Time to buy a laptop.

Post by smackaholic »

I am finally gonna break down and get a lap top. With new prices dropping, it seems like there is some pretty decent quality used stuff out there in the two hunnit dollar range. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

My needs are CD/DVD player, wifi ready or atleast capable and probably most impotently, I want something that will stand up to peanut butter and jelly, coffee, spooge and maybe the occasional dropkick.

Super fast processors or video capability really aren't a concern. I just want something that I can surf with or maybe have the kids watch movies on, on our way to grandmother's house.

Are there certain makes/models that are more durable than others?

thanks/go fukk yourself in advance,

Draw what you need with MS Paint, then post it. Once diT can be bailed out, he'll hack in to your line and set you up.

There are a bunch of laptops available online for $499.

All you have to do is customize them.

If you want things like an operating system, keys on the keyboard, a plug, etc. it'll bump the price up to about $2,350.

Do you want the light to turn off or stay on when you close the door?

I bought a Toshiba a couple of years ago because it was supposed to be the top brand for laptops for durability, quality, etc. Unfortunately, it now overheats after about ten minutes (even if it's raised up off the desk) and kicks off. Even more unfortunate is that I fucking paid for the extended warranty at Circuit City and they don't even have my purchase in their fucking system, and no, two years later I don't have the fucking receipt, dammit. Breath...breath... There's a full-on Sunday rant brewing here, but I'm not in the mood. But I digress... Anywho, just thought I'd let you know that not everyone has a stellar Toshiba experience.

never ever buy extended warantees. i bought a toshiba
hdtv at circuit city. works fine so far, but, for anything smaller than a big screen, i wouldn't waste my money on hd again.

how much trouble is it to hook my puter up to the hdtv? it has about 3 zillion input jacks on the back. must be one of them that will work.

I never buy it on low or medium ticket items, but always get it on big ticket items. So far, I'm batting 1.000('cept for the not in the system part....grrrrr). I had to use it to get the picture adjusted on my big screen after moving and now my laptop took a shit.

Super fast processors or video capability really aren't a concern.
Why not? That stuff is cheap now, no reason not to get it. Don't set yourself up for heartache with a shitty processor, because that affects everything, browsing, e-mail, etc.

If you want a real recommendation, post in the tech forum. If you want to be spackled with cheese, post here.

In that case, video capability, processing speed and memory ARE your concerns. Now if you're talking about something that's not much more than a word processor/spreadsheet manager, then you don't necessarily care about those things. But just wait until you try to play videos on a system with a shitty video card. You'll hate yourself for not doing it right.

I just got a new Dell Notebook. One thing that I wish it had was a backlit keyboard. The 2 gig of RAM and the upgraded video card make working with huge adobe photoshop files really nice.

A backlit keyboard? why? are the keys he wrong color?

Just get an external keyboard of your favorite color. Hell of a lot easier than those little keys, anyway.

Hey OCMike,

Just get one of these:

Might help with the overheating.

yeah, I might get a higher ratio of legit responses there, but, the cheese covered responses are fun too.
