It's not me.

Looks more like a Zyclone happy hour. He probably jumped in his Lear Jet and hit Ruth's Chris in Indy for some drinks and butter fried filet appetizers. I'm pretty sure he got a picture of himself next to his male waitress just before dropping the big $4.00 tip. I'm sure Vince Vaughn in "Swingers" giving the midnight waitress at the casino the 50 cent piece for fetching a couple scoth on the rocks was his inspiration. And per usual, I'm sure he spent the night tweezing little Zy.

Hit a few random pages on that site and saw Jennifer Lopez come up about four times. Apparently she likes to go out with her friends and pack on about 12 extra pounds while complaining that the drinks are too cold, the bubble count is wrong, and then humiliate the server while leaving a couple of bucks in small change and laughing her fat ass off.

How come this doesn't surprise me, "Jenny on the Block"?

I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.

I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's fucked up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college bullshit I got two words for that: learn to fuckin' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big fuckin' surprise.

When the wife was on her externship she worked at the Ritz Carlton's Grill here in town. She made 7 bucks an hour and the waiters drove beamers. The only thing they were good at was "More water, Mr. Stephanapolous?" and got paid like crazy.

"insult tip"---- a penny face down--
and both times they were well
"earned" !!!
I typically tip from 20-25%.
It is said that people who worked as servers
and bartenders are the best tippers

15% for passable service
20% for really good service
25% for exceptional service

Yes, I used to be a waiter and a bartender and had my fill of lousy tippers. The worst were groups of four retired couples, each with one of those two-for-one coupons. They always demanded the maximum service, 5 coffee refills, and would tip 10% or so of their final bill, not the actual value of the meals they were served. As a barkeep the worst were some of the "regular" customers who would sit at the bar for hours expecting to be chatted up and leave a $.50 tip. Of course they don't need to leave a large tip -- you're their buddy, right? :meds:

A few things I usually consider:

- Most waitpersons don't make all that much money. A couple of extra bucks is going to make a lot more difference to them than it is to you. If you like the person and they gave good service, why not make their day?

- A waiter at an expensive restaurant has to work harder for a large percentage than one at a less expensive place. That's because 20% of $150 is a lot more than 20% of $40, and the waiter at an expensive place (especially a busy one) is probably making pretty good $$. One other thing you have to consider, though, is at a high end place that tip is probably being shared with at least two other people who were involved in your service (buspeople, bartenders, etc.)

30% is an INSANELY good tip. 20% is more than adequate for good service. And average service rates the old double the sales tax math.

Mikey,

What's your take on tips for bartenders? I've always been against the "$1/drink" tip. I prefer to open a tab and pay 20% at the end of the evening, more if the pours were heavy. Nothing gets me more pissed at a bartender who measures shots in a shot glass or jigger. Yeah, they are probably "required" to. When I see that, I tend to frequent those places less.

I've only stiffed a person once. We were seated for 15 minutes before the waitress even came to our table for drink orders. No one ordered alcohol so the only time we got her attention for refills was when we asked the guy who brought our food to us to send the waitress over. The only other time we saw her besides taking the drink order, delivering drinks and coming back for requested service was when she brought the bill with a smile telling us how lovely it was to "serve" us.

I paid with credit card (which took another 10-15 minutes). Put the line through the tip area. Total was the subtotal before tip. Signed my name and put under that "You have a long way to go before you'll ever EARN a tip with that kind of service."

On average, I'm a 20-25% tipper on decent service. Service like described above just pisses me off.

It all depends. I prefer to run a tab and tip at the end, especially if there's a group of people. If I'm sitting at the bar and paying for individual drinks for myself, I usually tip really high on the first couple of rounds and maybe taper off. You often get better attention that way and any bartender will know that you're not likely to keep tipping high all night, but appreciates that you're taking care of him. If I'm at a wedding reception or other function that has an open bar I'll often put a 5 or 10 spot in the bartender's tip jar with my first drink. IMO, people that drink for free and don't tip the service are the worst kind of cheapskate.

Minimum tip...20%.

As for tipping in bars...here's the deal. Order first cocktail, pay cash, tip 10 or 20 bucks. Next round, start a tab. The bartender will put you on the "payroll". This is the small list of preferred clientelle that will recieve a tab showing less than half of the drinks consumed. When the bartender shows me "tab love" the tip is usually about 100%. Adding this to the reduced bill comes out to less than the tab would be if all drinks were charged for plus a good tip. Once you've established this relationship with the bartender you will get preferred treatment no matter how busy the bar is. Bottom line...the initial 10-20 dollar investment will repay you for as long as you choose to do business with that particular bartender, the good ones share the info with their co-workers, you'll never wait long for service.

Tipper's Name: Broke Bastard
Where it happened: Green Bay, WI
Total bill / Tip amount / Percentage: $40.00 / $0.00 / 0%
What happened:
After meeting this guy's every need and special request in a timely manner, I thought things were going pretty well. When I brought the bill, the guy gave his credit card and asked if I could put extra on there. I explained that when the charge receipt printed, there would be room for him to add a gratuity before he signed it. He was happy. Not being a pushy server, I planned on retrieving the signed charge slip after the party had left. About 5 minutes later, however, the guy approached me and handed the slip to me. I glanced at it and saw that he had written $15.00 on the tip line. At first I was amazed. Then the guy asked to get that back in all fives. At first I refused, then when he wanted to talk to the manager, I gave in and gave the cash. He mentioned he was on his way to the ice cream shop right next door, but headed back to his table to get his coat. After he exited the building, I went to go clean the table, and there was no tip! The bastard used me as an ATM instead of having to pay the surcharge at the real ATM. Next time that silly puppy comes in to eat, I might accidentally get his order screwed up big time. Thanks, ass.
