there are a few kinds of colorblindness--the most
common being "red/green" (not that lame comedy)
it is an X-linked trait and therefore mathematically
more common in men-- people with it say they can
spot wild game when hunting better than folks with
normal color vision--possibly why the allele remained
in the human population for so long.

Gee, and every time I go to the DMV, I'm told that if you can't pass the vision test including the one where you have to differentiate between red and green, you don't get a license in the first place.
Dins, Dins, Dins.

You really should know better than this. Different states have different laws regarding licensing of drivers. I'll certainly take your word that a person having red-green colorblindness can't get a license in the U&L. That's not universal, however.

New York's vision test form: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/mv619.pdf

Note that it says nothing about colorblindness.

So, in a state where they have inverted traffic lights, they also give licenses to colorblind people?

But they're red on guns because it's dangerous?

Ponderous.

No Dins, we just have a very warped sense of humor. Slow speed fenderbenders are good for a chuckle, epecially if you get a couple of old codgers (sup Wolfman & Luth) who decide to "go at it" in the middle of the street.

We're crazy to live in NY, tell me you knew.

I don't have red/green colorblindness, but I've thought myself for some time that I probably have a different kind of colorblindness.

Blue gives me lots of problems. Depending on the shade, it can look green, gray, purple or black to me.

Anyplace else, it's only illegal if you don't succeed.

Exactly. But anyplace else, if a doctor put a button in your hand to release deadly doses of goo, he's going to jail.

But here, you can't drive if you can't tell the difference between red and green. I'm pretty sure that's still the case, anyway. I've had my license for quite some time now, and apparently not enough people have called the DMV complaining about my driving to warrant them calling me in for an eye test(fairly new law, and 99% of the people called in are over 65).
