I give the Lions a chance with Manningham out. Henne still has plenty of weapons but I think it could be one of those days where they'll rush for 200 yards as a team and wear down the defense late in the game.

I think this game has the potential to be a UM blowout.

UM exploits zone defenses well - PSU's base D is the prevent.

PSU must run successfully, or the staff is at a loss - UM has a wicked sick DL.

I honestly think this game will be in the 34-7 range, in favor of UM.

It ought to be an incredible scene leading up to the game, however. PSU might break their attendance record, which currently is 110,815 for the 2002 Nebraska game.

27-6 Michigan even without Manningham. I don't think I really need to explain my reasoning for that score all that much considering Michigan is clearly superior to PSU at just about every position on the field. Unless JoePa forgets what year it is and puts in Franco Harris, Michigan is gonna give Penn State a Dirty Sanchez.

All of a sudden I'm feeling a lot better about our chances at success.

JON, I think PSU has the edge at the LB position...I also think (without Mario in the game) that PSU has the edge in the WR department as well. Neither will be put to use better by the staff, though...

PSUFAN,

Michigan is still talented at WR without Manningham. But the biggest disadvantage is PSU's WR's are going against the Michigan secondary and not theirs, so that edge is significantly in Michigan's favor. Adrian Arrington could have a breakout game on Saturday.

Yeah, no shit... ain't that the truth.
I want so bad to believe that the PSU players will be put in the best position to win. Regrettably, that most likely will not be the case. I see PSU rushing 3 and 4, Henne w/time, and the PSU secondary being picked apart. Bend but don't break will work against most competition, just not very talented competition.

I'd also agree that PSU's LB's are superior to that of Michigan's. The WR position is up for grabs, with perhaps a slight edge to PSU. Underrated group that gets no love.

blindref, fuck you. I ain't watchin' that either.

Now, a point of clarification, please...

Does the Jon's Pick=Jinx thing count when he isn't labeling a game as one of his "locks"? See, while it's true that he's picking Michigan here I'm noticing a distinct lack of any "lock" verbiage in his prediction so I'm wondering if Michigan might still be safe due to this loophole?

It's debatable, but neither is as talented as Iowa. Just ask JON. That's what he said last year.

JON's trying to jinx the Wolverines so when they play next week, the Hawks could have a chance to jump them in the Big Ten standings. If Michigan somehow loses, I'll blame him and not oyd Carr.

First of all...

Jon nailed the UM pick last week...gotta give due where it's...well, due.

Secondly I think most of his post is spot on.

UM is superior in almost every facet. The loss of Manningham while significant, will not be the end of UM's dream season. Instead I look for true frosh Greg Mathews to see some action, possiby filling the deep threat void. Arrington has been solid already this year and his duties will be greater this week.

The key to the offense is Mike DeBord. He is running this unit so much like the 97 team...but with more versitile weapons. His goal is to protect the ball, chew clock, run the ball, and exploit favorable matchups.. I know it sounds like OC 101, but with the balance running and passing, with the athletes he has, his job should be easy.

I don't see PSU scoring enough to win this one. English's D is fast and aggressive. A rookie QB is like a fresh kill on the African Plains. The running game will be quashed, forcing Morrelli to try and beat UM with the pass...this will mean punts or turnovers...this will lead to a field position tilt in UM's favor. Michigan will outlast the Nits and should win by double-digits.

I'll go with...
UM-28
PSU-13

I agree with most of that. I expect a scrappy performance from Tony Hunt...and a bad one from PSU's defense.

What are the odds that the referees will be deciding this game? That matchup obviously favors UM.

Are you kidding me, a Dirty Sanchez rating by Jon is like fixing the game. I'm not a gambler but that is just easy money.

BTW...mucho props to UM. They pummeled PSU. The score was not indicative of the severity of the beating.

I anticipated controversial officiating. I recognize that PSU lost as a result of being beaten on the football field. HOWEVER...I wish the officials had thrown a flag on the Morelli hit.

Here's how I saw it:

The UM defender, totally unblocked, goes full speed at AM. AM gets rid of the ball. The defender has ample time to hold up, at least turn his helmet or body for the hit. Instead, he hits AM with the crown of his helmet, and does so on the QB's facemask, slightly underneath it, actually. The defender then wraps up and drives AM into the turf with his entire weight, then lingers over him and screams trash before getting up and trotting off.

I think this is cause for a penalty. Yes I know, the game was not decided on that play...and yes I know, football is not for pussies. Football is a contact sport. Nonetheless, that play was a textbook penalty. Honestly, I would have been happy to see the flag on that play, because it would have proven to me that there is no double standard on Big 10 officiating. I must be honest, though...I am not convinced of that at this point.

PSU was the recipient of a gift call that allowed them to defeat Minnesota during the prior week's game. I know that things even out. Nonetheless, when it comes to UM, I am extremely cynical about the motives of the conference officials, and that feeling was only bolstered Saturday night.

They could have set my mind at ease, and thrown a flag on that play. They should have done so if only to send a message that tackling a QB late with the crown of your helmet won't be tolerated. No excuse, no reason why that play wasn't a penalty.

On the other hand, perhaps such a non-call is supposed to send another message...that PSU needs to get serious about OL development if they expect to play football. The line PSU has been running out is deplorable. PSU has been abysmal with OL development since 1994. When you play as they did Saturday night, you don't belong on the football field at all. For all of the takes and slams against the PSU staff that one might step forward with, the one that stings the most and is most relevant is that they have done a terrible - really, a ROTTEN job with the OL.

Nonetheless, let me reiterate my respect for the UM squad. I think that this year's UM team is the best I've seen in a while. They have looked great so far, and the OSU/UM game will be a gem this year - very likely a 1-2 matchup. UM totally outclassed PSU on the football field, both with players and clipboard-carriers.

PSU can stage a night game like no other school. I really think they have the best atmosphere in CFB right now. That's the one clear positive for PSU fans today...that and the performance of Tony Hunt. It now remains for PSU to prove that they are in the 2nd tier of the Big 10 this season. Three losses to (at the time of snap) three top 5 teams is nothing to visegrip your pantaloons over...but now, the team must gather and produce and continue the momentum of 2005.
