sad I feel. Syd was a major inspiration for me. The few times I saw him perform in London at UFO and the Marquee clubs during the sixties will forever be etched in my mind. He was so charismatic and such a startlingly original songwriter.
Also, along with Anthony Newley, he was the first guy I'd heard to sing pop or rock with a British accent. His impact on my thinking was enormous. A major regret is that I never got to know him. A diamond indeed." - David Bowie, July 11th 2006

Speaking of tripping, maybe you should try to mix in something about Syd Barrett or Pink Floyd? Christ man, try to keep up here.
So, in that vien, he's a nice little four part article on The Wall. 10 years after Syd freaked out, he was still making waves the the person of a character named Pink, whom he shared with one Roger Waters.

It's an impossible question to answer. Although, since David Gilmour was the one who taught Syd how to play slide guitar, I would have to guess that the spacy slide guitar effects that were the hallmark of tracks like "Echoes" and "A Saucerful of Secrets" would have been present in some form.Mister Bushice wrote:Wonder what the PF floyd that made it big would have sounded like had he been around to be part of it?
Also, one would have to ask wether Gilmour would have been involved in any way shape or form. There was a very brief period where Gilmour and Barrett were simultaneously members of Pink Floyd. And since Gilmour was a friend of Barrett's before Pink Floyd, it is reasonable to assume that he might well have been invited into the group anyway.
That being said, it would have been quite different indeed. But I doubt it would have much sounded like the Cure. But you can be sure it would have included plenty of this...

In the video "Live at Pompei" Gilmour IS playing guitar for Echoes.
Not sure if Syd ever did. I thought Dave was always a "member of the band".
Lastly, I just think Syd and that dude from Cure looked about as wigged out as each other.
Robyn Hitchcock is Sydish, so probably a combo of him and the Floyd sound we know and love.

Echoes was written 3 years after Syd left. That was all Gilmour. But, a primary reason for the hiring of Gilmour was that his style of playing was (in 1968 at least) nearly identical to Barrett's.Tom In VA wrote:In the video "Live at Pompei" Gilmour IS playing guitar for Echoes. I need to listen to some Robyn Hitchcock. Everybody says he was a huge PF and Syd Barrett fan. I'll have to see if I can see the influcences someday.Lastly, I just think Syd and that dude from Cure looked about as wigged out as each other.

So I was tripping on you? That would indicate you were in the vicinity of my ankles. Not what I suggested at all. Speaking of tripping, I saw Pink Floyd live in Madtown in the early 70’s whilst tripping on what was purported to be synthetic psilocybin. I believe it was a pretty neat show.BSmack wrote:FTFY...Goober McTuber wrote:You misspelled “tripping". Badly.
