Does anyone really care about GOLF enough to watch it?
Football season approaches, and all everyone is talking about is GOLF. WTF...why?
"but Tiger Woods is great"
"but they're just so good"
"but Daly is a character"
Spare me. I don't play golf. I can see that it must be fun to play...but why, pray tell, would you watch GOLF? I've painted walls and watched them dry thrillingly...an experience surely not to be surpassed by spectator GOLF.
I suppose that they could stage competitive Nail Clipping, and some of you rubes would eat it up...

Speaking as someone who watches 20+ tournaments a year, watches Golf Central at least twice a week and who has been to 6 different professional tournaments as a spectator, I can say that if you don't play golf, you'll never understand why anyone would watch golf.
But if you play golf and enjoy the challenge of matching yourself against good courses, the next best thing to playing is watching the best players in the wolrd challenge great layouts.

Back in my bartending days...one afternoon, some geezers rolled in in that silly "golf uniform"...and asked that I turn on the Skins game. I turned on the Redskins, as they battled a divisional rival. They screamed in protest..."SKINS IS GOLF, ASSHOLE." So, I turned on their game, and everyone else in the bar groaned.
How can you watch GOLF when there is any football game on - any game whatsoever? There's just something wrong about that.

BTW, what poor barkeep had to preside over you and Fatsak?
Running off to the bathroom every 5 minutes to insert another plastic toy into your calloused colons?
Dropping feces-encrusted action figures into beer steins?
Leaving upper-deckers in poorly lit corners of the bar?
Spraying half-chewed pork rinds as you bellow for more domestic Swill Lite?

Golfers run plenty of smack at each other. It's just a little bit more evolved than the "yo mamma" smack that the average professional athlete engages in. Same goes for the fans.Doug near DC wrote:I'll watch golf, when they allow the players to run smack at each other.

Trying to get Dinsdale (edit: damnit dins) out of the woodwork on a slow Monday afternoon, eh?
I'll play along, at least. These are the requirements that must be in place before I will even consider watching golf on TV:
1) It must be a major
2) It must be the last round
3) Preferrably the last five holes
4) I must have NOTHING else to do
5) The internet/T1B must be down
But yeah, you tend to watch things you actually do. I'll probably take some heat for this, but I used to be a pretty competitive ping pong/table tennis player, and anytime it comes on Fox Sports, or whatever, I'll take some timeout to watch. It's amazing what those crazy Chinks and obscure Eastern European and Scandinavian civilians can do.
Now...where I'm in total agreement with you is the absolute LOSERS who expropriate this shit OVER a college football game, or ANY game that involves a football, a baseball, a basketball, or a puck. How the fuck could anyone watch the Borden Chocolate Milk Invitational over Michigan/Ohio St? Suffice it to say, I don't "get it," and probably never will.

One day your grandkids will say that grandpappy over there got to see Tiger Woods in his prime dominate. Not too often an athlete transends his sport. Lew Alcindor in college hoops, Chamberlain in the NBA, Tiger in golf. When they have to change the rules just because of 1 athlete....that doesn't happen too often. Tiger hasn't changed rules (yet) but he has changed a few courses......Not sure you need to do something in order to enjoy watching it......Goober likes porn but never gets any........

I dunno, there's just something about "one-on-one" sports that aren't that interesting...or I should say aren't as interesting.
You might find my take on this in another thread where Rack Fu had his FBI-issued glock resting on the keyboard as he was typing.

Like BS said, if you don't play it, you can't appreciate it. If you knew how fucking hard it was to play golf, you sit in amazement watching a player get hot and pile up birdie after birdie after birdie on some of the most challenging courses man has built.
In addition, with golf, you can put yourself in the player's shoes any given weekend. You just can't do that with football or baseball or basketball.
Now, I will watch just about any CFB game over golf. I'll watch golf over just about any NFL game that isn't the playoffs.
So if I rank'em...
1. CFB (reg or playoffs)
2. MLB (reg or playoffs)
3. NFL Playoffs
4. Golf (any tourney)
5. NFL Reg Season
6. College Basketball
7. Hockey
8. College Baseball
9. Flies Fucking
10. jtr standing in corner
11. NBA

PSU,
You obviously have never played golf or dont enjoy playing golf. I am not very good at it but I still love to play it. I might watch a normal tournament on a Final Round Sunday if Tiger, Phil or Els is in contention, but if it is a major I am glued to the TV for 4 days. if Tiger is in the hunt you bet I am going to watch him play. He is re-writing history and I want to be able to say 25-30 years from now that I had the pleasure watching him make the hard game of golf look soo easy.
1 CFB
2 Pro Football
3 Golf Majors
4 College Basketball
5 MLB
6 NBA

Sorry, but I can't agree with this. You don't have to play golf, at least not on a regular basis, to realize it's a difficult game. And conversely, merely appreciating the difficulty of the game doesn't necessarily translate into wanting to watch it, at least not in my case. I also realize that chess is extremely difficult, at least to play on the level of a grandmaster. But that doesn't mean that I'll spend hours watching a chess match between grandmasters, either.IndyFrisco wrote:If you knew how fucking hard it was to play golf, you sit in amazement watching a player get hot and pile up birdie after birdie after birdie on some of the most challenging courses man has built.

I'll grant you that order is somewhat ironic in light of where I live (this local area is a golf hotbed, but probably below average interest in college football).

Maybe if Rochester had a DI team to root for, more people would care about it. I'm an SU fan, but only because Syracuse was my second choice as a school and a majority of my friends in college were from the Syracuse area. Otherwise, I wouldn't even care as little as I do.Terry in Crapchester wrote:I'll grant you that order is somewhat ironic in light of where I live (this local area is a golf hotbed, but probably below average interest in college football).
BTW: You can know that golf is a hard game just by watching and by going out to play every once in a while. But unless you play the game on a regular basis, you can't possibly understand the physical and mental demands the game places on the player who is trying to improve his game and make a certain score.

No it's not. BSmack pretty much said the same thing:Dinsdale wrote:Terry in Crapchester wrote:You don't have to play golf, at least not on a regular basis, to realize it's a difficult game.
What an asinine statement.
I've played golf maybe ten times in my entire life, and I don't have anywhere near the free time or interest to pick it up on a regular basis, at least not right now. But I've still played enough to realize that it's a very difficult game. Right now I'd be lucky to break 150 for 18 holes. If I started playing regularly, I'm sure my score would improve dramatically in somewhat short order, then plateau at a level significantly short of where the pros play.BSmack wrote:You can know that golf is a hard game just by watching and by going out to play every once in a while.
I've played enough to know that you get a good, or perhaps lucky, shot every once in awhile (matter of fact, my first time out ever I hit the pin from about 100 yards out on the 4th or 5th hole), but for every one of those a newbie is gonna screw the pooch ten times. That's more than enough to know that it's a difficult game.
The truly asinine statement would be to suggest that one cannot know it's a difficult game unless one plays it regularly. By that standard, most of us couldn't know that all sports, or even the ones we actually bother to follow, are difficult.
I don't think it would even have to be in Rochester, if SUNY had even one campus with a longstanding (and somewhat successful) D1 track record.Terry in Crapchester wrote:BSmack wrote:I'll grant you that order is somewhat ironic in light of where I live (this local area is a golf hotbed, but probably below average interest in college football).

But what you don't understand are the complexities of the game that arise even after you begin to master the rudimentary fundmentals of a swing, putting and short game play. And you never will unless you start playing on a regular basis.Terry in Crapchester wrote:I've played golf maybe ten times in my entire life, and I don't have anywhere near the free time or interest to pick it up on a regular basis, at least not right now. And no, I don't think if SUNY Albany were a DI powerhouse anybody in Rochester would care. Or Binghamton. Maybe Buffalo would get a rise out of Rochestarians. But that's about it.

If they were suddenly to become a D1 powerhouse, you'd be right. However, if they had a longstanding tradition going back to, say, the 1950's, that'd be different. State U becoming a national powerhouse has a way of invoking pride that extends significantly beyond the immediate geographic area of that campus. For example, I'm sure there's a sizeable Penn State fan base in both Pittsburgh and Philly, even though both are a healthy distance away from Happy Valley.BSmack wrote:And no, I don't think if SUNY Albany were a DI powerhouse anybody in Rochester would care. In any event, it's purely an academic argument. SUNY didn't even exist until the 1960's, and D1 sports weren't even contemplated there until the 1990's.

I care enough about golf to watch it. I would say that I watch about 15-20 tournaments a year (PGA and LPGA) and I have gone to a few as a spectator.
As BSmack wrote earlier in the thread, you have to play the game enough to fully appreciate watching what these guys do on tv.
