when will one of them go all in?

Tom, you do understand that before an empire falls it first establishes itself as an empire, which usually means enforcing their dominion over less powerful nations?
You want to talk about hubris? (Or "hubrus", in your world...) Hubris is constantly provoking your much more powerful neighbor and her even more powerful ally, knowing your neck is on the chopping block and the only thing preventing you from getting shithammered is the good will and fraying restraint of the very people you continue to provoke.
Before our empire falls you can be certain that our enemies will first fall much harder and can they or you predict how long it'll be before our empire falls?
I know I can't.
I do know that I can predict their immediate fate, if things keep going the way they're going now.

Valid points. Keep in mind, I'm trying to engage in this discussion with you and in the absence of Marty, trying to see things his way ......Van wrote:Tom, you do understand that before an empire falls it first establishes itself as an empire, which usually means enforcing their dominion over less powerful nations?

It's dark up here and it kind of smells.
Either way, thanks for spelling correction. I'd like to think all our leaders, no matter the aisle, would engage in whatever it took to preserve our life and lifestyles here in the U.S. Be it all out war or detente.
But treaties do have a tendency to draw us into some of the more savage aspects of human nature. We don't seem to abandon our friends, especially when there's money to be made.
With all the horseshit around here, you'd think there'd be a pony somewhere.

WWIII hasn't yet begun, not really.
If and when WWIII ever happens and we happen to be involved in it there'll be no mistaking whether or not "we're all in"...
Right now we (The United States and especially Israel) are obviously dealing only in very measured responses. When it becomes a real war rather than a series of escalating responses the retribution against and destruction of Israel's immediate enemies will be so swift and so complete that those nations will pine for the relative peace and solitude they enjoyed right up until Israel (with our blessing and assistance) decided they'd had enough of these blatant provocations...
If and when we ever again engage in something as important as WWIII you can rest assured we won't concern ourselves with public opinion and the niceties of making sure to target only specific buildings and such.
Nope.
Think Dresden, only with much less slop and much more precision. Considering the helplessness of our enemies Hiroshima will never be necessary.
My personal wish if this were to come to pass would be that we go ahead and finally act like a real empire rather than what we've been doing, which is to be this uniquely benevolent empire that makes things harder on itself than it ought to...
First things first. The middle east's oil is now ours. That's what empires do. They benefit their own society first and foremost and then they let the rest of the world come begging.
In doing so we return the Arab nations of the middle east to whence they came: primitive third world vagrants who'd still be living the backwards life of the bedouin were it not for the largesse of fate that landed them atop large reserves of oil.
Let their princes and sheiks manage without the $145 million palaces, while their culture's women are still treated as nearly useless baggage.
The Arab world needs to face one very hard truth: Whatever successes and luxuries they've enjoyed....they didn't earn 'em. Their culture didn't achieve it. They won the geographical lotto and that's all, and along the way their leadership self indulgently splurges away like a group of myopic Hollywood rich kids.
You want to talk about hubris? There's some serious hubris, living the life of luxury as if you earned it, blind to the fact that the gravy train will soon come to an end and you've done nothing with your excessive means to prepare your culture to be able to compete in a post crude oil world...

I think the answer is NO. The mutual hatred is so entrenched that it will never be resolved.Uncle Fester wrote:Jebus, we're talking a tiny country, half of which is desert, with no oil reserves and a population of about 7 million people. Can't we get along?
