Pay to Hunt
Well today was the start of dove hunting season here in Washington. I awoke this morning around 5:30 to go out and change water here on the farm, and I expected to hear the ocassional blast of a finely tuned shotgun now and again as the opening day hunting tradition is continued. What I heard was multiple shots per minute. There's a neighboring wheat stubble field about a mile away from where I was changing water that borders the west end of our property and I could hear the shots coming from that area. God there must be a ton of birds over there for that much shooting I thought.
Well, what was going on blew my mind and brought to mind ethicacy questions. A hunting lodge/guiding service had rented the wheat stubble field for guided dove hunts from the farmer who was farming it. All along the east border of this field standing along the weed line were hunters, about every couple hundred feet or so,25 or 30 guys! God Damn it was a fucking masecre. There couldnt be a bird that escaped.
Now Im cool with hunting, but when the NRA and hunting groups start to tell me this shit is OK....I dont know. I think of hunting as a couple of guys or father/son going out, scouting possible spots, and getting permission from a land owner and hunting till there limit is met on a reasonable sized piece of ground. This pay for sucess shit to make city folk feel masculine is BS. BTW...a lot of these pay to hunt guys are rich guys from Seattle or other parts of the over crowded west side of Wa.
Republicans,Of which I am one, and the Farm Bureau tell me all about property rights, and how the farmer or rancher should be able to do whatever with his land. When we fight for the rights of the property owner over the greater good of the comunity is that right?
You know they dont make land anymore, and with the increase of the population, each of us will be squeezed more and more to find the surenity the nature provides.Sucks
All right,im done ranting.

I would imagine those probalby were all pen raised and released doves.
Unless its like some of the dove hunts in Texas and Mexico where the fucking doves come over in waves and you jsut whack and stack them.
That is your neighbor farmer, getting paid to put his land in CRP, then lease out hunting rights to some guides, who specialize in getting those RMF's over from Seattle to spend their money.
I have not hunted doves in years....mother fuckers fly wayyyy to fast to hit, there ain't no fucking meat on them, and standing in a fence row on a broiling September day seems stupid to me.
Now in my area.... there is a ton of land that is in flood plain or partial flood plain. Devlopers are building developments and have to purchase mitigation rights, and build replacement wetlands. You can sell the mitigation rights to a developer,( for a lot of money) retain ownership of the land, get Ducks Unlimted to fund building the new wetlands, then rent the wetlands out for hunting for about $ 250 a day PER GUN.

By guided hunt Im actually talking about not so much a guide helping you as I am stating that you are buying the right to use land to hunt on. A LOT of farmers are starting to lease there land out in the winter to hunting clubs or guiding services to serve there clients. Prime spots along the Columbia or Snake river are the most coveted. I think some guys pull in enough money renting hunting rights during the winter that they plant the much goose loved corn over and over year after year. Hunting rights in some cases are more profitable then farming the land itself.Uncle Fester wrote:I didn't really need to read beyond the phrase, "guided dove hunt."
That's fukken sad.
Its geting to be where if one wants to hunt he either goes to a crowded public site or pays a guide or club so he can have access to some rented primo land. Hunting, by way of excessive cost, is becoming an elitist sport.Thats my beef.

Walking around in the mud and shit, worrying about being shot in my Cheney, gas up there and back, lunch at some greasy spoon that leaves you with the squirts for 3 1/2 days, all for the love of being an American hunting man.
Safeway has Cornish game Hens on sale for $2.39 lb, a short rack of Mirror Pond, and you're back home in your chair in 28 minutes.
Tough choice for old Luth.

I think there is something to be said for having fun in just being involved and being there. Else why do anything? You can buy fish at Krogers..so no fishing. You can watch a video of snow skiing..so no Park City, etc. etc.Luther wrote:Walking around in the mud and shit, worrying about being shot in my Cheney, gas up there and back, lunch at some greasy spoon that leaves you with the squirts for 3 1/2 days, all for the love of being an American hunting man.

Either a gas a solid structure like ice. Maybe that's what he meant.88 wrote:I don't mean to sound stupid (whoops), but how does one change water, and why do you do it? What does it change into?
What's worse are the "road hunters" that drive around and shoot from their trucks.
Last time I went hunting I was still in the USN working out of NAS North Island. A college buddy that was a SEAL suggested we drive south of El Centro near the border. Lots of fields down there but almost all were restricted with no hunting allowed. So we go north to Niland next to the Salton Sea, which is where the SEALs do their weapons training among other things. Out in the middle of the desert we are blasting away while walking along a big canal. I fired a few shots and then I see a head pop up from the brush. Some drifter/homeless guy was living at least 5 miles from civilization and had a tent and a tarp for shade along side the canal. Then I walk over closer and see a big 3 foot pile of empty tin cans next to his shelters and then see he made steps to go down into the canal for bathing and water.
Apparently, there is a small population of these folks out in the wilderness... in the middle of nowhere. My buddy said they are there because there is no law around. I guess I gave him a wake up call early that morning as it rained #8 shot in his living quarters. I'll never forget seeing that scraggly blonde hair and beard popping up to what what just happened. That still trips me out people live like that.
We got a few doves and contrary to opinion here, they have plenty of meat on them unless they are city birds.

Ive got a bit of antiquated farm as I have wheelines. Every twelve hours I move them sixty feet to a new spot to water.Kinda of like watering your yard with hoses and sprinklers. Every so often you move the sprinklers about, thus "changing" there position.
Glad I could be of help.

If so , I'm guilty because the 6 trout I caught in my net saturday never touched a hook and line
btw
fuck those fenceline tards. I have buddies that guide hunts, and have tagged along a few times. His hunts are nothing like that line up and blast crap, but you never turn your back on the clientel for fear of em "peppering" you by accident.
there are still places out in the high desert here where a guy can go out by himself about 7pm on a fall weeknight, blast a few doves, tear out the breasteses and have em in the sautee pan by 8:30. unless there's bull bats.
fukk bull bats

Now we're talking about going to Aberdeen -
Yikes- There's another 3 hours and we don't know what the bird situation looks like up there

Whats this bull bat thing you speak of?
Bad spelling is a diversionary tactic
they actually aint bats at all

they have a weird wing shape and flapping motion that is very bat like. They can be agressive towards other bird and real bats. They'll fly way up high and chirp at their unwanted guests, then dive freefall right at the unsuspecting dove, or other bird. When they fall they make this weird fluttering sound with some skin flap or sumpdin.
fukken scares the doves away for miles.
cool birds to watch when hiking or fishing.
gax if you hunting doves
