It's a Yankee Stadium tradition...I think it's kind of cool. The guy is goofy looking but his voice is incredible. His version of the song is only rivaled by Kate Smith's that used to be performed at Flyers' games in the 70s. I think they still do "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" in the 7th inning stretch over there...they've just kept this other tradition since 2001. They need to stop doing the guest conductors at Wrigley...that's becoming a joke. Play a recording of Harry and be done with it.

The Yankmes/Highlanders have been in NY since 1903 and the House that Ruth Built since 1923.
Pinstripes are a tradition.

He is most famous for his renditions of God Bless America performed at Yankee Stadium during important New York Yankee games, such as Opening Day, nationally-televised games, and playoff games. Additionally he has sung for Buffalo Sabres during their hockey games. He is also known for participating in the 1984 Olympics.

Tynan, until recently, was a member of the Irish Tenors. He left to pursue his own solo career in May of 2004.

God Bless America is sang to honor America...that's what the anthem at the begining of the game is for. How is it different? Not every city has kept the 'God Bless America' during the 7th inning stretch from 2001. Given that NYC was the center of 9-11 and that "tradition" started during the 2001 postseason when it was used as an extra boost of patriotism in a dark time...just months after the attack. Whether they keep doing this beyond this year and after isn't a big deal to me but I wouldn't start a thread in this message board to raise a complaint about it. It's not hurting anyone and it's done with respect and class...let it be.

Without insulting your intelligence, I'll give you a few reasons off the top of my head.

1. It's not the National Anthem, and it never will approach the National Anthem in terms of historic importance
2. It's not sung before the game
3. It's not a "tradition"
4. It's stuck in at the 7th inning stretch, where it obviously does not belong, only for the TV audience
5. Just because it's not "hurting anyone" doesn't mean it belongs
6. They can do whatever TF they want, but it's still bullshit.
7. Why don't we just have Kermit the Frog sing "It's Not Easy Being Green" between the 4th and 5th innings. That would be a cool "tradition" and it wouldn't hurt anybody either. Then maybe we could add a Donna Summer impersonator in each and every city singing "Hot Stuff" after the 5th.

Many consider "God Bless America" a better patriotic song and should've been or should eventually become the national anthem. The current anthem is just a poem about the flag put to music. I don't think any other song would've been chosen to be done in that 7th inning stretch slot other than something patriotic. In 2001, all teams adopted the song in addition to "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" after they returned to play after the week or so off after 9-11. It was appropriate and well accepted by everyone. To use the "It Ain't Easy Being Green" comparison is silly...the song has patriotic significance and since New York was the center of all of that and they've felt like continuing the custom and they have done so. MLB chose a song that would raise the spirits of those attending games all over the country following the terrorist attack. By the way, where's the law that says "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" has to be sung after the top of the 7th? Someone had to start that before it became a tradition much like singing "God Bless America" at Yankee Stadium has become a new tradition in on itself. If you don't like what they do at their ballpark...that's your choice. Write them a letter and tell them to stop doing it if bothers you so much. If not, just change the channel the next time TV is about to show it. I'm sure the people with Yankees chose to continue doing it just to annoy people like you.

I prefer Take Me out to the Ball Game for the 7th inning. It is a fun beer drinking song that can also be song by anyone with a smile on their face.

God Bless America is an excellent Patriotic song but IMO it is too serious for a baseball game.

Seriously, Tynan started singing that at the games following 9/11. Not a dry eye in the house. Tradition? Sure. Once there was a Year #5 of Harry singing "Take Me Out...." but it grew and grew. Some traditions are just older than others.

Detroit, as much as it pains me, has always done God Bless America on Sundays. Also, the TV didn't show it, but they did sing Take me out to the ballgame once FOX went to commercial.

Yeah, whatever. Still no national anthem before game 1, and that wasn't Sunday, BTW. Sorry but I'm a traditionalist. I can't see taking off my hat and standing for America the Beautiful, much less John Mellencamp singing a Chevy commercial. What a fucking embarassment that was. At least they did have the NA before the second game.

Maybe FOX is to blame more than Detroit but why are they showing some C&W loser singing God Bless America anyway? This is supposed to be baseball, not American fuckin Bandstand or let's see if the old-timer can carry a tune day. Sure the network has to have their commercials, but let's keep them to the commercial breaks, OK?
