Chiefs vs. Bengals

Chiefs pummeled Cincy 37-3 in Arrowhead 10 months ago and Cincy has not changed since then. While I'm not expecting a blow out, I do think the Chiefs will win again to open the 2006 season.

The keys to this game will be getting pressure up the middle on Palmer. I'm not sold on Reed and Edwards bring the heat from inside so I'll be expecting Gunther's blitz packages to be on display early and often. I do like the Hali and Jared Allen coming off the end, but Palmer steps up very well. The other key will be limiting Rudy on 1st and second down. I think the cover two is still a work in progress, but I'm impressed by the LB corps. Expect to see Ty Law on Chad Johnson most of the day - Chad should be good for 1 TD - but I think Ty holds him to 70 yds.

Last year Larry Johnson rolled for 201 yards and 3 TDs and while I don't think he will match that output in week 1, I also don't see the Gals holding him under 120 and 2 scores. A lot has been made of Willie Roafs retirement, but most of LJ's production starts in the middle behind Watters, Weigeman and Shields. With Cincy stacking against the run, I expect Gonzo to have 80 yds. and a score.

Give the Arrowhead advantage to KC.

Palmer will expose the Chiefs D though, I look for 300 plus yards thru the air and 3 TD's. Rudy also punches one in.

No matter though, in the end LJ rushing for a buck fiddy and 3 scores will be too much for the high powered Cincy offense to keep up with.

Tynes kicks a couple FG's, hopefully 50 yarders, and the Crusaders....errrr, the Chiefs, walk off the field on opening day with a hard earned 34-28 W.

Pretty much everything goes over Scott's head!

As much as I would love to see the Chefs blow it at home on opening day, it’s not going to happen. They can’t afford to start the season with a loss at home against another AFC team.

OK. So we've established the Bengals pulled Palmer after the first quarter with the 3 seed locked up.

Did they pull their entire defense too?

How did LJ manage to pile up 200 yards rushing and 3 TDs?

And does anyone think they would have wanted to go into their first round playoff game with something other than a 37-3 drubbing?

Cincy did have something to play for last year, if'n I remember correctly. With a win, they'd have gotten New England in the first round rather that Pittsburgh....not that that would have made a difference or anything.

We looked like total dogshit on offense.

The O Line collapse was beyond horrible - Hell they couldn't even contain on a three man rush. I'm not sure the tackle situation can be fixed. I won't be surprised to Welbourne welcomed back with open arms in week 7. - Sampson, Turley and Svitek are scubs - period

Huard is the worst and has zero game awareness.
If Green is out for an extended period - this season is over before it gets going. At this point, I'd welcome looking at a trade for Billy Volek or throwing Croyle in there.

Had Green not gotten oJ'd - the game may have may have been closer - but Solari botched the play calling and it's obvious he's in over his head. If that's all the result of Herm - then carl has made a fatal error in judgement for this franchise. Why they kept attacking the outside is beyond me. The middle was wide open - of course green didn't have time for anything beyond a 3 step drop all day.

Too bad, as the defense now looks to be competitive - Rack Jared Allen, Ty Lay, Kawika Mitchell, Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali as all looked good today

Props the the Bengals - Although they don't look nearly as impressive as I had thought they would. It's a long season - maybe they'll get it clicking with housh back

Not good enough, by far. But to be fair, the rain and sloppy conditions actually played into Cincys hands, as they had built a 14-3 lead when it really started pouring. Throw in Green getting cold cocked (on a cheap but perfectly legal hit, btw) and you have the makings of what we saw today. Total disaster and Chiefs fans worst nightmare, Trent getting hurt.

It's a long season

Yep, and it'll be real easy to bail on this team after only one game, especially if Trent is out for awhile. Even if he isn't, if they can't protect him better, he might as well be.

All in all, a very disappointing start to the season, but it ain't over yet by any means.

They weren't all straight up the middle. Two were off-tackle, and the third was a draw play.

Sure ... I'd have loved to see a TD (and my initial reaction was much different than yours), but it's OK to go against the grain every once in a while. Had that last run on 3rd and 5 gone the distance, we'd have been praising the call as gutsy. That's how it goes in the game ... you're always going to be second-guessed when things don't work out.

Don't hang this one on the play-calling.

So, what was your initial reaction then? Mine was cussing at the play call on 3rd and 5 at the 11...and no, it wasn't a freaking draw play, as if a draw play A DRAW PLAY in the redzone in that situation could somehow mitigate the incredible stupidity of the call...it was a straight handoff up the middle.

As it turns out, when questioned about that numbskull call, Herm and Solari said there was some "miscommunication" on that call. One of them thought it was only 2nd down, and the other thought it was only 3rd and 2. :mad:

"gutsy call" my ass, it was a downright negligent case of the stupids.

WTF? Is it too much too expect the fucking HEAD COACH and the O-coordinator to know the goddamn down and/or distance?

What game did you watch? The play calling absolutely sucked. Later, after that boneheaded sequence, there were two consecutive 3 and out series in the 2nd qtr in which LJ didn't touch the damn ball once.

Al Saunders will be missed the most. KC went from one of the top offenses to middle of the pack the second he left.

Nothing happens without Green, mind you, but that's what you get when you don't have a capable backup on the roster for your 36-year-old QB.

I still think there's gas left in offensive tank, but we're getting as think as the Patriots defense over the last couple years.

The difference is I don't see Edwards = Bellichick when it comes to plugging holes and masking weaknesses.

It's no secret this was the last chance the Chiefs had to get to the dance with this offense.

No one saw Roaf retiring a year early, but it's a foregone conclusion Shields hangs 'm up in January. The rest of the offensive stars - save for LJ are long in tooth - Green, Gonzo, Kennison, Watters, Weigman - Carl doesn't have anything in reserve for any of those spots.

Add in Schottenhermer and you have a recipe for 6-10.

At least we'll beat the Raidust.

Just watched it again during the commercial break.

Green dropped back and handed off to LJ, who delayed his break to the line for the QB, as is the case in any draw.

That said, neither Green nor the OL were spoofing a pass play, so I'll concede that it technically wasn't a draw play, as you would draw it up.

No, I payed plenty of attention to the fact that Reuben Droughns scored you 2 (you know, the guy you were bwa-ing over), and that you lucked out with Wilkins scoring 20. Combine that with Carson Palmer having an off day like yesterday with only 9.5 points, and you should be wiping your forehead and going whew.
