Should I have to be a parent to the other PARENTS? I parent MY kids at home AND in public.

I would say about 75% of the crowd of about 60 parents brought at least 1-3 gradeschool aged kids with them...

She said that she has been teaching kindergarten for ten years and that even in that short a time she has seen a sharp degradation of parental involvement and their attentiveness to the kids who she has taught.
Gee, I wonder if that doesn't have anything to do with deployments to Iraq?

Is everything the fault of the War in Iraq? Good lord dude.....

Now, is the lady pictured below the one we’re talking about? When you first shared this photo of you and your sister earlier this year, you indicated you would never get married. How many little bastards do you two have together?

See my last post. I was being sarcastic.

Why don't you go ahead and point which generation of parents was "properly prepared" and what, exactly, constitutes proper preparation.
Probably like ours: two parents at least for the first 5 -7 years of a kid's life, constant 'belt-tightening' and economizing, missing vacations, etc. because all the money in the world wasn't there. Constant speeches about the evils of credit, drugs, sex-before-marriage, the setting of boundaries as to what kids can and can't do, support in their endeavors, the constant push through schooling to show why we needed a good education, limits on outside influences like TV, and adult answers to questions about "Why can't WE afford that." The teaching of an open mind to others, and respect for anyone older than you - inlcuding teachers.
Basically a family unit without the pressures from anything outside that unit.
it's a pity, numbscal, that you can't point to your parents and their preparation - everyone was a first time parent at one time and simply did it. perhaps not in Amurrica.

Th,

Why are her arms pinned to her side?

*AWKWARD HUG ALERT*

Oh, and that post was bordering on Rack Fu levels of freakin' out.

I never understood people who spend so much time worrying about other peoples' kids. There's gonna be good parents. There's gonna be bad parents. Just worry about your own. I don't even have kids and this shit's STILL pretty much common sense.

You dumbass Mgo,he couldnt hear what the speaker was saying at the little assembly meeting thing because of the little trolls running around imposing there shitty parents lack of care on him in a most volumous way...Pay attention next time.

Another thing he might worry about is his kid playing with these little basterds, picking up obnoxious habits and traits.

He might also worry that the teachers will be so tired from disciplining the little fuckers that they dont give a shit about all the good little Th kids.

Trollholler, you need to just chill out and do what you can for your kid and yourself. Don't worry about other people's kids or the parents themselves. Worry about you and your situation. One thing I knew not to do as a teacher was talk about other parents or their kids to another parent.

You also need to keep in mind that the tardiness of parents may have something to do with the parents' work schedules. One thing I would ask of you as a parent that will be involved, is to focus on your child and not complain to the staff about others. It puts the teacher in a bad spot and it is unprofessional to gossip about other peoples business.

Those Back to School Nights were never any fun. Brand new teachers tend to get the lower performers and kids of asshole parents. Most parents are pretty cool and know how hard it is to take 36 kids, (K through 3rd grade usually has 20 students out in CA) get them organized, and get the classroom management system working. It takes a couple of weeks for younger kids to learn the procedures, expectations, and the consequences of what they choose to do.

I just completed all of my LVN/LPN prerequisites this week and it's the same thing. The instructors know I was a teacher in the district and tell me it's the same shit with the adult students.

What I would suggest is that you just keep involved with your child and don't be a pain in the ass to the staff. Teachers love involved parents, but remember they got time constraints and just realize there are others that want to take up all of their time also.

Socalvansmack and I talked about this education stuff in Princeton, NJ a little over a year ago. I can't believe it's been over a year.

Anyway, stay involved and don't worry about other turds and their parents.

I've been in a downward spiral since 1980 but it's hella fun. Rack Mike BTW!
Be a great Dad and always be aware of what's going on. It's easy to get bent outta shape but it's a LOT more fun to get involved. Parents that neglect or are to busy to pay attention suck but it's hella fun being a mentor in some very simple ways. Not only do you spend some quality time with your own kids you can teach others because their folks are to lazy, stupid or "busy" to appreciate what they are doing. These people have no idea what they are missing. Be a coach and get on those class field trips.....

It's just starting with you and Ms. TH, and nows the time to get involved and never stop, you will never be sorry you did..........

the MILF's are nothing but bonus material for your effort..........

36 kids? Damn. My son usually has about 15-18 in his class. Granted, he's only entering 3rd grade, but the number of teachers per grade is pretty constant up through and including sixth grade. I suppose class sizes could get a little bigger once he's in high school, but there's only about 120 kids in his entire class, so it shouldn't be that big a leap.

I didn't realize how fortunate he was in that regard.

You see, this all ties into the vicious downward spiral of which our illustrious Th has eluded to; i.e. neglect of the elderly. Obviously, from the Coprolalia laced disparagement you've vomited here, you've missed your meds, worked yourself into an inflamed hemorrhoidal tirade. Now you've wet yourself, and it's beginning to sour...if only you'd not been such an ass, the staff at Loving Care Meadows would see fit to change your diaper and give you that highly tardy sponge bath.

Good luck with that.

I'm raising two of my own, and helping with my neice and nephew. From a senior in high school, to a third grader. They are all in accelerated classes and doing great, and often parents and teachers shower them with praise for their behavior.
It helps being lucky.

Echoing what Y2K said, particpation in their activities really makes a difference. Most parents seem to just use their kids activities as an opportunity to dump them off for a couple of hours of free babysitting, or a weekend off, when they are camping or involved in some project or another.

You don't have to be perfect, you just have to be there.

Don’t get all pissy just because I called you on your stupidity. You accused me of spreadsheeting, as if this board were worth spending the time to create some sort of database. I don’t need it. I was blessed with an excellent memory, though I can’t for the life of me remember ever reading an interesting Fat Bones post. Know your place. I visit this board for shits and giggles. You provide the shit, I’ll provide some giggles.

Mikey wrote:I've had a similar, though maybe not as glaring, experience the past few years at our HS.

For three years we've been going to "back to school" night, usually a few weeks into the school year. This year's hasn't happened yet. First everybody gathers in the "barn" (the old gym) where the Principal gives a welcome speech and introduces the administration, department heads, ASB President, etc. Then we all go on a quick walk through of our kids' schedule and meet the teachers in the classrooms.

Every year they announce that the welcome presentation will be in the gym at 6:30 pm. Being the anal retentive geeks that we are we always show up at least 15 minutes early so we can park and get a seat. The we sit there for at least 35 or 40 minutes while all the other parents wander in, at least 30% to 50% from 15 to 20 minutes late. The Principal doesn't even attempt to get started until at least 6:50.

Here's my beef. If you that announce an event will start at 6:30 you should start it at 6:30. If you're going to an event that is supposed to start at 6:30 you shouldn't be wandering in at 6:45. I've got better things to do than sit my aging ass on a hard wooden bench for an hour. This is a school ferkreistsake. What kind of example does this give the kids if, by not even turning the mike on until 20 minutes late, you're telling them that it's OK not to be on time?

We have a new Principal this year. I'll reserve judgement until then.
RACK. Every event that I've ever attended at my step-son's Junior High School (Band Concerts, etc) starts at least twenty minutes late to accomodate people who can't seem to show up on time.

Kids don't fear anything nowadays.
They fear me...

...and the rash of homework that I give them if they don't stop talking in my class when I tell them to.

I may not last long as a teacher, but it will be because their parents aren't doing things the right way, not because I failed them as a teacher.

I'm going to do things the way that they were done when I was a kid, and if that works, they'll thank me for it someday, even if their parents are too ignorant or apathetic to do so.
