The fact that this loose-cannon moronic frat-boy has been engineered into the the presidency is itself a tragic and disgraceful stab in the back to America's principles, prosperity, and profile in the world.

The fact that he's also a startlingly childish and immature character is merely an embarrassment.

The first time I ever heard of the Shocker was on the Jungle and it involved guys getting their rectums fingered by other guys (not that there's anything wrong with that...actually, now that I think about it, that is wrong. Very, very wrong.) I didn't actually know about the female variant until later.

It's simple. I said your sad ass couldn't get pledged to a fraternity even if you offered the fellas booze, drugs, money and your virgin sister in an attempt to bribe your way in.

I'm sorry...when I think "long national nightmare", the President teasing the German Chancellor just isn't what comes to mind. I can't even imagine getting excited if it'd been Bubba doing that to her instead of Dubya. I'd laugh about it and that'd be it. (Of course, Bubba preferred to grab the other end, but I digress...)

The vast majority of Americans have never belonged to a greek letter society of any kind. In fact, I can't think of a single college that has a greek membership rate of more than 50%. Does such a place exist?

True. And it's no shame in and of itself not to have joined. I am, in fact, the progeny of a long line of independents who were and are, nevertheless, the salt of the earth. But we're not talking about delightful people who would have made delightful fraternity and sorority members, but for whatever reason, never had the opportunity, or chose not to when they did. We're talking about individuals so utterly without redeeming virtue that they couldn't buy their way in with copious quantities of money, alcohol, drugs and tang. We're talking, in short, about people like LTS TRN 2.

And in any case, I'm not the one who started the frat-boy smack, now am I? LTS TRN 2 assumed the position, so I started swinging the paddle.

(By the way, Nick, if you're going to remain in that crouch, grabbing your ankles, with your tighty-whitie-...okay, baggy-grayish-yellow-with-a-large-splotch-of-brownie...-covered ass pointed uprange at me and my paddle, the proper response every time I smack you is "Thank you, sir. May I have another?" And be grateful. It could be worse. I joined a fraternity where the male Shocker would have been considered a filthy, disgusting, depraved act. Not all of them do.)

I for one, find the phrase "frat boy" used as a pejorative to be offensive. It paints with an astoundingly ignorant and broad brush.

They had a chapter in Geneseo. And a huge house on University Drive. And the biggest fucking bong I have EVER seen in my life. I swear this thing was so huge it had to be bolted to the table it was sitting on and you needed two people to properly operate the damn thing unless you happened to be sporting Dwayne Wade's wingspan.

Along those lines, I can honestly say that there are no fraternities at Notre Dame. Never have been, and unless something unforeseeable happens in the future, there never will be.

The Sig Eps in Geneseo are no more. They pissed of the college with some of their alcohol & violence-related antics, then they pissed off their national and got their charter yanked. As soon as they pissed off their alumni with the same idiocy, they died off. They epitomized the negative stereotype of greekdom and therefore didn't deserve to exist. Good riddance.

My Fratenity, OTOH, has prospered in Geneseo since expelling the tie-dyed, patchouli-doused, Deadheads. The undergrads do easily 10x the community service we ever did in the 80's - camping out around the "Greek Tree" for a week in the middle of winter to raise $$ for cancer research, using Spring Break to build homes with Habitat for Humanity, doing scads of walkathons, etc. They've won "Greek Organization of the Year" repeatedly. Sure as hell a long way from the group that sponsored madcap bongathons...

As someone who sees this stuff routinely here at Geneseo and who has both seen and gotten secondhand accounts of similar stuff from college administrators when I served as a National Officer for Alpha Chi Rho, I think I have a good reason to easily dismiss the uninformed opinions that paint fraternity membership as primarily thuggish behavior.

I, for one, and damned proud of being an Alpha Chi Rho and want my sons to follow in my footsteps.

DK's have always had monolithic support from their alumni. Come hell or high water or gang-rape charges, their alumni (including high-powered lawyers and businessmen with deep pockets) always show up to bail them out, arrange a good plea bargain, and buy them a new house when the village condemns their old one.

My younger brother went to Geneseo and got in pretty tight with the DK's as a freshman. They started putting major pressure on him to pledge, then some of their more, how shall I say, unsavory, goings-on came to his attention. He cut the ties with them real quick after that.

I think we left out killing local cats as a part of pledging. Can we assume he wasn't down with that either?

DKs were a sick bunch of fucks. The amazing thing is that they were none too shy about advertising their intentions.

But, having a DK alumn as a Geneseo town judge didn't hurt.

I didn't know about that. I once had a conversation with the Newark village justice (this was back in my Wayne County days) who rather proudly advertised himself during this conversation as a DK alum. In one of my less discreet moments, I happened to mention my brother's experience with the DK's. He didn't seem too happy about it being brought up, but he wasn't exactly in a hurry to refute anything I said, either.

Point of information - although they have been proven a bunch of gangraping thugs who are also incapable of a fair one-on-one fight, they do not kill cats.

Skeeter, who was the DKT vice president during the alleged incident (which has now achieved mythic status) set me straight about it:

- The DK's had apparently decided to "give the business" to a good guy who had depledged them for academic reasons and then came back to pledge the following semester. The DK's found a roadkill cat on Court St. in front of their house, strung it up in a closet, and forced the guy to spend quality time in the closet with the fermenting feline corpse.

So...they didn't actually kill it and don't kill cats as part of their pledging.

I have no reason to doubt Skeeter, since he got tossed from the DK's for being basically unwilling to go along with the thuggery and he wound up pledging AXP and becoming my Brother. Our National doesn't recognize local greeks and will take their former members of locals as long as they've proven that they've fully renounced all ties/loyalty to the local.

DK's were sick bastards.

Phigs (Phi Sigma Epsilon) were also sick, from a partying aspect. They drank out of frying pans..which is harder than it sounds. Good musicians.

I was in a fraternity. They're OK until you turn 21 when you no longer have to act like a jackass in order to socialize with alcohol.

If the drinking age in college campuses was 18, there would be no need for fraternities. I know I know, we've got a bunch of "dry" fraternities these days. Those fraterities are either guilty of false advertising or if they really are dry, they aren't really fraternities, they're just a bed and breakfast.

And horror of horrors, if they are a dry fraternity and still act like frat guys, then I don't know any school that wold want guys like that anywhere near their campus. The things that went down in my fraternity . . . I shiver to think of anyone would would even think about doing them while sober.

Actually, I got a lot out of the experience as an undergrad (for us it wasn't just about drinking), even going to the leadership conclaves and conventions. Went on to serve as Grad Chapter President and serve on several National Committees before getting named National Ritual Officer. Got to travel all over the eastern states (our Chapters only go as far south as North Carolina) and into the midwest. Did the National Officer thing for three years before the every-other-month trips to Neptune , NJ for Council meetings finally wore me out. Met a lot of good people. Still meeting more as time rolls on.

There's a lot of people for whom the greek experience was nothing more than a few years of boozing and good times, and that's OK for them. But there's also a bunch of us who put a lot in and got a whole lot more out.
