Texas is #1 yet again
After the Rose Bowl and party school ranking this came out a few days ago...
UT breaks merchandising record
03:11 PM CDT on Saturday, August 26, 2006
By CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News
AUSTIN – The University of Texas has broken the record for licensed merchandise by bringing in $8.2 million for the 2005-06 school year.
The Longhorns beat the previous record of $6.2 million set by Michigan in the 1993-94 school year, when the Wolverines’ basketball program became known as the "Fab Five" and began setting fashion trends in urban areas, according to officials at Collegiate Licensing Co.
Texas’ record total came in an unprecedented year of success in sports at the university, capped by a national title in football.
"It's kind of that perfect storm, and we were able to capitalize on it," said Craig Westemeier, UT director of trademark licensing. "Everything had to go just right, and it did."
According to Collegiate Licensing Co., Michigan finished second to Texas, with Notre Dame, Georgia and North Carolina rounding out the top five.
The record sales mark the first time UT has been first in royalties, knocking North Carolina from the No. 1 spot for the first time in five years.
Schools that use other licensing companies or are independent include Ohio State, Southern California and Texas A&M. Revenues from those schools were not included in the rankings.
Besides the Longhorns' first football title since 1969, a College World Series in 2003 also helped boost royalties by 103 percent. The money goes to entire university and not just the athletic department because the school owns the trademarks.
T-shirts were the top-sellers for UT, followed by hats. After the Longhorns beat USC in the Rose Bowl, the school's 450 licensees sold everything from key chains to mini football helmets to a Waterford crystal football. Even coach Mack Brown's photo on the Wheaties cereal box brought in money.
UT's standard royalty rate is 8 percent of each licensed item sold and 12 percent on national championship items.

Not a surprise.
They've got the San Antonio (1.1M+) market, plus big portions of Dallas, Houston and every other city to town to dot-on-a-map, with Texas fans -- millions of people in the medium to dots alone -- who've been waiting decades buying in, not to mention 50,000 students and a more than 650K local population.

Hell I've seen Texas gear in small towns in Canada, all over Minnesota, Utah, Iowa, Kansas, and North Dakota.
Visiting San Antonio is crazy, the mall near my parents house has 2 shops that carry nothing but Texas gaar.

What a shocker to see a teams gear all over.Vito Corleone wrote:Hell I've seen Texas gear in small towns in Canada, all over Minnesota, Utah, Iowa, Kansas, and North Dakota.

Sin,
Every team that has ever won a MNC.
Seriously, is this any sort of suprise. Texas won the NC last year!!! Shops dedicated to nothing but UM gear have been around since the late 70's. If it took a NC to turn the state burnt orange...well that's just sad.
Living in Florida I see tons of UM gear, OSU gear, ND gear, PSU gear, even some OU gear among the FSU and UF majority. Not much gear from west coast squads...apparently they have their own beach communities to flock to.

There is a big difference when your gear is all over a state like Michigan where there is only two schools of note. Texas has about 10 D-1A schools each with it's own fanbase. And the other 9 all hate UT with a passion. Your state might be divided in half but Texas you might say is divided into 10 different schools. You guys will never know what its like to compete in such an enviroment. The only other state like Texas is California where USC's domination is just as remarkable.WolverineSteve wrote:What a shocker to see a teams gear all over.Vito Corleone wrote:Hell I've seen Texas gear in small towns in Canada, all over Minnesota, Utah, Iowa, Kansas, and North Dakota.

Going bad? It's expected. Everybody else; every OTHER fanbase in the country would tell the bandwagoners to piss off, but Tejas NEEDS them; finds a way to talk smack about HAVING them... and still finds a way to look like more of an idiot.
Maybe Jon needs to come in and give our resident Tejas Idiot a grammar lesson?
It looks like the schools aren't just competing for merchandise... that's all I'm sayin'.

No surprise at all. t.u.fan is the epitomy of what is called a 2%er. Every school has their die hards. However, t.u., being the second largest undergrad student base in the nation for MANY years, has MANY alum, much more than most schools.WolverineSteve wrote:What a shocker to see a teams gear all over.

The fact that t.u. set this merchandising record only speaks to the alum that didn't own any t.u. gear prior to the NC. As you said, every schoolw ill have its bandwagon fans right after the NC. Usually it's kids sporting whoever just won. This dramatic increase, I have no doubt, is due to alumni finally dropping some bones for a shirt and/or hat so they can claim superiority over another team's fan even though no one knew they went to t.u. prior to this.

ND fan needs to shut his pie hole about bandwagon fans, that’s all you got.
I could care less about the bandwagon fans except that every time they bone up for some UT merchandise it puts money in the athletic dept pockets so we can buy giant plasma TVs for our stadium.
And just for the Grammar police I took my time and made sure this take was correct.
BTW skull how’s that investigation going?

I'm not saying ND doesn't have it's share of bandwaggon fans. Hell, look at the media. But to say that's all ND is dead wrong.Vito Corleone wrote:Dear Pot,Killian wrote:Recent scene in Austin:

And it's "couldn't care less" not "could care less". You know, seeing as how you checked and all.
