BIG 12, meet Godzillatr0n

Post by PrimeX »

Hey, Austin: Meet Godzillatron
Associated Press
Posted: 38 minutes ago

The monstrous new scoreboard the University of Texas' gridiron football stadium, towering over the south end zone at 55 feet high and 134 feet wide, is more than just a Texas-sized upgrade at Royal-Memorial Stadium, home of the defending national champions. :D

It's nearly as wide as the field itself and will be, for a short time at least, the largest high-definition video display board in the world, school officials said.
And Texas players can't wait to watch super-sized replays of their touchdowns.

"Oh man, that thing's big," wide receiver Quan Cosby said. "At night, we don't need the lights, it's so bright."

The $8 million scoreboard and sound system easily dwarf the old unit. It's the most visible change so far in a $150 million stadium renovation that will add about 10,000 seats in the north end zone, bringing capacity to just over 90,000 by 2008.

Not that I'm too familiar with Royal-Memorial Stadium, but they're bringing the capacity up to 90k by 2008? I guess I'm a bit surprised that the stadium is so small.

Don't most people get caught cheating because they have too much penis? Or at least use it too much?

DKR also has this really sweet inflatable tunnel that belches out smoke, longhorn players, and sometimes Rob Halford on a Harley.

PX,
While it does look awesome, I saw a pic of them testing the board and with all the advertisments (they circle the entire board) it kind of diminishes the potential.

Nice billboard.

Good to see they could squeeze in enough room for the "scoreboard" part.

edit: sorry, didn't read all the other takes about the ads. I guess that part was pretty evident, anyway.

That looks HORRIBLE.

With all the $ in that athletic department, you wouldn't think they would turn your scoreboard into a NASCAR car.

What's with the bleachers underneath? I know HS football is huge in Texas...did they have to emulate a HS stadium to calm the bluehairs?

I was thinking the same thing, PSU.

I'm sure Prime was really proud about this idea before hitting submit. Doesn't look like things went according to plan.

Long term expansion of Kyle Field. Will hold 115,000 and be the largest football stadium in the USA.

They said this is a "vision" right now. May take 15 more years until it becomes reality. It will be sweet though.

Wow, that looks nice. Unfortunately, I think tOSU has maxed out its potential. The stadium is a historical site and any major mods would be in violation.

Until Michigan decides to blow everyone away and add a second deck. The Big Hole already holds 107K, and that's just with the original bowl.

I think Tenn is in the 106K range. I know them and UofM had a pissing match for a little while on who had the biggest stadium, and UofM ended it by adding a few rows which put it over anything that Tenn could do.

If so, it won't be for long (as said by a few others already). UofM alums will never allow their AD to relinquish that ranking. And yes, the Big Hole has a lot of potential for expansion-- currently, it only stands about two feet from ground level. Funny thing is though, to keep a #1 ranking in something, the cheapskates in the athletic department have been more determined to paint the seat numbers closer together than to actually do a re-model. Until recently.

The crazy thing about the scoreboard is that as of a few days ago there was a chance it had to come down. The Texas DOT was to hold a meeting about it. In Texas billboards along highways can only be the old paste it up style, no electronic images. Since the the stadium sits within direct sight of the upper deck of IH35 there was talk that it could be a traffic hazard and even illegal. I haven't heard anything about it in the last fews days. I figure the deep pockets of UT would not let the demise of it happen before the first game. But you think someone would have been smart enough to check regulatuons and codes before erecting it.

Rack whoever compared it to a NASCAR car. That thing is sweet but the ads do diminish the effect. Anyone else see a bunch of ads on something and make sure to NOT stare at it? We get enough advertisements rammed down our throats everywhere we turn...screw trying to watch a replay with a bunch of shit ads flashing all around it.

Memorial Stadium in Lincoln had the first stadium screen in college fb if I remember right.

Nah, Michigan won't need a second deck. They will just shrink the seat size down to 4" per person to get the record back.

The bleachers under the scoreboard are temporary the real ones will be installed by 2k8. When Texas finally closes in the other side it will be bigger than any stadium in college football right now.

I still trying to understand why the aggies need 115K stadium when they never sellout their current stadium unless they play Texas.

Partially true Lance. The original architecture of the Big House...aka, the hole that Yost dug, Schembechler filled, and Canham carpeted, was designed for potential expansion to over 200,000. This showed amazing forsight considering it was pre-depression era. There has been much debate from the old guard regarding the current/future renovation which mostly includes suites and hardly changes the capacity. Do the powers at UM want to maintain the largest capacity in the land...probably, and why shouldn't they? There is demand for tickets, and the football program foots just about the entire bill for the athletic program. We were first, biggest, and best. If it were any of your schools you'd expect the same.

I call Bullshit on Vito...

how many people will Texas stadium hold when they close it in? I mean the Jumbotron takes up a huge amount of room...it holds what approximately 80K or so right now and you are saying you are going to add roughly 40K in seats to eclipse Tennessee and Michigan???

just asking for the facts of what might be going on there...

Vito,

It has been stated that success of the programwill dictate any changes to Kyle. At the rate we are going now, I don't see this happening anytime soon. Estimates are 100-200 million for the expansion they are talking about. No chance in hell that happens unless we get a NC and contend for a couple more int he next 15 years.

Wouldn't it be sweet if Texas showed some poor schlep putting the wood to Bevo up on that bad boy ... say, around the second week in October?

I bet they could sell some ads for that, too.

Neither side is enclosed the stadium holds about 80K without the temps. When the permanent bleachers are in it will push it up to 90. When they enclose the other end it will add an additional 20K to 25K kicking the total up to 110K to 115.

Right now Texas usually oversells at a rate of about 3000 extra tickets per game. With the extra temp bleachers the capacity is 85K but I guarantee you will see 88K+ for the tOSU game.
