I have pimped maria mckee here before. She was the singer of lone justice, an annoyingly 80's alt-country band. She's been solo since about 1988. Her album You Gotta Sin to Get Saved from 1993 is a country-tinged gem. On that release, she covers "I can't Make It Alone" by carole King as well as "The Way Young Lovers Do." by Van Morrison.
Most of you may remember her song "If Love is a Red Dress (Hang me in Rags)" fromn the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, ya know the one wiith the whistling? that's it.
Anyhoo, Her album High Dive from 2003 is a GREAT effort. This is the first effort in which her varied influences come together full force. The CD possesses rewarding arrangements and melodies, solid lyrics, and inspired production. The greatest thing, of course, is her balls-to-the-wall voice. In fact, Maria McKeee has one of the most powerful voices I can think of. She has a masterful pitch and an upper-register power unrivalled by most rock singers. Check it out on Itunes or wherever. People who are fans of singer/songwriters will find it most rewarding.
also, I downloaded Alanis Morrisette's "21 Things I want in a Lover." Great song. Say what you want about Alanis; so she fucked Uncle Joey, so she doesn't know what "ironic" means, she's a stupid carpet muncher, blahh. blah, blah--the fact remains that she's a clever lyricist and one of the most important females in music over the last 10 years. You don't gain as much coffee house cred as she has without at least some skills and Alanis has proven to be a master of cultivating and expressing the inner essence of her of her songs. Her true talent lies in her pure approach to her songs, whether you believe what she's saying or not. She has gained a more subtle approach to her material and that makes everything she does more effective. i peeped some of her MTV unplugged album and the thing is that in that subdued setting, her voice sounds GREAT amidst the calm acoustic and string arrangments.
one more: Pantera is the AC/DC of metal. Since '92's classic, Vulgar Display of Power, Pantera proved to be THE premier metal band out there. The great thing about this band was that Phil Anselmo belted out better than average lyrics with a voice straight from Hades and Dimebag's agility on the frets made whatever was coming around the corner not only anticipated but interesting. RIP Dime, you were one of the most talented metal shredders out there and made Pantera what it was. Without your riffs, the band is dead.
more: The Cramps, The Damned, Melissa Aud Der Maur, X, Talking Heads
