Never had a migraine, thank God. I've got allergies that wreak havoc on my sinuses, and changes in barometric pressure and humidity make me feel like my head is in a vice, but I've been assured that those issues are NOTHING when compared to a real migraine.

Apparently in a recent visit to the doctor, my mother was told by the doctor that she has the "worst case of migraine headaches he has ever seen in his 30 year career".

I'm very fortunate this hasn't been passed down onto me. I've never had one. In fact, I can count on one hand how many headaches I've had in my entire life.

I've been all over e-bay of late, both buying and selling.

The Gibson Les Paul Standard in Heritage Cherry Sunburst is a new '06. I got it from a dealer in western Pennsylvania. It wasn't a wall hanger, it's new in a box.

They go for $2300 online and I got that one for $1700.

The Gibson ES335 DOT Reissue in Antique Burst is a same-as-new condition '03 model. Some drummer in Florida bought it for his daughter, who played it once, for about an hour. She then changed directions on him and decided she wanted to be a model and not a musician. The guitar sat in its case ever since.

That was the guy's story and after talking to him for awhile I believed him and bought the guitar. Looking at the guitar now sitting next to me here, I definitely believe him. It's brand new. It's literally flawless. In fact, it's in better condition than most new ones sitting in a store.

They go for $2600 online and I got it for $1600.

Other than throwing some new strings on 'em I set up the intonation, truss rods and bridges and then I slapped some Dunlop strap locks on each of 'em and that's it, they're done. The fretwork is nice and there's none of the poor fit and finish issues so prevalent in so many recent Gibsons. The fretwork is clean and even, there's no stain creeping up on to the fretboard or the nut, the nuts are cleanly cut and the electronics are all clear, solid and glitch free.

No scratches at all, on either guitar.

I hope to have them the rest of my life but if I ever decide to sell them, no matter how far down the road that might be, I know I won't lose a dime on either one of 'em.

I had the lady take the LP out of the box so that I could see the maple top's grain and finish.













Unlike a lot of LP Standards in HCS I wanted the red burst edges to be more red and less rootbeer, and I wanted the burst to extend fairly deep into the middle of the guitar. I wasn't too concerned about the degree of flaming in the maple, I just wanted there to at least be a decent amount.

This one covered my bases. It's exactly what I wanted. I wanted the LP Standard because I wanted the Burstbucker Pros, with the potted Alnico Vs and the nickel covers. I didn't want the unpotted Burstbuckers that come in the Class 5 or Supreme and I definitely didn't want the uncovered 496s, 498s and 500Ts that come in the Studio and Classic.

The Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish is just how I think an LP should look. It's the classic LP Look, to me, and I've coveted that exact guitar my entire life.

It's not like I even need an LP Standard either. My CT6M with the DiMarzio Breeds and the coil splitters will do everything this LP will do, and a whole lot more, and it plays so much easier over the entire neck...

Doesn't matter though. I've always wanted an LP Standard in HCS.


As for the ES335, well, for clean and slightly overdriven blues tones the ES335 is the best sounding 'buckers equipped guitar ever built, as far as I'm concerned. They also play like a motherfucker, which many people don't seem to realize when they dismiss 'em as merely being "my father's guitar".

Awesome necks, very slim, super fast, with the lowest action I've sampled. Lower even than my Ibanez JEM7VWH...

Just play some clean blues on the neck p/up of an ES335 (with either vintage PAFs or my personal favorite p/ups, the Classic 57s that come on these newer versions) and the reasons behind the enduring love for that guitar will instantly become crystal clear...









I was torn between this Antique Burst, Ebony, Transparent Brown and Beale Street Blue but when this one popped up and I was able to talk the guy down to $1600 I had to grab it. I would've been happy with any of those other colors too but I'm good with this one as well plus it has an usual amount of flame for an ES335.

People are buying Ibenez guitars for less than the cost of shipping, and they think they're getting the real deal?? WTF??

Ever think to simply get the serial # from the seller and then check it with Ibanez before you make the deal?? Christ, how stupid could someone be??

Couldn't the seller simply go to a local store and snag a few from the display guitars?

Yes, he could, but if you request a picture of the headstock or input jack (wherever the serial # is located on a given guitar) of the guitar you're buying from him he can't claim that he didn't know the guitar he sold you was a fraud.

Just make sure you get a pic that clearly shows the whole guitar, including a close up of the serial # on the guitar.

Either the serial # he provided you matched the guitar he sold you, or it didn't. As long as you have the serial # beforehand you can expose both types of fraud, whether it be a counterfeit guitar or a bait and switch sale. If it's a counterfeit guitar you simply inform of the fact before you buy the guitar...

"Dude, I ran the serial # by Ibanez. They say your serial # is not an Ibanez guitar."

or...

"Dude, this guitar you sent me isn't the same one I agreed to buy. The serial #'s don't match."

Either way, the guy isn't going to bother trying to sell you his guitar if it's a fraud.

Thoughts on Fenders? Own any?

Currently I have two Fender amps (a '65 Twin Reverb and a '65 Deluxe Reverb) and I've had a few others before these two. As for their guitars I have a few custom Strats. One's an all mahogany H-S-H "Super Strat", one's a full on vintage hardtail Strat and one's a customized Jeff Beck Strat.

I've had a bunch of other Strats as well. Strats are the only Fender guitars I've ever owned. I've almost gone the Tele route a few times but for whatever reason I've just never pulled the trigger on one yet.

Basically, yeah, I love Fender. I'd have a very tough time choosing between Strats and traditional 'buckers equipped rock and blues/jazz guitars but if I were forced to choose just one style and live with that one style for the rest of my life I suspect I'd probably go with a Strat and a Twin Reverb...
