Indonesia didn't relay tsunami warnings

I'm trying to think of something to say about this, but can't come up with anything except... :?

A government minister said Tuesday that Indonesia received warnings from two regional agencies that the powerful undersea earthquake had the potential to trigger a tsunami, but it did not try to pass them on to threatened communities.

Science and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman said Indonesia received the bulletins from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and Japan's Meteorological Agency after the quake, but "we did not announce them."

The warnings were sent about 45 minutes before the tsunami struck.

Even if the government had an attempt to contact the local authorities by phone, radio or e-mail, it's unclear how those warnings would have been passed along to residents or tourists on the beach with no system of sirens or alarms in place.

Coastal residents reported that they did not feel the earthquake.

Haven't heard any updates on whether the American tsunami warning system is working for a crap yet.

I bash Bush as much as anybody, but at least after the Big One a year and a half ago, he inquired about our own system, and was shocked to find out that it was about 85% non-operational, and took measures to get it fixed immediately.

We're about due. Been 306 years since the last major one hit the mainland.

I'm actually sorta hoping for one here. We need to clear away some of the beach front property in La Jolla and Del Mar, and it would definitely be a good thing to clean up PB, OB and IB.

131 people were killed as a result of the earthquake: nine in the earthquake itself, 115 from tsunamis in Alaska, and 16 from tsunamis in Oregon and California. Property damage was estimated at over $300 million ($1.8 billion in 2006 U.S. dollars).

That was an Alaska quake, not a U&L quake. U&Lers don't recoginze Alaska quakes. What are you, some kind of flatlander greenhorn?

U&L geologists don't seem to consider that a "major tsunami" by NW standards.

The tsunami of 1700 was much, MUCH bigger -- it swept the freaking beaches in Japan(which is how we have an accurate historical record of the date).

Plus, I live in Oregon -- anything that victimizes only california tourons, by definition, can not be termed a "catastrophic event." 'Round these parts, we call that "a blessing."

And I hate to break it to you -- if the entire population of Alaska was wiped out, it would take years for anyone to notice, and even then, it would only be greenhorn flatlanders, who finally notice that they can no longer buy sockeye salmon/cat food for $9.99 a pound (can't...stop...laughing-btw)

Coupla big ones...maybe you've heard of Intel? Who is, of course, still in the process of moving HQ to Hillsboro from Santa Clara, like they've been doing for going on ten years now. Anymore, their press releases are from Hillsboro OR, rather than Santa Clara CA. But then again, Intel has always had considerably more dealings in Oregon than cali from the get-go. Laying off 1000 managers soon, or so they tell us...that's gonna kind of suck for the fatcats ladling that gravy all these years.

Good luck forcing people to have some douche pump their gas for them when Alaskan crude goes off the market.

Over the years(not so much anymore), being from where I'm from(could just about hit Nike with a rock from my house), I've rarely been hurting for shoes, and I've rarely paid for them. Not only are there promo pairs to be had, but shoe companies from other places always try and impress everyone here. I've been showered with cheap-or-free New Balance, LA Gear...you name it over the years. Used to get to graze through all of the athlete-tested Adidas before they hit the charities. Used to get Trailblazers unused Avias for $2 a whack.

As far as being "sports-shoe-guy," I can't overstate that I'm the "been there, done that" guy.

And Swooshie makes the best sports shoes. Period. By far the most comfy, and reasonably durable, although Adidas used to make some really heavy leather stuff(more suitable for winter use) that held up really well.

Oh, and btw-Nike owns a bunch of those other shoe companies, and has the parts made in the same places by the same people...without you knowing about it. So save your "Nike sucks, _______ rules" for someone who isn't going to laugh at you about it.

Come to think of it, ever since Adidas and Reebok got busted for cooking the books before their merger, I haven't seen nearly so many of their kicks kicking around for free/cheap as the old days.

Cheaply made? Hell yes.

Suffice it to say that if you buy a pair of shoes and they are so shredded that they won't even serve as lawn mowing sneakers after 120 days, that shoe sucked. Nike may have provided you with many good free samples. To date they have provided me with exactly one piece of shit pair of waffle trainers that couldn't even withstand a half year of moderate use.

Conversely, I've never had a pair of NBs that hasn't lasted over a year. So guess who I roll with?

Intel has always made the vast majority of their components in the US. Mostly in Oregon. Used to live about a block from the biggest plant they have, matter of fact. Probably drive right past it this afternoon. My close friend used to make decent cash setting up the new toolings for the new chipsets. I believe his last job was setting up for the prduction of flash memory.

That's just one plant. I believe there's a total of 4 manufacturing plants in the Hillsboro area, and 3 administrative sites(including the new HQ, which they seem to be moving into at a rate of about one small cardboard box per day for the last few years).

Dude, I'm freaking surrounded by people who make the stuff every day...it's kind of the largest private employer in the state, and has always represented the largest concentration of Intel employees...dumbass.

The original Pentium was invented in Oregon-btw. As was the P2. As was the P3. As was...you get the picture.

Want me to post a pic of the cooling stacks and whatnot coming from the Aloha Campus? Or the Elam Young Campus...I've toured that one, and am pretty familiar with what goes on in there.

And I've certainly never had any friends who have worn monkey-suits for crummy wages there or anything.

I'm not sure which part of "have been moving to Hillsboro for the last few years" you didn't understand.

Every time their stock takes a hit(regular occurance), they suspend moving operations.

Want a picture of the new HQ, too? It's on 216th in Hillsboro, near the intersection of Evergreen Parkway(an industrial road that's home to more than one Intel Campus, very close to the original Elam Young Campus)...bunch of single-story brick office buildings with lots of windows.

And the numbers are constantly changing, but last I heard, there were more Intel employees in Oregon than every other state combined.

But, feel free to continue your esteem-building quest to prove Dinsdale wrong about something...although you might want to pick a topic that I haven't been extremely familiar with for 20+ years...that might be a good start.

Well, my buddy didn't take his Ukranian skank, who is the now-ex-wife of a high-ranking Intel executive.

But, parking at the main boat ramps/parks and whatsuch was a bitch(:bigshocker:), so we were unable to use the closer-to-town put-ins, which would have made it possible to float all the way to my buddy's place, which is across the street from the river...oh, well. We opted to go farther upstream(rack the sober driver), which made parking and accessing the river much easier, but didn't expose us to nearly the throngs of hotties that the sections in the metro-area-proper offer.

The county I live(population ~500,000, plus illegals) in has Intellers numbering in the 5-digits(constantly changing, due to market conditions...10,000 is usually a low number, 15,000 is a high one).
