I guess I qualify as one of those people --
Never been there. Part of me says that any venue that takes a few bucks out of Paul Allen's pocket is OK by me.
But, the bigger part of me says...dude...it's in Washington. Do some meth, wear some cutoffs, and bring your OL so you can beat on her in public.
Have fun in Vantucky/Spuncouver. I would highly suggest getting your hotel across the bridge in a real state.
I've heard traffic getting in and out of there blows goats...be warned...like REALLY blows goats.
Actually, the Edgefield is only a few miles from there...stay there...you'll thank me a thousand times over oif you do. Heck, you could get all crazy and stay until Sunday, when their having a Jerry Garcia birthday party, complete with Tie-Dye Golf Tournament. You'll be there a little too early for BB King's 80th birthday party(unlike Jerry, BB will actually be attending his own birthday party).
The Modest Mouse show there was cancelled...bummer. I'm pissed they had to whack one of the golf holes to build the new amphitheater(at Edgefield), but they sure are getting some big names to play "on the lawn" there...BB King, Modest Mouse(cancelled, reasons unknown), Bonnie Raitt w/Keb Mo...they're bringing it. I can't think of a finer place to see a show than the lawn at Edgefield, the Coolest. Bar. EVAR(all 43 acres of it...plus, they bought the jail next door, which I'm sure will become some weird restaurant/bar thingy).
You should probably take me with you to the show(on you, of course), just to be safe.

I was hoping it wouldn't suck leaving there. fukken hate to miss an encore to beat teats. and noffugin way I'm stayin in WA. fuuuuuuuuuuuk that! I got some scrips for Shilo inns layin around. I'll probably end up at the one by the rose garden ARENA so I'm close to Hawthorne for the grubbin breakfast joints.
I've never stayed at the edgefield, just been there for meetings. beautiful place. heavenly almost. I should kick my own ass for not planning a trip there yet.
I'll look for the dude screaming " I NEED A MIRACLE!!"

Freaking redneck hicks. Not sure how the Shilo by the Rose Garden ARENA (I'll fucking kill you if you fuck that up again...the Rose Garden is a park) is "close to Hawthorne."
On the plus side, scoring rock shouldn't be too big a hassle at that hotel.
Did I mention that Shilo was my first pretty-much-real employer in high school? First job was taking down all of the Christmas lights. Helped build the hotel in the shithole known as Tacoma in high school, too(weekend crew).
Although I suppose at any moment, Mikey will come along and tell me that Shilo Inns isn't based in Beaverton either, and they don't actually offer hotel rooms for rent.
Give the Edge a call (by  -- 503-669-8610...those teetimes don't book themsleves, you know). I believe you can transfer from TriMet(Portland bus) to CTrans(Vantucky bus) somewhere in there. Riding the bus from Wood Village/Troutdale(there's a Shilo out there, too, which puts you closer to the bridge than Inner NE, although you don't get to experience nearly the Negro culture) will be both cheaper and faster than driving across(not to mention that you can get balls-out wasted if you don't drive). They might have a decent room for you...maybe not. A hella lot more fun than staying at a freaking Shilo.
The again, if you dig Hawthorne, just do like I do....bump around the neighborhood until you see a party(usually takes about 30 seconds on Hawthorne), slip through the front door with some brews, get all liquored up, and pass out on ther couch/floor. Might score some nice tail doing that, too.
And yes, the Edgefield is the bomb. Plenty of middle-aged tail to be nailed up in that sucker when you spend the night...plenty...OR SO I'VE HEARD!

that shilo is only a few blocks off hawthorne. I think you may have to go east a few blocks before you cut back south to Hawthidi.
Luther told me that motel was safe , but to not look under the mattresses.
I won't have any time for golf, or to get sucked into edgefield land, on this trip. Them scrips dont use themselves.
nope this is strictly a go see the dan, drink, and crash trip. Back to the desert right after breakfast. maybe a stop at showcase music or somethin really quick.
not nick's though. nick's is off the roster for now
fukken heartburn
never laff when luth tells you to pack some gas x and tums when you visit one of his haunts.
I remember him telling me that and laffing. "haha! poor old guy"
that was dumb
worst heartburn/shits/generally fukked constitution ever
no way I'm lookin under that mattress

Difference in definitions, I guess.
I guess in Drysiderese, "a few blocks" means " a few miles."
Easiest way to get to Hawthorne is to go west a couple of blocks to MLK (don't care what city you're in, if it involves a street named "MLK," it's usually not that cool), then head south a few miles to Hawthorne(where the Hawthorne bridge intersects MLK/McLoughlin/99E, oddly enough). Take a left, and watch for hippies. It's about 1.5-2 miles east on Hawthorne up to "the district." DON'T stop at Dino's Inn for drinks (at about 10th) -- possibly the jankiest tittybar in town. Grab some pizza at the Baghdad Theater(another Mcmenamin's joint), sit on the sidewalk, and watch hotties.
I'd still recommend staying at the Shilo at Wood Village, though, unless you're planning on bumping around the hood after the show. Much easier to get to that part of Vantucky from way out east than it is from close-in NE. Closer to home for you too, for that matter. I'd definitely say take the bus, though. That's what I usually do for events where traffic and parking are going to suck, and I plan on drinking...plus, you don't want to get all boozed up and hang around the 7-11 next to the Shilo in NE...bad for your health....it's summer, and the black folks tend to increase their level of gunfights.
Enjoy.

I'm not the world's biggest fan, but I kind of like the rambling, almost-progressive guitar.
I'll take your word for it. I figured they might be worth a shot, seeing as how they were supposed to play what is now the Coolest. Venue. EVAR.(assuming some drunk golfer doesn't shank one into your dome).

They rock. NO ONE gets chicks squishy in the panties like SuperDiamond...except for the Mighty Neil himself.

Oh, and timmay...there's a Shilo at the airport(imagine that?). I believe CTrans goes to PDX.
Actually, I guess any of those hotels will work. If I remember right, the Amphitheater is near where I-5 and I-205 meet back up in Methfreakland.
Just saw a listing for their shows, matter of fact. Steely Dan, followed the next night by CSN&Y, with Tom Petty the next night. They're pulling in some acts these days.

they did good last year. but seriously. the dudes had been in duckshits river all day and were hanging badly. we moved in for the kill. When the crowd is screaming for your opening band do play and encore, and you are not at the top of your neal copping game. you are toast.
they were toast. left out there like a dead deer rotting on hwy 97 in the summer.
did we play the encore and stuff it to em?
no.
Les Schwad Ampitheater has debinitly been goob to meeb. not about to burn that bridge
ask anyone who was at that show. Iron Band Bend won again.

I'll take your word for it, timmay. Then again, when SuperDiamond rolls into Portland, we don't exactly stuff them into the biggest freaking venue in the region. Probably because we don't have dehydrated brains, nor do we fuck our cousins to escape the "dry heat."
Props on having a cool river though.

Isaac Brock actually moved to Portland to sober up. Doesn't seem to be working.Dinsdale wrote:That was before they moved to Portland and became drunk heroin freaks....that might have something to do with it.
And a Modest Mouse show is always a flip of the coin. Call it in the air, "straight" or "bent."

Moving that couplafew miles to downtown Portland has never done much to promote my sobriety either, so I guess I can't fault him for it.

Never seen them. One of these days, I will. They seem to schedule a show in Portland about every week or two...then cancel it shortly thereafter.

The outgoing traffic does blow at Clark County....I am doing the CSNY show there on the 28th....Doc Watson and Leo Kottke at the Zoo this Friday night.
Pink Martini at the Zoo August 5th...
Merle Haggard on August 16 in Bend, staying over at the Riverhouse for Skynyrd on the 17th...Nugent in Salem in late August .....
(there goes my hearing )
It has been a long time since we have had some good shows and this summer seems to be a good one....

Those cats could schedule shows at any venue for 10 straight nights, and every last ticket would be gone within 5 minutes of going on sale. Learned this last year, when me and a friend tried to hook his mom up with tix.
Hot, hot ticket. Awesome live band. Saw then a couple of years ago, they won't disappoint. A lot of universal appeal there, as is evident from their schedule -- from the Zoo, to the House Of Blues Chicago, to playing with the San Francisco Symphony...a little something for everyone there. Balls-out, ultra-rockin jamfest for old folks.

I suppose if you've been under a rock for the last 20 years, this might be accurate. Otherwise, maybe you haven't been living in the same town I have? I can't remember a summer outdoor season where there hasn't been more good shows than time to see them all.

That was brought up when he was interviewed as to the move, and his explanation was something like "Yeah, but I don't know any of those people." Heh heh. Not to hard to make new friends when you're looking for someone to help you knock back a pint or twelve. And they are most def worth checking out live, but try to catch them indoors, and remember the coin flip should you hear nada but mushmouth. I've seen them probably 20 times - half were excellent (or at least quite good), but the other half were fucking miserable, sending us scurrying for booze in a failed attempt to get as bent as Brock.Dinsdale wrote:Second most bars per capita on the planet, second to Cologne Germany, or so they tell me.Moorese wrote:Isaac Brock actually moved to Portland to sober up. Yeah, I imagine if you're some sort of indie-type star and go bumping in to a bar downtown, it's probably not too difficult to make new friends.

Just have to be connected. I got tickets to see PM at McCready Hall at Pacific University last fall. Acoustical theater, seats 600. Fucking awesome. They did a nice meet and greet afterwards, and I met Chyna Forbes. I am hoping she noticed my boner. That bitch makes singing like oral sex.Did you know someone, or blow someone?

True to some extent. I just decided this summer to go to the show's instead of jonesing and wishing I had, like I have been doing.I suppose if you've been under a rock for the last 20 years, this might be accurate. Otherwise, maybe you haven't been living in the same town I have?
Doing the Oregon State Bluegrass Festival in Winston the last week end in Augest, and I have not been throught the complete county fair gigs in Oregon and Washington either....I have seen some awesome acts for little or no money and a bit of driving.

Not quite the heavy-hitting lineup of the last few years, but in 2 weeks, The Bite rolls around. Used to be $5, probably $8 now. Good music and grossly overpriced grub everywhere.
My absolute favorite of all the foods offered there is the eye-candy.
