Kelly Clarkson
when i first saw her i hated her
i hate the whole American Idol thing
but you know what? at least those peeps can SING
so i'm watching SNL the other night and Kelly Clarkson is on
she obviously hired a stylist, new blond hair, sorta punk chic look
she looks KICK ASS and the single "Since U Been Gone" is kick ass.
it's a compact 3:09 which means there's no bullshit.
just verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, OUT
great hook and she can fucking belt it out
RACK THAT, VERY BENATARISH
(although i'd bet the rest of the CD blows)

A little more on the track in question
it starts with a little two chord eighth note guitar plunk reminiscent of Liz Phair or some other indie chick
the lyrics are pure cheese but no matter. she sings the first verse in an understated tone
after 8 measures of the first verse another guitar comes in for another 8 measures of verse
the music builds to a crescendo and BAM the chorus throws us a curveball and kicks in after 5 measures
now she's wailing
her voice is STRONG
repeat twice
the bridge is a little weak but works
not a truly GREAT song but very good nonetheless. if a lesser singer were singing it, it'd be pure crap
she does pull some very impressive upper register shit during the final choruses but she doesn't over do it
for an alternative pop song to get teenage girls buying millions of CD's, I give a an A.
It's also strong enough to get many older peeps to buy due to the strength of her voice and the hook\
overall grade: 91% A-

have you listened to the track?Billdong wrote:<cough>manufactured bullshit<cough>
Troll job.
this is no troll job
as a musician and as somebody who has co produced over 50 songs in studios this is the way I interpret music.
for what it is, the song is solid
would i rather crank DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP or LED ZEP II or LONDON CALLING at 11 than listen to this? Hell yeah
BUT, i like a wide variety of music.
my itunes shuffle goes from Maroon 5 to AC/DC to Iron Maiden to Etta James to Milla Jovovich
variety is the spice of life
a little pop mixed in is a good thing
i've always been a sucker for a pop hook and that tune has it aplenty
aplenty

Didn't hear it, but i've heard her sing. shes got mad talent.
slim chance she won't get sucked into the machine like mariah Carey did, though.
listen to "vision of love" from MC back in 1990. She co wrote it, even. She sounds very much like KC when she first broke out.
If KC manages to break away from corporate music hell, cool, but I wouldn't bank on it.
The last song I heard KC sing sounded much like Avril Lavigne.
Honestly, recent musical history repeating itself for the glory of the dollar is pretty much what I'd expect to happen.

Twas not an NFL that she performed at, but rather the SB pregame. She also kicked off the Orange Bowl halftime disaster. Her mic wasn't operating, and considering that Ashlee Lipsync-son was performing last, the non-working mic was probably intended for her. The whole sound system sucked for that halftime performance, so Clarkson didn't do all that hot on the song then.
That said, it really is much better than her first outting. The first single off the album, Break Away, was written by Avril Lavigne I believe (not sure if that was mentioned in this thread...kinda skimmed it only). Since U Been gone really rocks....I dig it. Everything everyone said about it being catchy and pop-ish is right, but it still beats that dying fuckin cat Simpson any day.

...because we all know that looks are more important than talent. :Pdrummer wrote:
