RACK Charlie Weis!
He really showed me some things today.
-I thought the move to a 3-4 defense was smart. I didn't realize that to effectively run that defense, you have to couple it with aggressive playcalling. I know better now...but I'm still not sure Tom Bradley does. Quinn is going to beat you if you don't pressure him, and you rush him with three linemen. He was just taking whatever he wanted in the middle of the field.
-Charlie didn't wear a necktie to the game in order to faintly praise Joe Paterno, like Glen Mason has done. He showed up to beat them on the football field. WHile he had time to do so, he was aggressive in playcalling. It really seemed to be that the PSU staff was shocked at the temerity of Weis...how dare he try to score more points after they led in the game?
I briefly scanned the homer boards, and I have to say, I'm really glad I can post here, instead of there. All I'm reading there is that Charlie was classless, that he poured it on, etc.
BULL FUCKING SHIT.
Yes, he faked a punt when the game was basically over...but, he didn't ask for PSU to let the guy run like 75 yards straight up the middle. He didn't ask for PSU to not tackle the guy.
The PSU staff needs to learn this - you have to come out and score as many points as you can. That's how you win football games. You don't sit back and study your opponent, and slowly decide how to attack. You impose your will on the opponent, and make them try and stop you.
-Charlie needs to be thanked for shellacking PSU, because the PSU staff, players, and fan base needed to undergo a reality check. We needed to see that the defensive approach needs to CHANGE, and soon. As much as I've loved Derrick Williams and the other young guys stepping up, they seem like they have been believing some of the press about their own greatness. They need to see what it takes to be dominant football players, and to see how far they are from that level.
-Back to Tom Bradley...the PSU defense was utterly embarassed today, on a huge stage. This guy's scheme was just laughable. He takes the Butkus Award winner, a great kid coming back from a knee injury, and moved him inside, so that he can run all over the field for 60 minutes, and run down the field in pass coverage? He rushes three down linemen, fields 4 LBs, and has them all deep in coverage? This bullshit was sadistic.
So, RACK Charlie Weis. ND beat PSU in profound fashion today. I was at the 44-6 loss to Nebraska as a kid...but this was FAR worse. It was definitely the worst drubbing I've ever seem PSU take - they were dominated physically, mentally, and on the scoreboard for 60 minutes.
SO, then later on in the afternoon, my son and daughter are wrestling, and my son ends up dislocating his thumb. We spent a couple of hours in the ER getting him fixed up. He was a trooper while his thumb hung limply in his palm, while he waited for the docs to get to him. It sucks to see your kids in pain. He didn't quite understand the injury...he was sure that they'd have to cut his thumb off. The doctor worked it back in to place on the first try, and all is well...but it sure felt like the sky was falling for a few hours there.
BTW...RACK the ND fans, as well. If you guys see PSU fans here or elsewhere sounding the "Weis is classless, he rubbed it in" trumpets, send them my way...I want to rip those idiots apart. RACK Killian, who left me a message on my cell, incredibly gracious in victory. He's a great guy...and a tough sumbitch in crossing patterns.

Thanks for the post, PSU. I'm glad to see this rivalry renewed. Growing up as a kid, Penn State was always my second favorite team (although there was a considerable dropoff between #1 and #2). Penn State pretty much was eastern college football at the time. Syracuse was at the nadir of its program (although the current time is threatening to eclipse that), BC was a glorified lower-level team back then, and Pitt didn't make a national statement until I was in junior high.
I thought this rivalry had the chance of becoming something special, but sadly, it ended after Penn State joined the Big Ten. As I've said, the move toward superconferences has caused the end of many great rivalries.
Penn State is certainly a better team than it showed today, but was outcoached and outplayed in every facet of the game. Of course, this particular game was a rather rough baptism for Morelli.
I was glad to see this game, as there were a number of questions surrounding the program following last week's game, and they were all effectively answered today. Also, the defense is much more impressive than originally thought. So far, against two pretty good teams, we've only given up 27 points, more than half of which came long after one of the games was effectively over.

Unrack NBC and thier over-the-top "coverage" of ND football. Goddamn. If for nothing else I want ND to lose, just so NBC can fucking SHUT UP. It's week 2, jackasses. I don't need to see a rundown of national championships, much less a "history lesson" of what the students do, after the game, nor do I need to be reminded that it's the 5th anniversary of Sept. 11. Sorry, NBC, but your ND dicksucking and over-the-top platitudes aren't going to get me in the "mood" to be patriotic, nor cheer for ND.
FUCK. ENOUGH ALREADY. WE GOT IT -- ND is synonymous with "rising from the ashes" or whever else lame cliche you want to "announce" to us, NBC.
Sickening. And it's only week 2. Jesus Christ, GO MICHIGAN.

For that matter, ND has Army at home the week before USC. Draw whatever conclusions from that that you will.Van wrote:I was about to correct you until I caught the visual and then I laughed out loud and hoisted my Pepsi at you.Jimmy Medalions wrote:I don't know, but USC has a week off before ND...SoCalTrjn wrote:how many weeks off will ND have before the USC game this year?

As I said in the other thread, I was compeltely befuddled at Bradley's defensive gameplan. Nothing more I can add to your post, PSU.
However, I will disagree w/you about Derrick Williams and perhaps a couple others getting a bit full of themselves. I saw NOTHING that would lead me to believe that. DW had a bad game. That's all. I don't see him pumping his chest, beaing cocky, etc. He's pretty levelheaded. I think the loss could be good for some of the true freshman though. Guys like A.J. could benefit with some of this humble pie. Not that they were cocky, but like you say, it gives them a reality check.
I too read some of the other boards regarding ND supposedly 'running up the score'. I can't stand some of the idiots.

Terry,
while it's abundantly clear that ND is a solid squad, I don't think we should be surprised to see them in a different situation against UM and MSU. Neither of those teams will allow Quinn to pitch and catch to guys underneath, as PSU certainly did. I saw some halting adjustments made in the 4th quarter, and they started disrupting Quinn a little...but of course, it hardly counts when you've had your teeth kicked in for the prior three quarters.

However, if they are true to form, they'll give ND a hell of a game, or even beat them outright...then lose to Northwestern, or PSU, or some other mid-tier conference foe. Then, they'll do it again.

I'm very pleased with the way ND played. There are a few issues that need to be sorted out, but that's the way it is with every team.
I was expecting a dog fight for 3 quarters and for ND to pull away in the end. Having Morelli run the option was a confusing call and one that had Ron Powlus shaking like a beaten child on the sidelines. That play was the end of the day for PSU.
Like I told PSU on the message, any ND fan that wants to gloat better get it out of the way now. Next years team will likely walk into Happy Valley and walk out with a similar loss.
Glad this game is being played again.

Me too. But unfortunately, it's only this year and next.Killian wrote:Glad this game is being played again.
I was also glad to see the Georgia Tech series renewed, as that one has some special significance for me. In 1981, when I was a senior in high school, I made a trip up to ND for an interview in connection with the application process. I saw the ND-Georgia Tech game on November 7, 1981, the day after my 17th birthday. It was the first time I had ever seen a big time power college football game in person. At that time, Georgia Tech was an annual rival for ND, but that was the last renewal of that rivalry on a regular basis, as Georgia Tech joined the ACC the following season and the ND series became a casualty of that move. I was glad to see that renewed, if only for two years as a home-and-home.
Like I've said, the move to big conferences has not necessarily been a good thing for college football, although I know I'm in the minority on this board in that sentiment.

I don't agree with this at all. CWeis hasn't beaten anyone he should not have beaten (except maybe UM last year). Lets see how he fares this weekend and next. If ND is 4-0 after that, then he will deserve some props. And for the "own players in the system" I constantly hear ND fans go back and forth as to whether it is all Charlie or Willingham wasn't that bad a recruiter after all. Maybe you are just playing mind games but it sure sounds like you work for NBC.Jimmy Medalions wrote:^^
Weis is a great coach who will be downright scary once he's got his own players in the system. As it is, he's doing a great job.
And dammit, would someone tell him to untuck his shirt or figure out a better way to hide that hernia bulging out of his stomach.

He needs a much, much bigger belt. Problem is finding the boomarang to put it on.
The "Weis/ND hasn't beaten anyone they shouldn't have" argument goes back to their schedule and how shitty it turned out. If you look at how the season was supposed to go last year, he beat at least 4 teams people didn't think he would. 3 of those 4 teams turned out to be dog shit, and the 4th was a step above dog shit.
And it is Charlie. Willingham was that bad of a recruiter. In fact, more freshman played against GaTech than sophs and juniors combined. Great job, Ty.
