I have come to appreciate the start of the school year much more, now that I have a 7-year-old that, by the end of July, whines about being bored despite the swimming lessons, piano lessons, soccer camp, 2x a week local soccer league, playdates, etc. we have for him. Oh, and since I'm the parent that's "on vacation," I'm the one who has to cart the kid everywhere and deftly shift mental gears to also deal with the demands of a 2-year-old heavily into his "terrible twos" stage (save the "cherish these moments" rap...).

And hey, you remember how it was to really, REALLY dig teaching a subject you love to kids eager to learn it (even if they aren't keen on reading, homework, etc.). I'm finally getting to teach AP Bio on a full-year schedule, getting to teach an elective of my own creation (on infectious diseases) that's already full-up registration-wise, and have been given a really cool administrator as my supervisor. I love what I do and actually miss the classroom and the kids, even if I do realize that recharging the batteries mentally is necessary.
