AL Cy Young a/o Rookie of the Year

AL Cy Young a/o Rookie of the Year
Who is your current pick in the AL?
Liriano or Papelbon?
Both have sick stats.
Liriano is 12-2 with a 1.93 ERA (League Leading), 125 K after 107 IP.
Papelbon has 29 Saves (League Leading), is 2-1 with a 0.53 ERA (Holy Sh*t!!) after 51 IP, He has 52 Ks.
A case can be made for either.... What's your call??

Papelbon is very Gagne-esque in the way he got started. His ERA is very impressive but the most important stat for a closer is saves and save conversion percentage/efficiency...or blowing the least number of saves. 3 blown saves in 32 opportunities...strong percentage but most of the leaders in the saves in the AL in the 2-3 blown saves range. Look at Jenks, he's got only one blown save and this is his first full year in the majors...he's not rookie eligible though. If Papelbon finishes with 40-50 saves and doesn't blow more than a handful, that should keep him in the hunt. If I was to pick the top closer in the AL right now, I probably would take Papelbon but he's not blowing the field away. He's very efficient right now which is the most important thing about being a quality closer.
With Liriano, he's got 12 wins and he's only been a starter since May 19. He'd probably have 15 wins already had he been in the rotation from the beginning of the season. I think it's harder for a rookie to be a quality starter right away as opposed to being a closer simply because of the work load. We'll see how Liriano is into September and if he's still under 2.00 ERA and has only a handful of losses...I don't know how you don't pick him over Papelbon. The thing Liriano has over most starters is the fact he's only throw 107 innings right now when workhorses like Schilling and Halladay are at or around 150 innings so far. Liriano's stats...to compare him to another player...are very Pedro-esque. He's got the low 2.00 or under 2 ERA, a WHIP around or under 1.00, a very gaudy K/BB ratio.
It's fun debate to have right now but considering both of these guys are on teams in the middle of pennant races, I'd like to see how they continue to perform when the pressure is on them. I don't know if either guy will win both awards in the end at this point. Papelbon could put some distance between him and the other closers in terms of saves and ERA but with Liriano, he's probably going to be in a large group who will be in the 15-20 win range. I think if the Twins make the postseason after the way they started the season...they really didn't turn it on until he joined the rotation...he's got to get just as much attention as Papelbon in the end.

JV could win 17 or 18 games and still not win. As long as Liriano is hovering around 2.00 ERA, keeps up that torrid K/BB ratio and continues to win and Papelbon keeps converting saves and not allowing runs...Verlander might finish the year 19-6 (projected by ESPN) and finish third. In this rookie class, finishing third isn't that bad of an accomplishment. He goes about his business with a little less flare although he's able to throw 100 but has low strikeout numbers. I'd love to see him along with Bonderman step forward down the stretch if Rogers starts to tank. I'd put those two in the postseason three-man rotation at this point.

Neither.
By the end of the season, Dream Weaver will be the ROY.
The kid is absolutely dealing filth in every start thus far. Not only is he undefeated at 7-0, he posesses something none of these other canidates do: Simple domination over batters. Period.
If Weaver wasnt smacking the fuck out of everyone so thouroughly, i'd go with Liriano.

Verlander has started since day 1. He throws 100 mph in the 9th inning. I'd say that dominates.

If he has no placement with it, it doesnt dominate.WolverineSteve wrote:He throws 100 mph in the 9th inning. I'd say that dominates.
Weaver: 7-0, 1.15 ERA, 47 Innings pitched, 40 strikeouts
That is fucking domination, pure and simple.
These numbers, while very good, are not close to Weaver.:
Verlander: 12-4, 2.77 ERA (more than DOUBLE of Weaver's), 123.2 innnings pitched, 80 strikeouts
Feel free to shut the fuck up and eject, Tiger tard.

His "Cup of coffee" includes getting us back into first place while smashing division rivals. Dumbfuck.
You obviously have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.
Plus he is related to Jeff.
As if your blatant idiocy wasnt proven already, this statement alone flat out cements your tard status. Congrats.
Instead of opening up your cocksucker and wasting everyones time with your useless shit posts, you might want to actually witness the players being mentioned in this discussion first.
Just a thought.

Bringing the "tough NFL forum talk" huh? It doesn't impress me.
If you think a guy who's been up and down (that's from the bigs to the minors, junior) and not pitched the entire season will win the CY, you are fucking high. As for the ROY, it's a rich class. I think a guy who MADE THE TEAM, coming out of spring training will have a decided edge.
Don't go hiding when Weaver hits his wall. I'll be here in a couple months when all is said and done. Verlander and Papplebon and maybe Liriano will still be playing. If you don't think players on the best teams don't garner more votes because of it, you're a bigger idiot than anyone in here ever thought. Stick to the masquarade ball you call football, in that shithole stadium of yours.

Lets take another flamethrower who actually had control of a 95-100mph fastball through the 9th.......Randy Johnson. His normal Strikeout numbers easily triple Verlanders.....why do you think that is-especially when both men throw the same mph of heat?
Light coming on yet, dipfuck?
Then again, does anyone expect Tiger Fucknozzle to know, let alone watch baseball yearly? Didnt think so. We understand steve......your team is actually decent and watchable after 15-20 years of sucktitude-which included going for the record of all time losses recently (buwahahahaha) so you want to suck thier dick and swallow thier greatness inccessantly.
Not acting like a clueless assbag is a good start, bitch.

Yeah, Verlander sucks.
You are a fucking moron. Learn the game. Get the silver paint out of your eyes. He's a rookie. That is what the discussion was about. He was in double-A last year. His strikeoutes are improving. Over his last 8 starts (practically Weaver's entire resume) his K's are up and he gave up his first HR in 52 innings today. How many does Weaver have again?
Verlander's line today...
Innings 6.2
Hits 5
runs 1
K's 8
ERA 2.69
Yep he doesn't belong in the conversation.
Just because the Tigers have sucked doesn't mean I don't know baseball. Following your logic you would be a NFL moron. I've forgotten more baseball than you'll ever know.
Learn the game.

Damn you're stupid. Bandwagon fans tend to follow all winning teams(see Anaheim Angels a couple years back), I know this may come as a surprise to you. See when teams have losing records 12 years in a row, attendance suffers (unless you reside in the North side of Chicago). When the team is winning at a historic clip, some old bitter baseball fans re-emerge. Now take your schmecky out of your rally monkey and pay attention.Raydah James wrote:WolverineSteve wrote:And I'm the one homeringRaydah James wrote:

This is not me however. I've never wavered in any of my allegiances. My attendance to sporting events of my teams speaks for itself.
Verlander is now 13-4 tied for the league lead in w's. If you get out your daddy's baseball encyclopedia I'll introduce you to some other impressive stats, such as WHIP, Opponents BAA, P/IP, K/BB. All of which will support Verlander's case against Weaver Come Lately.
When you learn what you're talking about come back and try to talk baseball with the adults. Run along now skippy. You've been worked.
Amazing AL rookie class this year.
Unless things change dramatically, Liriano seems like automatic.
I'm not one to heap ROY praise on someone with an accomplished career in another country. If I was, I'd be giving mad ROY props to Jenji Jojima, as well. What a freaking badass he is.

Nope.
Typical reaction when one has been run by facts. Face it, your arguement was watered down at best.
I provide factual statistics showing what a boob you are.

Sorry for expecting a cement head to stay on topic.
You're an Oakland fan in football, must've bandwagoned the Angels when they were good that year. Stick to quiche CaliBoy.

Re: AL Cy Young a/o Rookie of the Year
Verlander and Weaver deserve to be thrown in the mix but Weaver has to get many more opportunities to get within sniffing distance of Liriano.
Verland 13-4 with a 2.69 ERA, 88 Ks in 130 IP is impressive but I'll take Liriano.
Weaver has only pitched 47 innings... not enough experience to compare. Yes, He is on an incredible pace but Liriano gets the nod

Weaver has 5 wins against KC (twice) , Tampa, Cleveland and Baltimore. The other 2 are against Seattle and Oakland.
6 wins against the 5 worst teams in the AL. 1 win against a team that is barely above .500.
Come back and suck his cock when he has 7 wins against teams that aren't a combined 70 games under .500

I should have clarified for the west coasters...A convincing arguement..you know, one that refutes mine. Since you cannot...you've been run.
Good night.
Good night.

Yes, goodnight Steve.Good night.
Come tommorrow, your alleged brain is going to be fucking pissed at you for hitting submit on this fine Wednesday.
Of course, this would entail your limited grey matter in that vast empty rental space of a head being able to wrap itself around the fact that you repeately and thoroughly kicked your own ass.

^^This post provided some statistical evidenceWolverineSteve wrote:Yeah, Verlander sucks.
Later I offered to show you more stats...provided you knew what they were, in the interest of time and all. You responded with colorful depictions of homosexual acts, the like of which I can only hope to never be able to conjur up, as well a self-proclaimed victory (nobody but you bought it).
Let's sum it up...staying on topic.
Liriano is the leader by a nose thusfar.
Papplebon is impressive as he's done all he has under the microscope of the Boston media and fans.
Verlander is right there. He has been solid all year long.
Weaver has impressed, but not enough under his belt to warrant consideration in this unreal class of rookie pitchers.
All in good fun Jimmers
That the AL ROY will be either Liriano or Papelbon. But that would never back him down from a good trolljob...Rack Fu wrote:so what the fuck does he know?

Big Papi serves Jered Weaver a cup of Coffee and a DONUT!!WolverineSteve wrote:Arguably the ace of the best staff in baseball...solid credentials. We'll see where Weavers stats are when he's been up for more than a cup of coffee. Plus he is related to Jeff.
edit to add....What in Verlander's stats show that he has no placement?. Learn the game fuckstick.
Ortiz drove in four runs, helping the Red Sox rally to spoil Angels rookie Jered Weaver's attempt to become the first pitcher in 25 years to win his first eight major league starts.
(another winning hit for Mr. Clutch!)
