can he do less with the greatest talent? Think of all the great Duke teams and only three National Titles. Think of the talent on the USA Basketball team and how they didnt pull out the W this morning.

Same thing was said about Dean Smith, who won exactly TWO national titles "with all that talent." I used to think that way too. But National championships are extremely difficult to win, no matter your talent. Winning one is great. Two is superb. THREE is amazing. If great coaches like Smith and K only have 5 between the, it's gotta' be pretty tough.

As for THIS NBA team, very disappointing. Next coach.........Bob Knight.

It's more than hoops. It's the US with by far the best talent in the world vs. everyone else. I could take it if we lost to a team with several NBA'ers but fucking Greece? No way. We need to field a team of white college kids with heart that can hit free throws and open jumpers. Hell we never lost an international game back in the day. I'm sick an tired of undisciplined dunking orangutans.

The USA hasn't won shit since 2000. The rest of the world has caught up. The US is no longer dominant over the rest of the world in basketball.

And perhaps you're dealing with the usual situation that occurs when you pit a hastily thrown together team of all stars vs a more experienced and more cohesive team...

Also, yeah, absolutely, the rest of the world is catching up to us in basketball. Of course they haven't actually caught up but the gap is definitely closing.

Simple question: How would the best team Greece could put together do in the NBA, playing against actual NBA teams on a nightly basis.

The Greek national team, or Greece's best professional team, against the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and Detroit Pistons, night in, night out.

The Greeks would get shithammered. Being Greek, hey, they might actually like it, but shithammered they'd get nonetheless...

Probably a bit of both. Coach K hasn't won anything outside of Duke, has he? Losing in tournaments like this is one of the reasons I can't stand idiots like Jim Nance singing nothing but praise for the guy. Of course, there'll be no mention of today's loss during the tournament this spring, only a plethora of Coach K car and American Express commercials.

Look at the players on this team. How man are pure shoorters and how many are isolation 1-on-1 guys?

What works in the NBA is that the teams will have at all times between 1 and 3 "shooters" on the court. If and when your isolation guy gets double or triple teamed (which they always do with these zones in international play), there's an outlet and the shooter makes them pay.

They had the wrong guys on the court. They had the "me" guys, not the "team" guys.

I think the Phoenix Suns would win this tournament by more than 20 points per game. No other team could hang with them. I even heard Barkley say earlier today in an interview that this team just plays half court, drive to the lane, try to dunk basketball. He said the initial dream team never had set plays as they were too busy running the other team out of the gym. I agree.

Agreed that a monster NBA team that had been playing together for seasons would destroy. But a let's say a San Antonio team without Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili (sp?), and any other foreigner? Is Tim Duncan a citizen? That's quite a bit of so-called chemistry, err, talent to lose, perhaps not enough to shithammer a good Greek team. Heck, the U.S. doesn't even compare to Persia. I'm sure Phidippides would be lacing 'em up again for the chance to tell Athens they beat Brent Barry, Nick Van Exel, and Robert Horry.

There were a couple of problems for the US......

First, the US didn't get to send all of it's best players (yet again). While some of the best players might not have been selected because of their attitudes, others nixed representing their country because they placed their own wants over the need of their country. I think we all can click of names of players who should have been there but chose not to be. Nothing new here, but fuck'em again.

Secondly, the egos of US players makes chemistry a difficult thing to achieve. I'm not sure if they had been together for a couple of years that they would have had any better chemistry. Asking these guys to check themselves after being pampered by everyone for decades is a huge order to fill.

I do have to give props to Carmelo, though. His comments about the Greeks after the loss made me feel better about being represent by these guys than those who have on the last couple of national teams.
